    Glad you enjoyed the video. The filter stuff is Baader AstroSolar Safety Film and is specifically for solar observing. I got it through amazon uk from Telescope House. Now is a good time to get some, as there is good activity at the moment with plenty of sunspots. All the best, Andy

    This comment only came up this a.m.
    Thanks for this additional information, I'll have a play around to see what I can obtain. Just my luck that the weather has turned cloudier today! I suppose I'll have to do something non-astronomical.
    Cheers,
    Andy.

    Because of my different telescope I used plant pot trays with the filter inside them. Cut out the two bases and super glued them together. Finally got a day with no clouds and veiwed the sun today with it's many sunspots. Wouldn't have tried it without watching this vid so many thanks.
    P.S I used alot of cellotape to make sure it was secure and had a great afternoon.

    .....Initially I found the sun in the telescope by looking at the shadow cast by it on the ground. Once centred in the telescope eyepiece, I adjusted the pinhole projector's image to be in the centre of the translucent screen. I've seen them for sale at a cost around $90 ! I also like it because you take your conventional spotter scope out to mount it thus avoiding potential burns to the head! Wishing you clear skies for the transit! Thanks! It's a fine-toothed hacksaw on thin-walled plastic tube - not the easiest of mediums - Sue speeded it up with a little cinema magic. I also think I shouldn't do three things at once:- breathe, talk and saw..LOL. Best Wishes Andy

    Hi, Thanks for the enquiry. The 'objective' end of the tube i.e. facing the sun, I secured a piece of opaque plastic (I used the inner from a wine box) but some left over solar film will do. I pierced a hole with a pin in the centre of this now taut surface. At the opposite end of the tube I adhered a piece of masking tape sufficient to cover the diameter, this translucent material acts as the screen. cont....

    Well done. I have a 10" SCT and the cost of a complete filter was $120. Using your plan,I can cut a piece of 10" sonotube that was left over from a homemade dew shield project for $58 of filter material. I like your cosmetic material covering. It looks like the techniques I use in my unprofessional carpentry work to cover up misalignments.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for your comment, we really appreciate it. We put quite some time into trying to present our work in an 'artistic' way and also in editing to the musical pieces we choose. I'm glad you like the pace of the video because we do quite quick edits to keep it up beat and positive, a sort of roller-coaster ride into recycling and repurposing, so it's great to get feedback. Best Wishes from France, Organikmechanic aka Andy

    Since most manufacturers sell 'flat' face on filters (i guess its cheaper) there will be resistance for angled mounts using reflectve filters.
    i have mine mounted at ~20 degrees, (the exact angle is not really important with this kind of filter - but can be for specialist filters), but it should be large enough to avoid the re-reflections from inside the telecope.
    Basically, you want to avoid the re-reflections of your eye/CCD/secondary etc superimposed on the solar disk.

    I should also add that it is worth experimenting with off-center kidney bean shaped 'masks' (to see the effect of reduced aperture verses contrast improvements).

  • @blobrana
    @blobrana 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    With this kind of solar filter it is, ideally, better to not cut the tube straight. The filter is best placed at an angle for better contrast in the images.

    I made a solar filter for my skywatcher ED90 but used cardboard (saw your video too late).
    I'm really interested in the concept behind your pinhole projector finder scope. I've a piece of 20mm PVC pipe (only size that will fit my finder scope mount snugly) that I'll fashion this from with a cap for both ends. Can you explain how you made yours and how you use it. I'm really keen to get this in time for the Venus transit. Thanks in advance.

    Yeah, apparently this AstroSolar film is similar in protection to that offered by welding masks and they do point out the dangers of phototoxic reactions in the eye. Still, as I want to mostly take solar images I'll leave the risk to the camera.
    I've had similar eye fatigue thro' doing too much welding in one session but I'm using an old-fashioned mask (none of this modern auto-darkening stuff):)
    Thanks for watching and commenting.
    Cheers, Andy.

    Thanks for commenting. I haven't seen this information before, it certainly isn't mentioned in the BAADER literature, do you have any idea of the optimum angle? Nice channel by the way I subbed and will be watching your longer sun video over lunch. Cheers Andy

    Nicely done, Andy, How did you design the clips to hold it in place?

    • @Organikmechanic
      @Organikmechanic 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I'd noticed this kind of fitting on a food processor. I thought of using the existing screw heads on the telescope tube as the means of holding the filter in place and the 'dog-leg' slots were a natural development for ensuring the filter stayed in place. The small locking arms made from off cuts of the tube were merely a 'belt and braces' security backup so nothing could shift. All the best from Normandie, Andy

    DO NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE BUT A RECOMENDED SOLAR FILTER!!!!!!. I bought my film from Amazon, but with your 'scope you can use the solar projection technique to safely view the sun. Check it out on Google.
    Thanks for watching and please check on the net the safety rules for solar observing. Happy obsertving and Best Wishes from Basse-Normandie Andy aka Organikmechanic.
