Yes we have to remember he’s not the main owner or the sick person that came up with the whole idea. He’s a moderator who has to make very big decisions otherwise his superiors will find a replacement. I’m sure if he didn’t shoot his brother, both of them would be ‘removed’ by the host’s bidding.
He IS the biggest villain. He was trying to steal 001’s empire by orchestrating the midnight fight which would eliminate the weaklings, 001 being one of the weakest in the fight. Watch 001 before the fight and after the fight, the director showed two scenes where 001 is completely behaving the opposite way. During the fight, the front man was searching on the thermal camera for a target, which is 001, but he couldn’t find him until 001 ordered him to stop the fight. 001 was dozing off before the fight, afterwards he stayed up all night when everyone else fell asleep, he forgot his name, he got a fever, he peed his pants… everything is showing he’s now scared and really playing the games rather than before he was just having fun fooling around. There’s also one tiny little detail is when the midnight fight was stopped and the police man was in the front man’s room, there’s a phone call, the front man picking it up saying there’s a little incident but the games will continue and as soon as he hanged up the phone, he sighed, it was a disappointing sigh, meaning his plan of getting rid of 001 wasn’t successful.
An absolutely amazing character. Standing on the evil side, yet surprisingly lonely - while with almost no emotions, somewhere deep in his mind he could still feel for his brother. He's certainly not a kind soul, but on the other hand I love the way he strictly followed a set of rules and orders surrounding his and his game's core values - His brother shot his shoulder, so he shot his shoulder back, instead of straight into the heart. He won the game, yet just like the protagonist, he didn't spend any of his prize money at all. Every detail I could see from this character is a beautiful complexity.

The front man has several layers to his character, he’s always behind a mask whenever we saw him (with the exception of after Jun-ho confronted him) so we never got to see how he reacted. In Red light Green light, he was shown to have a drink and watch the game, but that could be just to see if it was okay for the VIPs. When he shoots people, his hand is always trembling but he shoots rule breakers without hesitation because to him, it reminds him of how unfair life was out in the real world and in squid game, everyone should have an equal chance. He can’t just leave, and go to the police and report squid game because he was both an Ex-cop and he would have to mention his ties to the games in the first place. He knows the Korean Police wouldn’t do anything immediately, and thats why he can’t report the games. He can’t stop them, but he could definitely make sure its all fair.
I disagree with all the comments completely justifying him. I do believe part of him is good, in fact he did cry and feel horrible for killing his brother, which ia good. However, let's not forget he put on jazz music during game 1, and got himself a drink. Imo, he was definitely enjoying it. He is already a broken, traumatized person who has become a hostage of the system. He doesn't look like he likes it or not. He shows sympathy by telling the winner to think of the games as not the worst dream, understanding how a person feels after such games. He suggests that the main character get on a plane and not do anything stupid, knowing what the organizers are capable of in order to achieve their goals. He tried to talk to his brother, giving him indulgences and the opportunity to escape from the island (specifically aiming at the shoulder and not at the head, for example). It is clear that his hand is shaking at the moment of the shot. He doesn't kill for nothing, but only for breaking the rules. And he may be a good person who got here not from a good life and became a hostage of the games (whose background and motivation will be revealed in the new season).

I don't know what it is about the Front Man that's left an impression on me. Perhaps it's the polygonal mask that looks alive as the light reflects off the surfaces, making it look like an old style video game model except this is live action. Either way, I haven't seen a villain this iconic looking since maybe Locutus from Star Trek or Darth Vader from Star Wars.
