Great lens. I started looking into other focal lengths a while ago because I was used to the 80mm, 110 and 150mm medium format lenses, so I went with 40mm, 75mm and other non conventional lenses such as the famous 50mm/85mm lenses. To me the Viltrox 1.2 and Sigma 40mm 1.4 Art lenses are fantastic options on the market
When you test the 7Artisan lens, can you check the auto focus on burst shot mode. Dustin Abbot did a review about 3 months ago and said burst mode on static subjects was bad and even worse when subject was moving. It would be interesting to see if that issue has been resolved in a firmware update. Also apparently the MF/AF switch is very easy to move even via accidentally brushing it. Look forward to your review.
Great job as always on this review Mark! I think in the Sony eco system this is one of the best deals for a 50mm simply because Sony never updated their 50mm 1.8 . And in my opinion they do this on purpose to upsell the 50mm 2.5 G (awesome lens for the size) 50mm 1.4 GM and 50mm 1.2 GM. For me personally the minimum focus distance is a deal breaker. People have love and hate opinions on Canon, but the RF 50mm 1.8 is just great for the size with minimum focus of 35cm and current price around 200$.
This lense is pretty damn good. I have it on my FX3 and the auto tracking is amazing and it’s not as cheaply built as you would think. Honestly, it’s a helluva lens for $180 and honestly if it was $300 it’s not a bad deal too.
Excellent review Mark, and that lens looks like a fantastic option for the money! These cheap lenses are getting so good it's pretty remarkable to say the least...
Why lens become f1.8 and not f2 nowadays? Is there some technical advantagement that allow them to make same lens but brighter while retain small size or its just the software correction allow for it and no hardware advancement?

Hey Mark , i have a zv e10 and i got the tamron 18 - 300, but not sure if its me than need more practice with that lens, cuz i feel that len is not sharp enough, if so, Im considering to buy another lens , would you recommend to buy sigma 56mm or 75 viltrox, or 18 - 50 sigma or tamron 17 - 70. I want to take sharp photos, portrait, and something that can handle a little bit low light situations. Thanks in advance.
I have the same setup (ZV-E10 + Tamron 18-300). I also have the Sigma 35mm F1.4 and Sony 18-105 F4. I've never directly compared the Sony to the Tamron (though now I'm curious), but I imagine I would see the same as you, the Tamron isn't as sharp. Definitely compared to the Sigma, the Tamron isn't close to the sharpness, but that's not why I bought the Tamron. The Tamron is a "one and done" lens that you can leave on your camera all day, and you will always get the shot. Maybe I want to take nice landscapes as I'm walking, but then be able to get a shot of a bird flying nearby - this is the lens that's perfect for that. If I know I'm going to be taking portraits, I switch to the Sigma because the sharpness is unbelievable. When the focus is really on an eye, it looks incredible, even with this "vlogging" camera. My advice to get the most out of the Tamron is to make sure you're shooting nice and fast shutter, and double check you have the stabilisation turned on. The stabilisation is surprisingly good, even handheld at 300mm.
I like when you compare lenses and talk about all the technical stuff, it would be great to have a guide how to make those different comparisations shots, so i can expiriment with my little dougy with my sigma lens 😅

Glad that it is a good lens and more affordable than its counterparts. But it "being an amazing time" is a stretch , mirrorless got so expensive in comparison to what photographyused to be. Just a few years back you could get a brand new Nikkor AF 50mm f1.8 for a hundred dollars. I had one and it was amazing, weather sealed and freaking robust (it fell from a second floor and received no harm - also luck for sure) and it was the size of the Sony and so light.

APSC lenses cover APSC sensors. Full frame lenses can be used for both full frame and APSC. But usually if you get an APSC lens for your APSC camera, it’s smaller and lighter and gives more bang for buck
I will, in a conceivable future, make a video about Yongnuo YN35 F2. About the fact that it's, probably, the most important lens in a world. One of my points will be about the fact, that 35, not 50, is the most popular focal distance. By the sheer fact, that 35mm is the size of a film, and a Full Frame sensors. Also it's much more universal - you can do portraits, landscapes and even urban shooting with it, even in tight spaces. And! Also - $100 for Canon EF version.
You have a few concepts a bit mixed up - 35mm film is actually close in size to and APS-C sensor. A full frame sensor is bigger. The MM on a lens does not refer to how much of a sensor is covered. The full frame lenses (or aps-c lenses) all over the same amount of the sensor. The 35mm or 50mm refers to distance. Distance is used for focal length because it measures the distance between the plane of the lens and the point at which refracted rays meet at a point. In other words, it can tell you how much of the scene you can see. Using a 35mm lens on a 35mm camera is common however and that is because the 35mm on a aps-c size sensor (or 35mm film) will yield something that looks like a 50mm full frame equivalent (close to what the human eye sees).
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis >35mm film is actually close in size to and APS-C sensor. I'm not talking about the actual size of a picture. The term "35mm" is MUCH more popular, has MUCH more notoriety and is much more wide-spread. 35mm film (the OG from the 1892), or 135 film (Kodak version from 1934) is 24×36 mm. The Full Frame sensor is the 24mm x 36mm. >The MM on a lens does not refer to how much of a sensor is covered. I know. That's not the point. I'm talking about the knowledge of the average Joe, and the Average Joe, asking an advice from a Little Less, But Still Average Moe (a somewhat knowledgable "camera" consultant in B&H for example), has much more chances to hear about 35mm, then the 50mm. If he hears 50 AND 35, then well, bigger = better amirite boys? *high five sound* But again - the spread of 35mm, as a "default size" option for the industry, is non-comparable to 50. I get Your points, they are 100% valid, but You went into different direction. You went technical, I went psycologically. My fault for not specifying it.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Yes, the 7Artisans 50mm AF, it's a great lens, but encountered weirdness with the autofocus not always working properly on my ZV-E10 when shooting photos in various situations.
As a Canadian channel, one would assume when you quote prices, you are quoting in CDN dollars. Nowhere in your video do you specify $166 USD. When you click on your affiliate link it is priced at $280 CDN. Not such a deal. Please specify in future what prices you are quoting USD/CDN? Thanks.
I usually say USD - sometimes I forget - my audience is 90% USA and when people quote internationally they usually use US prices. I will be more clear from now on. But we yours NEVER get something like that for 166 cdn 😀
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Ok, fair enough, I just thought the post picture quoting $166 was a little click baity. It must be a US special sale, because the exchange to CDN is around $235, and Amazon Canada is charging $50 more than that?

I bought two Chinese-made lenses. They are barely 5 months old, and I am having a lot of trouble selling them on eBay at a low price. I never again used Chinese-made lenses.
I’ve noticed that this lens tends to be quite soft. The sharpness in the photos doesn’t seem as good as what you’d get from a basic kit lens or those older, inexpensive 50mm lenses for DSLRs. Considering this, I personally don’t think it’s worth the price, even if it appears cheap at first glance.
Hi Mark I'm no YT expert but surely the title of this video isn't good for analytics? Wouldn't a more specific title yield higher views? Something like 'Best budget camera lens' in it...
This guy is funny and engaging. Should have higher views. Jake Sloan has the same problem….meanwhile Philip Bloom and his cats make bank boring the audience to death.
"If you think you can get a perfect lens for $166 you have been drinking the wrong juice." Sorry, too many people want to correct that, because they think that any juice that is that hallucinogenic is actually the right juice...
It's a great time to be APS-C! Man, someday I'll get one of those FX30s, slap an 18-105 f4 PZ on and have myself a perfect camcorder :D Update: my bad, this one's full frame! Wow, that makes it a great deal!
Haven't checked in a while -- seems channel has gone 100% infomercial. Maybe the money is good? I've been thinking of re-focusing my channel. My channel lacks 'focus'.
If you haven't checked in a while, you're probably just being fed my top viewed videos by the algorithm - like this one. I'm still posting twice or three times a week. The channel is still the same - reviews, cameras, lenses, comparisons, especially with Sony cameras. It's just that there are more cheap lenses that are high quality these days, and so that is a category I cover as well. But it's good to focus. I have stayed since day one on the same theme - reviews and comparisons.

clickbait? if i knew this was a 50mm 1.8 i wouldn't have clicked.. why shouldn't this be possible? it's one of the most popular and cheapest focal lengths to produce. canon were selling their version of 50mm 1.8 for way less than this for years. nikon too. there have been 3rd party 50mm for ef mount at a much lower price too. the sony version isn't really that much more expensive than this.
Hey Mark, I love your content, but in the nicest possible way, I feel you’ve made a recent change to copy Mark Wiemels’ channel. Thumbnails and content topics are virtually identical, and at least for me, I’m interested in learning about all new gear, including midrange and expensive gear, and not just covering 3rd party budget lenses that punch above their price range. Perhaps it’s subconscious or perhaps I’m overthinking things, but when this thumbnail popped up, I immediately thought it was one of his videos. Please don’t start writing in red and black marker on strips of white paper! Now, in a direct competition, your personality will win the day, but I’d hate to start skipping your content they way I generally skip his content once I get the quick gist of what he’s talking about. Have a gear weekend!
I see what you’re saying, but the majority of my stuff is not cheaper lenses. I do cover those because a lot of good ones are popping up. And while this has been my thumbnail style for a while, the titles on these types of videos are more in the Mark Wiemels style when it comes to lower priced lenses. I find people don’t give newer 3rd party lenses a shot when you write the names in the title - they just skip them and I think that’s a shame. So I do like that Mark finds a way to get people to check it out. I try to sprinkle them in among the Sony and Sigma lenses and camera gear. mental note: Don’t write on strips of paper - got it🤣

@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis ok thank you i would watch it sorry
I use the rf 85mm version of this lens with canon and love it
I will, in a conceivable future, make a video about Yongnuo YN35 F2.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
>35mm film is actually close in size to and APS-C sensor.
*high five sound*
But again - the spread of 35mm, as a "default size" option for the industry, is non-comparable to 50.
I get Your points, they are 100% valid, but You went into different direction. You went technical, I went psycologically. My fault for not specifying it.
Nifty 50's used to be $100. Times are a changin'. Excellent review regardless.
yeah, lenses have become crazy expensive which makes it all the more important to find the good values
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis So true!
my boy really posts what i want to know lmao XD
Can't wait to see a comparison with the 7Artisan 50mm f1.8! :)
On the Way!!
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis you really are the master! ❤️😎
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis please extensively test the AF, I've had a bit of focus issues with mine, I haven't been able to find a firmware update yet.
You have the 7artidans, you mean?
We get hit with all kinds of taxes too
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis And that price was before hst 😡
50 f/1.8's have always been cheap and awesome. I had my (very plasticy! yuk!) mark 1 canon 50/f/1.8 for decades, then like 5 years ago maybe, got the improved build quality mk 2 for like $100
Vignette forever 🤝
I think I fell in love with this lens
And she's a cheap date!!
Just when i bought my sigma 30 these cheap good 50s started dropping in.... damn i'm unlucky.
well if you talking apsc this would be way too tight for most shoots due to the crop factor
That sigma is amazing - and better for APS-C. Don't regret that at all - I would recommend the Sigma 30mm ALL DAY for an APS-C camera
Hey Mark, way off subject I know but this is how the public has to communicate with big deal celebrities. I got the new ulanzi fan that spring loaded no auction cups and it’s WAY better. If you haven’t got it yet you should. That’s all until next time. Over and out
Celebrity here - yes - I have it and reviewed it!! th-cam.com/video/ZbYDQMRlOb0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=meOdiD_o9SxKBd6o
I bought two Chinese-made lenses. They are barely 5 months old, and I am having a lot of trouble selling them on eBay at a low price. I never again used Chinese-made lenses.
If you want top dollar on the used market, 1st party lenses are the way to go.
Great Video!
I don't drink the wrong juice, I drink the right juice
🤣
I’ve noticed that this lens tends to be quite soft. The sharpness in the photos doesn’t seem as good as what you’d get from a basic kit lens or those older, inexpensive 50mm lenses for DSLRs. Considering this, I personally don’t think it’s worth the price, even if it appears cheap at first glance.
its $160 bro beggars cant be choosers
Yup, very good for the money, almost absurd that price!
Drinking the wrong juice 🥤😂
Hi Mark I'm no YT expert but surely the title of this video isn't good for analytics? Wouldn't a more specific title yield higher views? Something like 'Best budget camera lens' in it...
TH-cam is funny. This is my 3rd best video for views this year.
This guy is funny and engaging. Should have higher views. Jake Sloan has the same problem….meanwhile Philip Bloom and his cats make bank boring the audience to death.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis You’re awesomely funny and engaging. 🎉
Canon users watching all of the awesome budget third party lenses release:
They’re at least starting now!!
a $166 goodness! Oh man!
Let me guess…. there is an affiliate link. Y E P
I put affiliate links in every video for every product. This is a product review channel.
For that price you can get a Canon RF 50mm 1.8.. doesn't make much sense this lens for Canon users.
The don't sell one for Canon - the Canon lens isn't bad, actually, it's still a bit more at $199 - but a great bargain itself.
"If you think you can get a perfect lens for $166 you have been drinking the wrong juice." Sorry, too many people want to correct that, because they think that any juice that is that hallucinogenic is actually the right juice...
😂
It's a great time to be APS-C! Man, someday I'll get one of those FX30s, slap an 18-105 f4 PZ on and have myself a perfect camcorder :D
Update: my bad, this one's full frame! Wow, that makes it a great deal!
They have a new 55 1.4 for APS-C that I'm reviewing soon!!
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Sounds great, looking forward to that!
Oh, forgot to mention - love your photo samples!
the glossy plastic looks really cheap :
In real life it looks good. - not shiny or glossy - more of a matte
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Besides which, it really is cheap. Can't expect a Mercedes for Kia prices.😆
The Sony lens is so noisy people remarked on it from several feet away.
😂
I have a 52mm f1.1 MF for only $89 at half the size.
Some great MF lens deals out there. I'll talk about those soon
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Will watch more ... I really don't get good recommendations from TH-cam. They don't recommend my stuff to anyone ... Since Covid. I really enjoy your shows that put gear to use in real-life situations. Keep it up, am a loyal follower here. Cheers
yes - TH-cam just shows people what they think they want - not the stuff you're subscribed to - my feed is ridiculous these days
even RF canon has his 50mm 1.8 cheap.
yes, all the camera brands have a nifty 50, unfortunately- those lenses aren’t great optically
Price will increase to ~$300 in a couple weeks
Can you do us fellow Canadians a favor and also tell the price in Canadian when you talk about it? You always get me amped about the low prices then i search and see its double in Canada.
You're a Canuck bud, help your countrymen out! Say "this lens is only $160...and for my fellow Canadians, it's $300" that would be so appreciated!
unfortunately, we don’t always get the same prices. All the countries are different, but the US makes up 90% of my audience. I’ll try to mention the Canadian prices from now on if available 👍
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis well of course we don't get the same prices...we get ripped off up here.
But there's still a good chunk of your fellow Canucks relying on your info..ahem...like me! Just knowing the CAD price will help :)
It’s the super good and dirt cheap
Yeah, but that hood doesn't look any different than the Sony hood they sell for $30. I wouldn't call that cheap. $30 for a thin little piece of like 2 cents worth of plastic.
Fair enough!!
🤙👊 nice
Oh so beautiful. 😂
😂
Innuendo master
i'd buy it for $150
🤣 you’re a hard bargainer
Mark , I think we should change your name to " camera & lenses😊 You are very good at this . The way you explain everything in detail needs to be studied . It's more like you have loved cameras and lenses since birth . 😊💯💯
haha - thanks!!
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis 💯💯💯💯🙏
clickbait? if i knew this was a 50mm 1.8 i wouldn't have clicked.. why shouldn't this be possible? it's one of the most popular and cheapest focal lengths to produce. canon were selling their version of 50mm 1.8 for way less than this for years. nikon too. there have been 3rd party 50mm for ef mount at a much lower price too.
the sony version isn't really that much more expensive than this.
How is it clickbait? the thumbnail says it’s a $166 lens. It is AND it’s a good lens. The Sony lens is $240 and it’s crap.
Sony 50mm 1.8 is cheap price
It is - but still more expensive than this one and a much worse lens
I try to sprinkle them in among the Sony and Sigma lenses and camera gear. mental note: Don’t write on strips of paper - got it🤣
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis I love the reply, and like I said, I love the channel.
