  • Hey folks,
in 1982, Intel developed its first embedded processor which was used in early PCs: the 80186. The 80186 has 56k transistors and was produced as a 2µm High-Performance-Channel Metal Oxide Semiconductor (HMOS) with a 16-bit address bus. The CPU follows Intel´s 8086 processor but has various added (embedded) functions on the same die such as clock, DMA controlling, system controlling, etc., and has 8 added instructions vs. the predecessor.
In this video, I would like to pay tribute to this CPU milestone by decapping a CLCC (Ceramic Leadless Chip Carrier) version of AMD from 1986. I will use my metallurgical microscope to show the bare silicon die - 100% vintage technology!
