Marco Antonio Regil He doesn't. He read his TH-cam analytics and figured that he stands to lose a chunk of followers with his anti nikon rants. So now he softly adds in negative stuff like "not so cheap feeling, cheap feeling lens hood". And "why nikon first launched 1.8 lenses first". As if the market buys more 1.2s vs 1.8s.

kelsier rayner exactly! Since when did eye af become THE thing in camera (and not image quality or dynamic range or built quality/ long term durability and reliability)??? Since Sony started marketing eye af and put money in the hands of Influencers after they failed with their crappy phones all over the world! And the Influencers will keep telling you "they haven't paid me"! Haha the online marketing game begins with "Influencer plan". That's the first section of the teams presentation.

The cool thing about the new Z mount and Z lenses is that you don't really need to step down a 1.8 lens to 2.8 to get a sharp image. 1.8 is already pretty sharp. Most lenses at 1.2 and 1.4 you have to step down to get the sharpness you need. 85 1.8 Z is already sharp at its max aperture. The price is also pretty good. I am getting one.

@@sottosopra4769 The D G F lenses are all softer at 1.8 than the Z lens at 1.8, in fact, you need to go up to about 2.8 before the same sharpness in the corners can be matched. Second;y there is literally ZERO Chromatic aberration, the D G F lenses have a massive amount of fringing wide open. Lastly the Z lens of the new nikons have 5 axis of stabilization, the other lenses only have 3 axis of stabilization. The price point is great, the older D lens has no motor, so its manual. This is the best 85mm I ever used, better than the F mount 85mm 1.4, it is near flawless and priced competitively. These 1.8 Z primes are amazing, and with limited focus breathing. The dual motor is fast, and as a bonus it is a blast on the z50. Attention, Sony Northrup, sorry to inform you full frame lenses work perfectly on crop bodies. So far I have the 14-30 4 24-70 2.8 50 1.8 and 85 1.8 and all of those are the best in their class. These are perfect for hybrid cameras, and now that Nikon has RAW video they are leading in video. I am sick and tired of all of this gear obsession and am finding it all rather dull, why do you feel you have to justify what you’re using? I’ve always said I don’t care what gear anyone uses because it’s what you can do with it that really matters (nudge nudge wink 😉) Personally, I think it’s not badly priced considering the age of the old Nikon glass and if you compare it to let’s say a Sony FE 85mm it’s not much more but still considerably cheaper than 1.4. I think that Nikon will produce 1.2Z glass rather than 1.4

Fro and other sites are probably not “obsessed” with gear; rather, they are competing for clicks and viewers. Attracting and entertaining gearheads seems easier than getting traditional photographers. I’ve begin to suspect that a many are more interested in camera and lens specs than photography. Personally, I think this hullabaloo about the f1.8 not being f1.x is silliness, more about specs than photography, but I’m aware others disagree.

  • @HR-wd6cw
    @HR-wd6cw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think the reason Nikon chose to do 1.8 versions first, is they are what the average (enthusiast) will use and they aren't absurdly expensive in most cases (although the 50 1.8 S is a bit higher-priced than I'd like--I feel sometimes it's more like a $399 lens but considering a 50 1.8G is still around $200, maybe $599 isn't too far off--just 2x the price but the optics are better comparatively). That being said, I think many pros will just adapt their 1.4's to their Z cameras (or just wait to upgrade to Z when Nikon does start releasing fast 1.4's). Nikon is just trying to catch up to everyone else (mainly Sony) in the prime lens dept, and since they had to basically re-design all the Z lenses, this takes time, so they wanted to create the lens that they knew most people would buy. To me, as an enthusiast, who doesn't really get a return on investment, the 1.8's offer great value/quality at a price point I can manage. To me, the little extra bokeh or gains you get from going to a 1.4 isn't justifiable financially (for my needs).
This being said, my Z 85 1.8 has become my new favorite portrait lens, and sadly, I've been using it way more than my adapted Tamron 70-200 2.8 G2 lens (which I'm thinking about selling now because I've been shooting strictly with the 85 for the past few months now and love the results, not to mention the size and weight). (One big issue for me with the 70-200 is shooting verticals because Nikon didn't have enough foresight into creating a proper grip w/ controls for the Z6/Z7 bodies... which is a huge fail on their part). My hope is the "rumored" z6s/z7s have this option when released (as I would greatly upgrade my Z6 to a new Z6 body if it supported a vertical grip with controls). But shooting with the 85, this isn't as much of a concern because it's so small and light. I just find it difficult to use proper technique when shooting vertically with my 70-200 on the Z without a vertical grip. Can be done, but not as pleasant because of the size and weight of a 70-200 lens.

My 135mm app sonnar, which is very close to the otis line have always been in my bag paired with my D850 and it gives amazing results. I have bought a Z 7ii and my first z lens is this 85/ 1.8. nik hitterp it’s a missed opportunity for Nikon. The Z-mount enables lenses with wider aperture but they wasted time and money a 1.8while they could have made a 1.2 or 1.0 instead to give a lot more incentive for people to get a Z-series camera.
Even if the 1.8 is better than the previous 1.8 from Nikon the obvious difference is not there to make people switch to the new mount. Even a lot of Z-mount users are using adapted lenses because of this.

The whole section at 3:55 about not wanting to use the FTZ adapter....this is my problem with the reviews. I have zero problems with the FTZ adapter, it feels just like shooting native lenses to me. And they allow us to use the old lenses with giant pieces of glass, versus the weird new software-corrected tiny mirrorless lenses which work really well, but lack some of the character of the giant glass lenses of yesteryear. Just my 2 cents, it feels like the FTZ lens discussion is really excessive.

Also, why is anyone that excited about a 1.4 lens? These magical mirrorless big flanges were supposed to make f1.0 possible in an AUTOFOCUS lens. If it's not 1.0, I honestly am not that impressed. F 1.4 is the same shit we've had for like 70 years (I mean, I'm not that old but...70 years!) and we still can't move past that.

The point has nothing to do with the lenses not working fine. I love the adapter, it works. But when you're switching quickly between Z lenses and F lenses with the adapter you run into issues. Sometimes you take the whole adapter off when you meant to just take off the lens. Or you the lens off and want to but a z lens on and now you have to still take the adapter off.
For what I shoot, I can't have it be that slow when im switching.

@@froknowsphoto That is definitely a fiddly and annoying situation, but two bodies and two lenses pretty much covers most stuff for most photographers. Any time you're taking lenses off cameras mid-shoot it totally sucks the fun out of the day. I hope my comment wasn't too negative, I really enjoy your videos and insights. And with so much out there, it's impossible for everyone to love every opinion all the time. Your avoidance of push back from nikon fanatics has been pretty impressive tbh. I think you have a future career in politics... ;)

I think it makes sense launching the 1.8 lenses first, because when the 1.4 and 1.2 ones come out, there will be people who will be like "this piece of glass is so nice, I'm gonna buy it".

I think it depends on the objective when selling.
Is the objective to sell the 1.8 lenses and then sell the 1.4 lenses, then the 1.2 lenses and then the 1.0 to the same customers? Then yes it makes sense.
But if your objective is to overwhelm the competition and outperform the F-mount with absolutely superior lenses, then it does not make sense.
Outperforming the F-mount lenses by a big margin would make the Z-mount a lot more appealing for the current Nikon user base but also for customers from other vendors.
Nikon going for the first option is understandable but I would have preferred the second option.
Also I would like to see some Z-Mount tele-zoom lenses, currently there is only the one DX 50-250.
The upcoming 70-200mm f/2.8 could be interesting.
