The Art of Trusting One's Self - The Philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson

  • Emerson's combination of eastern and western philosophies provided a uniquely eclectic perspective for his time. Today, his ideas may seem to permeate the common place, which is only a testament to the influence his work had on the world at large. Agree with his ideas or not, his work is beautifully written and an appealing guiding light though self examination.

    This came at the perfect time. After 28 years, I am finally beginning to learn to trust myself and it is taking me places and giving me good things. It feels so weird but feels so good. I've entered a new job, a new industry, I'm single, after nearly three years, and I am so happy to go on my OWN and enjoy my own presence. I also notice instead of doubting myself as default, I actively acknowledge negative thoughts and their presence but choose to remind myself that I CAN do that something. It feels weird, but it is refreshing.
    What a beautiful amalgamation of life, humanity, and religion.

    This is one of the few channels I can watch now. I recently abandoned the whole self-improvement thing, as I realized it was causing more damage than good. This channel and a few others are an exception, and I can't explain in words why. It feels way more healthy and productive, helping us reach our truest selves, rather than improving for external factors like getting women or gaining a higher frame other others.

    • @harshtripathi765

    • @clementguichet5726
      @clementguichet5726 4 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      I agree, i myself abandoned that self-improvement thing. Most channels regarded as self-development/improvement constantly talk about how to get more confident, more productive, how to stand out etc...I believe this channel has more to offer in the sense that it provides us with true knowledge, philosophies, unfiltered and not trying to please anyone but rather sheer ideas to ponder in order to get to your own conclusions

    • @Ruylopez778
      @Ruylopez778 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Some channels focused on philosophy/mindfulness that you might like:
      Einzelganger - discusses philosophy and psychology
      Academy of Ideas - as above but with more quotes, but still accessible
      Russell Brand - discusses the 12 step programme, relationships, community etc
      I feel these follow in a similar vein to this channel, in that they don't force you to do anything, just present ideas for you to think about. I would say they actually reinforced each other in a sense.

    This is kind of amazing to me... Over the course of my life I have had very similar ideas to the ones expressed in this video, but I always felt as if they were 'too crazy' or somehow just unproductive and so I pushed them away. Only lately have I realized just how ingrained it is in us in most modern societies to forget about what's *really* important in life (and most importantly to ourselves), so I started writing my ideas down. Trusting they were good, and even if they were wrong I was putting forth a perspective that I _accepted_ could be wrong-it was freeing. To see this, after just recently finally starting to truly trust myself, really means the world.

    If you have time give a read, I also had written a similar essay once -"We have a natural obligation to the cosmos to express our own human experience and subjective reality of this world from our inner eye. The world exists for us and from us. Our consciousness is the way by which the universe experiences itself. Every human, shaped and moulded by the infinitely many elements of this cosmos, has something unique to present back to the cosmos, which is, the intangible multi-faceted human experience which can't be described by mere objective facts. It can only be described in the invisible interaction of the words, human emotions, sounds, colours, their texture, structure and flow in every person's artistic self-expression. The selection of words, the arrangement of words, the visualisation created by them, the storytelling, all are unique to the author and subconsciously places us in the author's mind for the moment. The composition of colours, the technique, the aesthetics, the way the lines, shapes and surroundings meet represents a subliminal message from the artist, both consciously and subconsciously. This subtle aspect of personal touch can never be taken away from the creator even when his work can be replicated or reproduced in other aspects. Every story ever written, represents something about the writer themselves. Every art ever created is a peek into the creator's soul. In a general sense, everyday, the world we surround ourselves with, is a reflection of the values and self-expression of all the beings who have interacted with it. No matter how much we avoid, inevitably we ingrain our inimitable beliefs, values and ourselves into the work that we do everyday. So it's important that we turn this interaction into voluntary means to project ourselves.Thus, everyone capable should find their suitable form of self-expression to document their own original viewpoint of this world. In this plethora of human creativity, everyone might not connect to our art but it is our duty towards the some that do."

    This really speaks to me. Life was so beautiful to me when I was younger. I was carefree and I was brilliant. I knew I didn't really understand the world but I didn't care, I leaned into it. But as I became a teenager I had to cope with a lot of trauma and mental illness and I threw myself into religion. I started to care a lot and messing up was never an option. I've become so consumed with perfection and understanding everything in its entirety that I spend all my time hidden away in my room. The world isn't beautiful anymore, it's terrifying. Everything that I used to do so easily is so hard now. Everything that I used to love is so meaningless. It's like I've had who I am taken away from me. I don't even know how to be that person anymore, so how can I rely on them? I think I just need to convince myself that its ok to be that person again, that its ok not to care, that its ok to live for my own enjoyment. Once I manage to do that I think the mask I can't remove will melt away. I think this video helped. Thanks.

    This video resonated with me so much. Too many changes because of the pandemic. I am an artist and its part of the job to be self reliant and to push on working. But it's really been hard to do creative things when the world is close to burning entirely and literally in 2020. The message in this video is a great reminder for me. Sometimes we really need to hear that our lives and experiences matter... That we can survive...

    Harold Bloom praises Emerson and elaborates on the concept of self-reliance in his Omens of The Millenium. By his description in the video, one can easily grasp why Nietzsche was so fond of Emerson.

    I don’t know who you are Pursuit of Wonder, but I just want to take This Moment to express my eternal gratitude towards you; even if you never see this message. I’ve been listening to your videos for almost a year now and I just want to let you know how much your outlook, altruistic philosophy, and calming voice has provided me with a little bit of hope every day.
    I know you’re a stranger, and I am a stranger, but even though we’ve likely never met your virtual humanism and unknowing affinity has changed my life. I just want to tell you not to give up making these intellectual mind-bits because you are an amazing individual!
    I have clinical major depressive disorder but yet every time I watch these videos I seem to gather a whole new perspective on life and am challenged differently through your thought provoking commentary. Thank you very much for doing what you do :)
