@@emanueldelgado540 To my understanding… they are self-fruitful. You will just get much heavier fruit set with another variety near by. They are a stone fruit. Most peaches, plums, nectarines, apricots, cherries, and almonds are the same way. Edit: I just surfed around to many websites. Some say they do need another and some say they don’t. Lol
😀Enjoyed the video & I felt as if I were the one picking the cherries. This really gives me a feel for what the plant is like hands on, lots of info which will be helpful because I just got two bare root plants in the mail yesterday. I can't wait to taste these 1st time!
Thanks for the well-done video Ben. Your info on the long term growth characteristics are good points to keep them producing. Most people would probably prune off all the low growing twigs to make the remaining branches healthier. But not good to do on this species.
I've got 2 - 2 year old bushes growing so I'm reporting mine into 10 gallon grow bags because Im moving to a new house sometime this year and I'll put all my fruit bushes and small trees into the ground then🤗💐😊. I can see what I've got to look forward to, thanks for sharing🙂

@Ben Falk What did you mean at 3:30 by "promote the thicket forming by spading at the base"? I'm in zone 5 and planting 3 nanking cherries between our front yard and the neighbors, spaced 3-4 feet apart. How do I form a ticket or encourage a hedge? I've never spaded at the base so I'm curious how that works.
We keep having a lot of flowers but then no fruit...we get late frosts, way into May, is that a reason, or they r missing some nutrients, or need pruning?
Do the seeds come out easily? My front teeth don't touch, and eating sandwiches with tomato slices is impossible. So, I'm a bit concerned about the seeds. Another cherry that grows well in my climate has seeds that pop right out once the cherry is bitten into. I don't have to struggle to chew the flesh off of them with my molars.
the seeds are quite small and when the berry is squishy/ripe its easy to bite into. hooefully that help. I accidently swallowed one with ease(a seed). they are quite small
I planted some carmine jewel, I hope they are as good a bush cherry. I planted cherry trees this spring and they are getting hammered by Japanese beetle.
I love my carmine jewel and after a year or two it becomes a heavy producer (I think mine is 6 years old). To protect from fruit flies and the japanese beatle I cover it in a fine mesh fabric for the last month of ripening. Happy gardening! ^_^
Ben Falk Thank you! That’s so weird because everywhere I look, it says they require a cross-pollinating friend of a different kind fir pollination! I have five Nankings and no other kind yet. I just ordered a Romeo bush cherry today. My Nankings just started to flower! This is the first year as they’re young! I’m so excited. Thanks for your quick response. 😁🙏🏼❤️
I live in Central FL, which is zone 9. It is humid, gets a LOT of rain in the summer, and winters have 2 weeks to 1 month of temperatures below 45 degrees. Do you think this would grow here and fruit?
maybe try making them into a "shrub"... if you've never heard of it it's like a concentrated drink mix made with vinegar. cherry currant anything sounds amazing though.

I got one from Tractor supply a few days ago too.
Same but you need 2 for fruiting :/ preferably not from the same supplier since they could be clones hence not pollinate each other

85% of my “guaranteed to grow” tractor supply plants (over 30) did no grow, and i’m relatively successful with everything else (95%+).

Ben have you looked into Evans cherries? They grow up in zone 3 and are sweet for a technically sour cherry.

Just promote suckering, prune hard, let them run a bit..

Does Nanking need a pollinator? I’ve read repeatedly that they require cross pollination. 🤔
No they do not. We had one and only one bear massively for a few years.

It’s my third year, last years tons of cherries , same this year. Hard to find recipes. Yes you must have 2 bushes.

I heard someone was growing them in new port richey and got fruit. I have one I will be planting but I think you need two to get fruit

In the Midwest (Iowa) they are completely unreliable, I think due to how early they bloom. The years that they do fruit are great though.
