As a pottery and ceramic artisan myself, I think you've done a really great job for your first go on a mini wheel. Here's a tip for your next try... buy a set of pimple poppers from Wish or Amazon to help you clean up your work once the clay is 'leather hard'. Don't allow the clay to dry completely and once it is leather hard, place your creation back on the wheel, then center and fix into place with blobs of wet clay. Use the metal pimple popper tools to take away the excess clay from the little vessel for a much finer finish and best wishes from a fellow Aussie potter!
Hello, I want to get one of these but do you need something specific to bake it? Do you bake them in an oven?
@@emilygriffith6702 - yes, you need a kiln to fire the clay. Hobby kilns can be found online or at ceramic supply stores. Even a small kiln can be expensive. Look for a pottery studio in your area - they might fire your creations for you. Also contact your local council to find out if they have a community kiln. It looks like Tina does not fire her work. Best wishes.
To ask a silly question.....given that so little clay is used in each piece, would it be possible to throw air dry clay, providing you keep it wet and work quickly? Thanks in advance :)
@@petafowlerneelavery9303 I've never tried air dry clay. It's certainly possible, but it has a lot of fibres so won't finish as smoothy as real clay. I think you'd have to sand it smooth with a fine grit sand paper once it's dry. I don't know what type of clay Tina uses, but air dry is worth a go! Have fun!
@@petafowlerneelavery9303 I’m just seeing this now so I don't know if you’re still trying air dry clay. One that may work well is WED Clay, or Walter E. Disney. It’s a slower drying clay used a lot in the film industry..

This is so cute. Your hair looks so good! Love the bangs, and the color has grown on me.
Art teacher here: if it starts to feel out of control slow the speed down, only needs to be fast for the initial centering - can go at a “lackadaisical” pace for the rest of shaping is how I describe it to students, just can’t make too many sudden movements. That “grain” is probably due to it being earthenware, stoneware or porcelain can feel a bit smoother on the wheel but you just have to be careful the porcelain doesn’t get too water logged or it will lose its shape. Such a fun video, I’m thinking I should see if our school can get some of these just in case we go fully online here in the states so my students can still try “throwing on the wheel” at home.

I have nails and in my 3d art class we were sculpting with ceramic clay and i would always leave C-marks in the clay 🙊 you can use nails to your advantage however if you want a cool texture or design. Cute pottery 💕

I used to do pottery in high school. I really wish I could try it again, but idk where I would do it. I remember my favorite tool being a piece of bendable clear plastic. I used it to shape and smooth all of the rims and sides.
Shimpo makes a smaller sized wheel called the Aspire that’s portable! I work with it in half an office that I share with my husband and it’s great. You should look into it! I stay pretty clean 😊 everyone should be able make pottery if they want to!

This was totally yesterday's throwing session for me! Ive got the same wheel, but I was lucky and got it for £17! I find when centering if you brace your index finger with your middle finger you can get better control. Although I must say my wheel is covered in clay by the end of one pot! Beats me how you work so cleanly!!

You can lightly sand them down too when they are dry 😊 It would just tidy them up and smoothen them and take bumps away 😁 but well done!!! ❤️

maybe need a tiny sponge to smooth it at the end. they often use soft sea sponge on pots to smooth them when doing it on bigger wheels
