My sweet granny Vilena, lived to be 103 n was a herbalist, in the woods of Arkansas. She had a wealth of knowledge using wild plants for medicial values. She learned some things from local Indians that lived close to her

Quick tip from an experienced gardener: Figs are giant beasts if planted into unrestricted ground. Here in the UK it's recommended to plant them into a buried 'box' made from paving slabs or similar, or large pots, for root restriction. We can grow the brown fig outside here. But not most other varieties. I've seen a couple that scaled an entire 2 storey house, obviously after a lot of years.
You have a very mild climate compared to a lot of the US, though.
@@cynthiafisher9907 True. I am not familiar with all the different American types of climate, it varies so much over the continent.
@@cynthiafisher9907 I'm also in NC (just east of Bri) and our fig tree is about the size of a medium sized garage. We have a couple different varieties (not sure of the names). Maybe Bri knows of a "mini" type fig tree or just starting one out in a green house as it does take a few years before they grow HUGE.
@@mapleviewfarm1 di does have a small dig tree at the farm, but it doesn’t always fruit because of the cold winters. I’m sure there are a lot of different microclimates in NC.

Love the video! I created a bird sanctuary where I can sit on my rocking chair and enjoy the birds frolicking. The floor of the bird sanctuaryis chocolate mint! The aroma is amazing! I've got speermint on the opposite side of the yard. Working on eggplant beds and sugar baby watermelons

We’re Portland, Or. zone 8b, winters with lows in the 20s. I have hearty figs that stay outdoors year round. It helps to have them near a sun facing wall. Occasionally the tips freeze if we have an exceptionally cold winter but I just cut those off come spring. There’s some newer dwarf figs that would do well in your greenhouse. Blessings.

Back in the day, we had a huge, blue granite ware turkey roaster and we often used the lid to that to cover things in the oven. Its not near as tight as a foil tenting but it worked withiut using foil. Also, all/ manynofmthe old school Pyrex casserole dishes came with lids.
I follow Mike and his family the fit farmer. They are a beautiful family with big hearts.

Bree you can learn to use tools. At age 75 I did my first build ever, a beautiful chicken house and run. I have build 4 altogether. This year at 80 I enlarged my chicken run. I did hire someone to install 3 large polls. Using the existing 6ft high fence on 2 sides I enlarged it 10 X 25. I installed two electric automatic doors, converted a metal run into a chicken tractor and installed a door inside of the large door so I can transfer the girls from the run into the tractor. Where there is a will there is a way. I believe we sell ourself to short. Go for it girl, you have more strength than you know.

I kept my Meyor lemon tree in my unheated garage over winter. It gets about 20 degrees at the coldest here. My tree has bloomed and grown the last 2 years with no problems.
Good luck with your figs! I have 9 different varieties planted in large pots along my driveway. North Florida but there are figs that survive fine further north. I just bought a Chicago Hardy plant and can't wait to taste. The first figs are the sweetest and each year they come back better and better. They drop leaves but come back strong. In fact, I had a plant with only one tall branch that got knocked off. I stuck it in the pot with the broken stem and they both grew great! Growing in a large pot keeps the plants smaller. Mine are over 4 years old and still smaller and productive. There are several YT channels that feature figs growing in NC which are so informative. Citrus takes frost and my Meyer lemon has survived several years very well - in a large pot. I do cover with bubble wrap and a blanket on the freezing nights but having a greenhouse will be wonderful for you. Deer eat my Meyer lemon so I had to put up a solar electric fence around my TEENY TINY garden and put the citrus inside it. But it works. I planted one Native Florida sunflower bush last year and it was amazing. Even though regular sunflowers are eaten as soon as leaves appear, deer never touched this variety and it produced a billion new plants so I now have a hedge.
