Meteorologists and governments have been using the term “atmospheric river” more often in order to better communicate the impact of an incoming rainstorm. The ability to differentiate between a standard rainstorm and one that could devastate a region has become essential
"Atmospheric rivers are relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere - like rivers in the sky - that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics. While atmospheric rivers can vary greatly in size and strength, the average atmospheric river carries an amount of water vapor roughly equivalent to the average flow of water at the mouth of the Mississippi River. When the atmospheric rivers make landfall, they often release this water vapor in the form of rain or snow." NOAA

Everybody in the world knows that air flow onto land from the oceans has to carry at least as much moisture as the water carried back to the ocean via rivers. If that were not true, the continents would eventually be underwater eh? Rain is intermittent whereas rivers flow relatively continuously, so air flows *have* to carry higher water flux than outgoing rivers which are relatively steady. Everybody knows this. Everybody knows that living in a temperate rain forest on the BC coast wit 4x the average rainfall than eastern provinces carries some risks. Have you considered that directly stating that there is a risk of flooding based on estimated rainfall might be more productive than blathering on about atmospheric rivers?
@@El-Comment-8-or Check out the average rainfall per season in BC over the last 100 years. The change per year is quite small. The government, the media and the meteorologists are to blame. BC has always been a temperate rainforest with average rainfalls up to 200inches per year compared to 30inches in Ontario. The aforementioned have a responsibility to stop wasting people's time with jabber about atmospheric rivers and start telling people how much short term rainfall is anticipated and in what regions flooding is to be expected and how to respond. The population has increased significantly, leading people to live in risky areas because city councils are allowing that.
@@TheGruntski Yes, increased populations are a contributing factor to these deaths. However you can’t focus solely on the part of the issue that fits into your narrative and ignore the rest. As someone who works in natural resource management, the biggest issue we face is changing weather. What your brief scan of weather data fails to notice is that there’s a big difference between receiving 1000 millimeters of rain in dozens of rainstorms throughout the year, versus getting that in just a few big dumps.
@@El-Comment-8-or You are misrepresenting the data, which is shameful. Rain is intermittent and seasonal while river discharge is variable but not as variable. The integral of a train of rain impulses must always represent the total integrated water discharge from river systems.
