As a sufferer of mental illness I'm finding Stephen's discussion of the experience of mental health issues very good. It is real. The blackness that falls down is without the hope of finding a light switch. It's debilitating, immobilising and utterly dreadful because it is so real, and it's something no-one but yourself can feel. If you have never experienced depression it's impossible to create it or understand it. And yes, a sufferer without acceptance and support does lose everything until self-harm and eventually suicide is the only way out. If you don't get the 'relief' of mania - and I say that advisedly because I don't have that experience and can't know what it's like - it's a living nightmare. Thank you Stephen for throwing out a light.
Post script: I am however disappointed that Stephen has chosen to distinguish bipolar disorder from personality disorders, suggesting that somehow the latter is a reflection of who the sufferer is as a person and therefore to my mind arguing that it is their fault. I have BPD and believe me when I attest that it is a devastating condition, with unremitting periods of depression not alleviated by mania. All mental health issues are serious and often life threatening. A sufferer should never be somehow attributed with blame for it. BPD results from a combination of genetic disposition and early environment/experiences. Medication is pretty ineffective for a personality disorder because it involves a disorder of one's thinking which often leads to severe depression and anxiety.
I don't believe that my acceptance and support would have saved my sister. It makes me sad to think about because I loved her but every contact for years was painful. I will always wish that I had thought of a way to be still supportive.
A Master of Language and Articulation, Fry is mesmerising! You can hear his passion from the tonal changes, Thespian 101 I suppose. And a Rockstar, when talking about the next guest, ex conservative leader, "if he is going to be drinking the same water, then I'm going to have to piss in this bottle!" Rock On Stephen! Long Live Enlightenment!
I'm surprised this had only around a thousand 'logged-in' views in two years. Stephen makes a great number of quotable points here that I haven't heard in any of his other videos; especially in the Q&A session.
One of my living heroes!!!! Impossible to listen to him and not remain under the weather. I've never bothered to query him on one question: I did my doctorate which involved a lot of semiotics, the premise of which is that language is a closed system and the referent, that reality out there, is excluded by the way we use language. I long to ask Stephen Fry if he might agree that art, whether produced by language itself, or the visual arts etc. perhaps exists precisely to reach that unreachable: the thing in itself, or possibly its apotheosis. So glad this man is in the world.
I love Stephen all the more so for his love of Ocsar. Oscar was proud of his Irishness. Now after far too long most Irish people reciprocate this pride. So proud of Oscar.
I am a big fan of Stephen. I have a son with Bi Polar. I really appreciate his candid talk around this subject it helps to know someone as intelligent and successful as Stephen has suffered (suffers) and risen above this very debilitating condition He gives me hope. However, for his comfort and our ease of eye I would say 'ditch the sweater' because it's doing just that! Love you hot and sweaty Stephen .. and even more when you're cool xx
I also have a son with Bi Polar disorder. I agree with you on Stephen Fry. It takes courage to be this honest and it must have already helped people in their understanding. It is helpful to me.
I think mental health issues are on the rise because of the public understanding people are less likely avoid people with known issues, likewise, those suffering are more apt to get help because of public understanding.
Booton House he used to live, I used to live quarter of a mile from it. I can imagine what an amazing childhood he had growing up in such an idyllic place
53:20 "If anybody else starts their question with the word 'so', I will refuse to answer it." Excellent! The same sentiment for people who start a sentence with "I mean".
The numbers in the self called Developed world are higher than many called under developed world. Some of the reasons for this can be put in the way life is perceived, how we liberate pressure, stress, and how we deal with the purpose in life. Developed world has focused in "believing" the MIND is all, the most important, and with thousands of questions that most generally are in a negative mode. The pressure of becoming someone, of competition rather than collaboration, the goals and objectives that may not be attained ever.
I am the unlikely one person in my current universe who is not bipolar; I think I'm accepted because I speak rather quickly and we all agree that Stephen Fry is an international treasure. I'm very interested in driven creative people, some of whom succeed and some of whom don't. The list ... JK Rowlings, Tom Petty; I'll stop there for the benefit of brevity. Neither of these people may be of interest to Mr. Fry; but they do have this in common with him. They'd go mad without their words, and/or music. The word enthusiasm applies to Stephen Fry, and others ... inhabited by a god. The god of wisdom, and wit.
The quote which Stephen mentioned of "Don't take away my Devils ............' @ 27:28 which both he and many others have said was by WH Auden, was in fact originally attributable to Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926)
Pleased to hear he is no longer 'self-medicating. and is now on appropriate medication. Although, Olanzapine is known to cause serious weight gain, in some. I watched the programme he talked of and the button option and if it was offered. He interviewed a number of people and then he stated he did not take medication, which sent quite a few people into believing he was just jumping on the gravy train, of back then, and using others for the focus of his supposed mental illness. I am pleased the focus is now on him and that he is going down the well travelled route towards better quality of life with a sever and enduring mental illness. Good luck to him,. a very colourful character the way it was left when some of the pieces were taken away.
I had the worst drug withdrawal symptoms in my life when I came off Olanzapine. Horrendous night sweats and vivid nightmares. Lasted for about 2 weeks. Be really careful if you come off it Stephen!
I would expect the AV department of a major university to come up with better audio/video quality than this. But Stephen rules. Even when the host is bored (58:00).
He seems so insecure in public speaking, to some extent. Then, think of all the times he was before a camera and how much he did ... and learned. Incredible.
I totally, agree with Stephen, when he refers to his insatiable curiosity, and can’t ( to this day understand, why others are lacking in their own curiosity too!!! Video and sound quality of this video is awful. If this is what a top-level university education provides I'm glad for my meagre three O-levels and no degree!

27:24 This report seems to contradict the notion of 'mental illness'. Suppose there were a button you could press that apparently supplies only the *positive* aspects of some exciting or dangerous behaviour. It achieves this by allowing you to plausibly deny both to yourself and others responsibility for the negative consequences. Would you press that one? Looking back I think I've pressed more than one such button during my life.
Love Stephen but this stink of privilege is so obnoxious. What happens to any normal person with a criminal record is well known, and I find his joking about getting into Cambridge absolutely galling.
Did he get in because he was privileged or because he is smart and worked damned hard? Clearly he is not normal, in many respects - and Cambridge could see that.
You mixed something up there. Stephen Fry became famous after Cambridge. He just did very well at his second attempt to the A-levels and got into Cambridge on merit.
sourcescience One should not apologize for being borne into privilege. Especially one who is so incredibly self aware and humble despite his upbringing.
Ok depression is a form of mental illness, seems a bit trendy for celebs. My Mother and thousands other suffer from hearing voices and visions that medicine struggles to suppress. They will never recover. My Mum's 50 year prison sentence, a torment, until she passed away this year at age 76. People like Fry annoy me with their "depression".
Mr. Fry is one of the most fascinating individuals in the whole world. He really is. What an absolute pleasure it is to listen to him.
Talk about hyperbole. He is not THAT interesting
I veto that reply

Could listen to Stephen all day.
He's the kind of fellow i'd love to have a cup of tea with.
Or a pint
I do
Doubtin Thomas - Especially when he does his atheist rants !!
Well he’s not your mate, is he? He’s Stephen Fry
For a university with the prestige of Cambridge, I’d imagine they’d have better equipment and understanding to record with
It's a medieval university; what is sound equipment?
@@splinterbyrd idiot!!
They are home to the Cambridge 5 so understandably their recording techniques are covert and not high budget

Grateful he has helped people understand our mutual condition.
He is encouraging to many. :)
Cambridge Uni students did their best with the audio. That really was their best. Ever.
Stephens bah, every single time gives me a warm smile. It just brings back a memory of comedy gold.

The questioner who commented on Mr Fry's eloquence is close to the truth. He is probably the nearest we now have to Christopher Hitchens.
Stephen Fry makes me feel 8 feet tall.
He is quite small.
Almost 2 meters...
Stephen is 6'5".
This man is brilliant.
"I'll put it through your letter box and you'll fucking read it!" - best ever

Fantastic speech, but the audio quality leaves a lot to be desired!

Who cares about the quality, really, when it's Stephen speaking?
well, respectively, if we can't hear it, it seems kinda pointless.
11:15 “Not just a wit, but a cause of wit in others.” Stephen Fry in a nutshell.
I must put the third of October in my diary.
I would expect the AV department of a major university to come up with better audio/video quality than this. But Stephen rules. Even when the host is bored (58:00).
Considering all the equiptment seemed to fail i think they did a good job
I thought Cambridge would have brewstered in the media department, yet this looks like it's been filmed with a potato and recorded on a pube
I'd press that button in a nano second!
Does anybody know the moderator for this? What is his name?
Why are they using a webcam from the early 90’s and an audio system from the 1920’s?
I am enthralled by these CU speeches/debates, but for goodness sake (and this isn't the only one) get the sound sorted - seriously lets you down.
"Things you are interested in "... as Stephen smirks at the cute boy introducing him
It is a pitty that not many people can stand an extraordinary language and intellectualy challenging content

No. Fry is invited, she's not.
The "housekeeping notices" at the beginning are really a waste of time to youTube viewers, wouldn't you say?
I went to Coventry University. Why don't they race at the boat race ?
I hear Aberdeen, and Newport are good universities. .
