- The Gullah: Roots of Black America | History Documentary
75% of all enslaved Africans coming to America came in through Beaufort and the sea islands of South Carolina. This beautiful and picturesque tourist destination, by its unique history, is the epicenter of the Gullah culture and the foundation of African American history; the result of the mingling of West African slaves with the plantation culture awaiting them in America.
The Gullah culture is most popularly portrayed in its language, food, art, and storytelling, with the underlying message that the lessons of the past must never be forgotten.
Circle Unbroken - A Gullah Journey from Africa to America portrays the story of these resilient people in music by The Gullah Kinfolk and narrative through the eyes of Anita Singleton-Prather - 'The First Lady of Gullah.'
Black/Current is a space to provide both educational and entertaining content primarily by or about Black people. That’s Black Brits, Black Americans, Black Africans, Black Canadians, Black Australians and so forth. There is a really loud desire for diverse voices and stories and we want to be a part of that conversation.

I am so lucky to have stumbled upon this. I don't know what took so long to find out about the Gullah Geechie but what an incredibly rich heritage. I'm in awe.

How can your relate to struggle when you Beecher didn’t not experience generational slavery that lead for many African Americans to lose a lot of their heritage physically not genetically.

How is we should trust in a book they brought from Europe and gave to us to read? How is it you believe in their god but don’t seek to find who you’re god was before you met those who enslaved and dehumanized us? Seriously though my mom gets mad when I ask this question. @@ronaldjackson8869"That book" came from the scrolls in Jerusalem where our forefathers came from. Our forefathers were kicked out for their continued disobedience to God's laws. Those wicked demons who enslaved us served as punishers for our disobedience. And they twisted the wording of the bible to fit their agenda..like they do everything else. All of the books of the bible were written by our forefathers, Israelites...who ARE BLACK PEOPLE. Those demons are going to pay.
I still have people in Orangeburg,SC. So many people in my family are indistinguishable from West Africans. I don’t need a DNA test to tell me where to trace my roots. I enjoyed the singing. Watched this twice.

Beautiful video. Just took me wayyy back to my roots in Charleston. Now live in Chicago. Most close relatives were from a little town call Dale, SC ( just north of Beaufort.) Great job!!!!!!
It estounds me how strong the christian faith was/is amoung the old and modern african American communities. It makes me wanna go learn more about the origins of the Ame church and how Christianity spread thru slave populations.

Well done! I visited Beaufort SC, and your video gave me a deeper perspective. Thank you for sharing the knowledge. One thing I wonder about is language. Although you said most came from Western Africa, weren't there are lot of different languages in that area of the world? If so, what did that do to their ability to communicate with each other? Anybody know where I can find out more?

Born in Charleston , but moved to New York after my dad died. Attended schools Henry P Archer grade school, East Bay elementary School, Simonton Jr High and freshman year at Burke High. I miss my native city, but don't want to move back.

Apply for farm status. taxes are the reduced and the difference is deferred until someone wants to develop then ALL deferred taxes must be paid by the person who wants to develop. If this is some of the most expensive property in the US those taxes will mount quickly making it very very expensive to get any development project started. In some locations keeping bees is enough to qualify for farm status. In addition farms are subject to a whole new set of laws so there may be some new risk/reward there. This may not work but I believe it is worth investigating.

Alot of gullahs have barbados roots for the first 200 years of slavery the salves came from barbados and Jamaica most don't know SC was a colony of Jamaica at one point too!

The Barbados slave code was very key to the society formed there. Many slave masters from Barbados went there too.
Colonies did not form other colonies. When you say SC was a colony of Jamaica, what do you mean?
I am an African America originally born and raised in Africa been visiting different former African towns all over the east coast now in mid west Missouri.
You are not African American, you are the race of people your parents are. My people are truly African Americans because we relate ancestrally to the slavery in the us, you cannot. Place does not change your ethnicity. Stop lying about your ethnicity

My GGG Grandmother was from Senagal, my Twin, myself and my brother and my sister all carry Senegal DNA when we took our DNA test. My GGG Grandmother married a Planter in Fairfield South Carolina, they had 9 Children. Her daughter My GG Grandmother on the Census records was Mulatto married a Planter as well in Charleston. She had 10 Children.
I have a copy of a Tin type of GGG Grandmother and a photo GG Grandmother.
These people are not like the rest of the Black folks here in America. They a different ethnic group from the FBA group.
They are our people, stop trying to denounce the cultural diversity in our ethnic group.

Most but not all. Various African descendants came from/ through various countries and slave ports. Not all came through the Low Country.
The Sea Islands produce the finest cotton in the world. Unfortunately it is not available i n commercial quantities As a hand spinner I had the good luck to acquire 2 ounces of it at a trade show. To spin it is like handling silk. The thread is so fine it can be even hard to see!
