  • Lewy body dementias (LBD), 1.4 million in the United States.
    www.lbda.org/1...
    Presence of Lewy bodies
    Typically progresses rapidly
    Lewy Body Dementia Association
We understand that though many families are affected by this disease, few individuals and medical professionals are aware of the symptoms, diagnostic criteria, or even that LBD exists.
Lewy body dementias (LBD) are the second most common form of degenerative dementia.
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is most common.
LBD can have three common presentations
Some start with a movement disorder leading to the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease and later develop dementia.
This is diagnosed as Parkinson’s disease dementia.
Others start with a cognitive/memory disorder that may be mistaken for AD,
leading to the diagnosis of ‘dementia with Lewy bodies’ (DLB).
A small group will first present with neuropsychiatric symptoms, hallucinations, behavioral problems, difficulty with complex mental activities
The most common symptoms of LBD include:
Impaired thinking, such as loss of executive function (planning, processing information), memory, or the ability to understand visual information
Fluctuations in cognition, attention, or alertness
Problems with movement, including tremors, stiffness, slowness, and difficulty walking
Visual hallucinations (seeing things that are not present)
The symptoms of LBD are treatable
Early and accurate diagnosis of LBD is essential
Early and accurate diagnosis is important because LBD patients may react to certain medications differently than AD or PD patients.
A variety of drugs, including some dementia meds and some antiparkinsonian medications, can worsen LBD symptoms.
(LBD affects an individual’s brain differently than other dementias).
Treatment should always be monitored by a physician and may include prescriptive and other therapies, exercise, diet, sleep habits, changes in behavior, and daily routines.
Individuals and families living with LBD should not have to face this disease alone.
LBD affects every aspect of a person - their mood, the way they think, and the way they move.
The combination of cognitive, motor and behavioral symptoms creates a highly challenging set of demands for continuing care.
    Physician education is urgently needed.
    More research is urgently needed.
Research needs include tools for early diagnoses, such as screening questionnaires, biomarkers, neuroimaging techniques, and more effective therapies.
Currently, there is no specific test to diagnose LBD.

Now on the topic, imagine if that bus driver had been displaying symptoms for 4 years and his coworkers and management had been covering for him the entire time while knowing he was on medication that altered his abilities behind the wheel...but the passengers who had been screaming about it the entire time were insulted and ignored despite following the evidence where it led. A truly scary thought...

My daddy had this in the last stage of Parkinson’s. It was more than heartbreaking it was devastating. My daddy was a good man; a man of faith. At first he would see numbers “crawling” on the wall. He would freeze and get that blank look. Towards the end he would hallucinate demons. He would be so afraid, but his thoughts were about protecting us. And no matter how terrified he was he could always form a coherent prayer. It killed me to see him go through that. He was a faithful servant that was called home.

I am a mental health therapist but have worked with dementia patients who have mental illness. I was very unhappy that we have been asked to ignore characteristics of some form of cognitive and physical decline. We are asked to ignore what we know is a problem. I was very sad for what occurred at the US debate when everyone knew it would have some consequence. There are Federal laws in the US that determine course of action with this type of disease. It is medical but also safety and legal liability. If there are no changes in direction for the candidates it puts unnecessary focus on symptoms and everyone will be looking for them and doing their own assessment of them. Any symptom of illness then becomes part of the political game. That is a terrible thing. Thank you for the information.

As much as I don’t like Joe Biden that was just sad last night. We with the ability to have watched him over the last 4 years. He is rapidly declining now and I can’t believe they had the nerve to put him on that stage last night. Shame on his wife for then taking him off stage, took him to another one and praised him like he was some little child saying you did so good you answered every question right. He just stood there and smiled, probably wondering when he could have an ice cream cone for being such a good boy.
Dr. Campbell to me this is eider abuse. Biden just liked so hollow. Just a shell on stage.
I have to say I felt bad for the guy. He should be in a home on a memory floor and given the love and support he really needs.
Shame on the democrats too putting him as their front guy even in 2020 but especially now in 2024.
I think congress should invoke a section of the constitution and have him removed as president now. Now of course Kamala Harris will take over and she doesn’t have both oars in the water but anything is an upgrade from Joe Biden.
Biden is the leader of the free world???? No wonder this world is in such a mess. Taking advantage of a situation knowing just how weak America looks and is right now.

It has been a slow progression luckily, but some operations recently have accelerated his condition. A once vibrant full of pep man is now diminished to watching tv and constant napping. It was difficult here in Australia to get information on this so joined the PCA facebook group which has been of a great help.

Thank you for this talk, Dr. Campbell. It is long past time for the public to become aware of the second most common form of dementia, LBD. I lost my husband to this disease last year and during his illness I did a deep dive on studying LBD. Towards the end it can progress rather swiftly. I have been sadly aware of our leader,s physical decline and how obvious symptoms seem to track to an LBD diagnosis. I am praying for our leader, his family, and our country.

My mother passed away in Oct 2022 and I took care of her for quite a while and was with her daily after moving her back to my home town, and I know this is what she had, but no one would listen to me. I did much research when I began noticing her symptoms, and her symptoms matched exactly those of Lewy Body Dementia. I worked in an opthalmologist's office with many elderly patients and saw many different conditions, including Dementia, Parkinsons, Disease, Huntington's Disease, and many other conditions along with the eye diseases, and I could absolutely tell the difference in the dementia in my Mother's condition. One time when my mother was in a hospital in another city, she was seen by a psychiatrist and their office called me at work and spoke to me at length, and said that she was mentally ill after listening to her, but no one would listen to me. I had been with her daily and saw her symptoms and they were *Exactly* as you described. There needs to be much more awareness brought to this specific type of Dementia. Thank you Dr Campbell for this informative video. ❤

Lewy Body Dementia (LBD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder that involves both cognitive and motor symptoms, often overlapping with Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. One of the central pathological features of LBD is the presence of Lewy bodies, which are abnormal aggregates of protein that develop inside nerve cells, disrupting normal function and leading to cell death.
At the heart of LBD's pathology is a rogue protein known as alpha-synuclein. Under normal circumstances, alpha-synuclein is involved in the regulation of neurotransmitter release, a critical function for communication between neurons. However, in LBD, this protein misfolds and clumps together, forming Lewy bodies. These aggregates are toxic to neurons and contribute to the hallmark symptoms of LBD, including cognitive decline, motor dysfunction, and behavioral changes.
The exact mechanisms leading to the misfolding of alpha-synuclein are not fully understood. It is believed that a combination of genetic and environmental factors might contribute to this process. Once misfolded, alpha-synuclein can act like a prion, inducing other normal alpha-synuclein proteins to misfold and aggregate. This prion-like behavior is a critical aspect of how the disease spreads within the brain.
In addition to alpha-synuclein, other rogue proteins like beta-amyloid and tau are also involved in the pathology of LBD, especially in cases with overlapping Alzheimer’s pathology. Beta-amyloid plaques and tau tangles, typically associated with Alzheimer's, can further complicate the disease, leading to a more severe cognitive decline.
Understanding the role of these rogue proteins in LBD is crucial for developing targeted therapies. Current treatments focus on managing symptoms rather than addressing the underlying causes. However, research into alpha-synuclein and other proteins offers hope for the future development of disease-modifying treatments that can halt or slow the progression of LBD.
In summary, Lewy Body Dementia is a devastating condition with rogue proteins like alpha-synuclein at its core, disrupting neuronal function and leading to the characteristic symptoms of the disease. Ongoing research aims to unravel the complexities of these proteins and develop effective treatments to improve the quality of life for those affected by LBD.

The problem is mental capacity, not necessarily age. I understand the argument for age limits, but I think that it is undemocratic to deny voters the choice of a, say, 90-year-old who is perfectly lucid and very fit (I would still vote for almost 89-year-old Ron Paul). Age and term limits would not have prevented John Fetterman either. A simple, mandatory cognitive test solves BOTH problems of age and cognitive ability.

Same here, RN for over 20 years. I thought he was demented enough in the run up to 2020 that they'd put someone else on the ballot. I was really surprised by what happened all the way around. Now, 4 years later, when he's at the terminal end of it, everyone is catching on. If it took that debate for folks to catch on. The common person in this country really mostly cares about what is in their own lap at any given moment, that's it. People voted Joe because they wanted things to be 'normal' in a boring sort of way, but what they got was the opposite. I'd even say all the riots before the last election (even during COVID) were meant to feed the chaos so as to make Joe the candidate of 'peace and normalcy'.

As a former carer I visited a lady with lewy bodies. And yes you could see the tell tale signs. The lady was bed ridden. Her hands were always shaking. Her cognitive function was good but all of a sudden she would point to the wall and see people who were not there which were obviously hallucinations. The standout for me was that she was perfectly normal with communication apart from the problems I have pointed out.

My mom was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia in 2017. It’s so heartbreaking to watch her decline. She also has Incontenance issues. I took care of her the first 3 years in my own home and just couldn’t do it any longer. I was exhausted. Constantly washing linens, etc. It was also affecting my marriage. I spent a lot of my time taking care of my mom and was neglecting my spouse. She would get angry with me about meals and at times hit or grab me. I finally moved her into private home care which is very expensive. I felt moving her she would get the care she needs. Praise God she lives close by me. Fortunately, me and my 3 brothers cover what she can’t monthly. I just wish they came to visit her or call her more often. Sometimes I feel all alone in it. Faith in God gets me through it. Praise be to His name 🙏🏼🙏🏼
