I was a 9/11 responder. The irony here is that I bought this album in a little shop in Greenwich Village post-9/11. First time I'd been to the city since the incident. One of the greatest purchases of my life.
I worked in a music store in the 90’s and every time we would play this we would sell five cds. Why this didn’t resonate is still a mystery. I have burned more copies of this for people than most albums. Thanks for sharing.
My cousin Joseph gifted this to me one Christmas. It was his copy and he knew I liked it. I'm listening now because he recently passed. This album brings me back to those family gatherings in that tiny apartment in Manhattan.
That extremely cool synth sound that starts at 13 seconds and goes well past the 1 minute mark is a completely unmodified Roland patch from both Alpha Juno and MKS-50 synths called Syn Rise! My first synth in the 80's had that patch and I instantly recognized it of course! It's very distinct in that it makes use of a feature present on very few synths. It combines a filter sweep with pulse width modulation. Not so unusual by itself, but the PWM is controlled by a separate LFO! So it can have a different rate than that of the filter sweep, and that is what makes the sound so unique to this line of synths. The sound appears at various places in this album, cleverly tying it all together thematically.
I listened to this album over and over again one night, in the mid-90s, while tripping on peyote with my best friend. It was un fcking believable. He has passed on which makes this album that much more for me.
30 years ago. I remember going to HMV and looking for cassettes. I would go to the import area alot. I remember seeing this and thinking lets give it a go. Bought it and probably a couple other tapes. I popped it in my walkman and waited for the bus. I had never heard anything like this before. I rode the bus home from the mall listening to this tape. Both sides. I felt like I was in another dimension. I thought I had found something no one else knew about. To this day Ive met only a few people who are aware of Moodswings. I feel its still my little secret. In mid life now. Not sure how Ive made it this far in life. But if you were to make a movie of my life, I know the soundtrack would be awesome. Peace.

BTW Grant Showbiz does the sound board for Billy Bragg when he is on tour. I dont know how BB tour is doing during this current epidemic. I got to chat with him a bit when he came to Portland a few years ago. Even got him to autograph my Live at Leeds :) I definitely recommend BB show and if you get a chance spend a few min with Grant. He said that James was such a perfectionist he pretty much had to push the album out for him. "Other wise he would still be working on it" half jokingly. They did a live album in ‘94, but I don’t think there was a 2. James FT Hood is the main guy. But I’m wrong all the time.

Is1959 -- here's a suggestion: go on Amazon, buy two copies of the CD and gift them to two people who talk about things they love. Word of mouth, etc.
