  • In 1910 a disastrous fire broke out aboard a Great Lakes vessel. It became the first ever mid-lake shipwreck to be covered in the media as it happened. This was all thanks to a new-fangled technology called "wireless."
    This video covers that story. Of course it is so obscure that very few images actually exist- so I had to create a bunch of my own to illustrate the story.

    My 3x Great uncle died on a flaming ship in Lake Michigan. He was only 20 years old. It was called the Seabird. Manitowoc, WI to Waukeegan, IL. He was 1 of 6 crew members. One of the crew members threw embers into the wind which landed on hay bales. It might've been him. This is extra tragic: his parents came to the USA after their eldest son drowned in the North Sea while working on a ship out of Rotterdam. The family moved inland after the Seabird disaster. There used to be a video on TH-cam about it, but it was so obviously disrespectful that my spouse contacted the uploader (who agreed) and took it down. Rest in peace, uncle August Wilde.

    That was really interesting Wes! I did not know that wireless was used that early on the Great Lakes. Thanks for sharing this.

    Great one Wes! One of my grandmother's favourite stories was telling about a trip on one of the Cobourg Ontario to Rochester New York car ferry , on Lake Ontario. She was extremely impressed when she went up to the wireless room on a Captain's tour, and watched the telegrapher decode the weather and news onto message pads then shown to the Captain and passengers. She was not clear about the date of this trip when I heard the story in the late 1970's but I think these particular ferries got their first wireless telegraphy sets about 1913. She and another lady made many trips on the ferries with various cars she and Gramps had, to shop and tour around Rochester, from about 1919 / 1920 into the 1950's. Cheers!

    Really enjoyed this video, Wes! It goes long to the point concerning the media, "We don't have to be accurate, just first". It's funny how much some things haven't changed.

    Strangely, (I swear) I was thinking just this morning that I was going to have to go to your site to check to make sure I hadn’t missed any of your videos. Perfect timing.

      Welcome back! I'm writing my next book and doing the videos at the same time. Recently I've been slowed by computer and software issues, but I'm getting back on track. Of course, now I need to shut down- I hear thunder nearby and a lightning strike can put the nix on my computers. It's always something eh?

    Fascinating story.
    It would only be about a year and a half later where wireless would play a big part in the Titanic story.
    Not sure I'd have gone with "disaster" - usually I attribute that to loss of life. However, I also can't think of another word that quite captures the feel, so... 🤷‍♀

    • @authorwes
      @authorwes  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually "Disaster" is a TH-cam key word- it attracts more viewers in common searches. They have a list of title words that they prefer.

    Its astonishing how messages were given on the fly back in the day before the 1970's give or take

    30 mile singal. Must be a flat earth or the curve is bigger that we are told. Makes you wonder.

      @authorwes  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That mileage may not be exact... this was long before GPS, as you well know. I recently researched an event that the records for the day said 54 miles and it ended up being 22. I just state what's in print from back in the day
