I've read seven classics out of my 33 read so far this year! This year I'm really picking up a lot of the classics books, like Crime and punishment, The Bunch back of Notre Dame, and Little Women. You've really encouraged me to read more classics! Thank you!
1:56 Animal Farm 2:33 Metamorphosis 2:58 Prince Caspian 3:12 David Copperfield 3:47 I know why the caged bird sings 4:07 Once there was a war 4:36 Catcher in the Rye 5:20 I have more souls than one 6:08 Farewell to arms 6:45 Catcher in the Rye again 8:00 Peter Pan Changes were made after the initial ranking Note: I was surprised at how you despised Catcher in the Rye especially in HIGHSCHOOL, the best time to express teenage angst. Glad you gave it a chance. It's my favorite book and I don't think I'd love reading as much as I do now if I never read it in my teens.
I read 17 classics so far this year and without a doubt Jane Eyre is my favourite with Anne of Green Gables at second spot❤ The catcher in the rye and Metamorphosis are my picks for next month
I should do more rereads again...so many classics have been 'spoiled' in a way by school really. It wasn't until I did my thesis on literature education for children, I realized what devastating effects the ways our schools are treating literature has. I remember I sort of liked Animal Farm when I was sixteen, so that's certainly up for a reread. Absolutely love A Farewell to Arms as well, as do I love Maya Angelou. Some great books there!
The Game of Tomes is my classics reading goal for the year and it’s been very helpful so far. I also was blown away by A Farewell to Arms and could barely get through David Copperfield. I loved a Christmas Carol and Great Expectations, so it’s not just disliking Dickens. Hemingway packs a punch though that is very impactful for me. It seems many people have a strong preference for one or the other of those writing styles (Hemingway vs Dickens or Steinbeck). I’m in the Hemingway camp.
Hello, I'm taking advantage of the fact that I'm in the first ones to tell you that you're my favorite youtuber, I love you 🥰🥰🥰 You talk about things so well you are sweet, funny, and super interesting Another thing: I saw that you often talk about Steinbeck in your videos, especially The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden. They are among my favourite books of all time, you must read them! Don't be afraid of their size, they are definitely worth it. I can't wait for you to read them and see what you think 😊 Lots of hearts on you ❤️❤️❤️ PS: sorry if there are mistakes I am French PPS: as a French person I am in love with your accent (which is...?l). You speak very clearly and it's super easy to understand you, and on top of that you speak in a very soft and singing way, it's very pleasant.
Thank you so much Lison!! 😊💖 Your kind words mean the world to me! I’m very glad to hear you love The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden! I’m excited to read them (hopefully sooner rather than later) 📚 P.S. There were no mistakes, your English is lovely! P.P.S. I’m American/from New York 😊 I hope you’re having a wonderful day!
I really enjoyed your ranking here, thanks! The top two books of your list would be the ones I would have chosen as well. I had a very similar experience with Catcher in the Rye in that I didn’t like it at all in high school but we just reread it in our book club a few months ago and I thought it was great! Strange how a few decades of life & experience can change your perspective. Also, I love Brothers K and am excited to hear your take on it. We’re currently reading through Crime and Punishment which I hope is just as good 😅
If you read Great Expectations, I would love your take on this classic. Thanks for your wonderfully informative videos! I’ve learned a great deal from them and introduced me to new authors.
You should definitely read some of kafkas short stories!! My favourite short story by kafka is the hunger artist but it would be interesting to hear what short story you like most!
your videos are awesome. Also, I was able to purchase your Mr Knightley and I simply loved it! I would love some videos if your make up routine as well 🙂Thank you!!!!
Yes to the Catcher in the Rye love! I read that for the first time this year and it's the only 5 star I've given this year (that wasn't a reread). So incredibly impactful to me.
The catcher in the rye was SO GOODD i read it like 3-4 times growing up and did my junior thesis on it. Like even when i read it when i was 5 i loved it (though tbh i didnt reaaally understand it until my second read-through much later)
I like that computer program you are using and definitely get choosing an almost order then fine tuning the exact ranking. For even more Catcher in the Rye moods the movie ‘My Salinger Year’ will not disappoint. P.S. I blame Dickens.
If you struggled with David Copperfield I can very much recommend the Audible (UK) version which is read by the actor Martin Jarvis. A long listen but the superb narration brings the characters to life and helps you through the slower paced sections.
How interesting to see this. And to then try to exercise. My 1) is David Copperfield. I absolutely loved it and it’s my favourite of his. 2) Little Women 3) Brothers Karamazov 4) 1984 5) The Idiot 6) Once there was a war 7)Farewell to arms 8) Catcher in the rye . I feel like I am throwing a blank but I do think I had other classics, but that clearly made little to know impact 😂
Ohh! I read Sleepy Hollow with my three older children and it probably goes at the number 7 spot. Also reading House of Dies Drear to them and if there is a number ten spot, it’ll be that one 😅
My Classics reading in 2023: 1. Pride and Prejudice 2. Silas Marner 3. Jane Eyre 4. Catcher in the Rye 5. David Copperfield 6. The Old Man and the Sea 7. Octopussy (Though I mostly just enjoyed Tom Hiddleston's narration) 8. Of Mice and Men 9. The Bluest Eyes 10. Emma (dnf) 11. A Farewell to Arms (also DNF)
Very nice to see "Silas Marner" and "Of Mice and Men" on your list. I always thought Silas Marner didn't get the credit it deserved. I read it at school over 50 years ago and it really got me into reading, which if nothing else has cost me a fortune over the years. Stay well and enjoy your reading.
You’re really convincing me to give The Catcher in the Rye another chance! I DNFed it in high school, but I also thought I hated Hemingway before A Farewell to Arms. Might be time to reread since I’ve clearly changed so much!
i have have read the catcher in the rye when i was in middle school, i dont think it was a good time for me to read it, i was not aware enough to understand issues covered in this book, i would love to reread it someday
Peter Pan is my favorite book of all time. It’s so complicated and unhinged and bittersweet. Every time I read it, I pull out something new. The more I learn about the time era, the more I can see it’s influence on the process of the story. My obsession for it changes as I age. Peter Pan is a character that I hate to love, and love to hate. Penguin has an amazing forward/introduction about Barrie’s life and how it may have influenced the story, which makes it even more precious and heartbreaking. The early 2000s adaptation does a fair job at capturing its charm and savageness. It is a bizarre and wonderful tale. I love that there are parts of it that can’t be reasoned with.
Carolyn, what is the next Dickens novel. Animal Farm not on my list, really dislike the novel. Hemingway would be the first on my list of these books. Prince Caspian, David Copperfield and Peter Pan would be with Hemingway. The others I can't judge as I haven't read them all. I have the Steinbeck still to read, unfortunately I haven't gotten to it yet. To these classics I would add Little Women and Anne of Green Gables, my list would also include The Forsyte Saga, Barchester Towers (Trollope), and probably Bleak House (Dickens) or Little Dorrit, which I loved, also a Dickens.
I read 6 classics so far this year: Kilmeny of the Orchard L.M. Montgomery Theatre S.Maugham The Call of the Wild J. London Alice’s adventures in Wonderland L. Carroll The Secret Garden F. Burnett Macbeth W. Shakespeare Also was close to finishing A Tale of Two Cities by C. Dickens but gave up and DNFed.

Surprised you and your friend Amy talk so much about Charles Dickens - I always considered him more of a children/teen writer and not in the same category with the other classic literature's Greats
I think you are suffering from a case of Dickensitis. You have read too many Dickens novels on a too short period of time. If you had not read all his previous work before, do you think you would love David Copperfield more?
Ranking is very difficult. Seriously, how do you honestly compare a children's nighttime bed story (Peter Pan) to a scathing social commentary (Animal Farm)? Two totally different audiences and goals... (to steal an analogy) like judging a fish on how well it climbs a tree. Other Booktubers use a tier-ranking system, which I think is a better representation when comparing different styles of books. With 5 tiers, I would put Animal Farm and Kafka in my In my topmost tier,. I would put Catcher in the bottommost tier and Dickens in the tier just above that. Yes hahaha 😆
You are so clever! Thanks for this.
You are totally allowed to dislike a book, even if it's a classic 😊 There's no need to excuse yourself ❤
