Autumn colors in Cansiglio

  • Cansiglio is a plateau of the Belluno Pre-Alps between the provinces of Belluno, Treviso and Pordenone at an altitude between 900m and 1200m above sea level.
    Almost the whole territory is covered by forests that take the name of “Foresta del Cansiglio”.
    Among the plants the native beech-tree (faggetta ) predominates while the spruce ( abete rosso ) is widespread.
    At the time of the Serenissima (Venice Republic) , the Cansiglio was called "Bosco da reme di San Marco" because the beech was used to produce the oars (reme) of Venetian galleys.
