Thank you so much for making this video. I was at lose, I used 2 spoon fulls of the satin enamel because I wasn’t sure how much to use and this helps so much.
Omg this video is extremely helpful I have watched Mely D do her cloudy effects and it’s beautiful but not knowing how to mix the paint so I’m going give it a try and hopefully it’ll turn out as beautiful as yours thanks again Heather you’re a great teacher and artist.
Oh my!! Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial.. it's over my head only because I'm a beginner and my brain's a little slow 🤪😊 I'm saving because I know I'll use it in the future.. Thank you again and God bless you for blessing us! 😘
Heather, thank you so very much for this tutorial. I have watched tons of videos and have wasted so much paint because the videos I was watching never showed how to mix the paint, great watching them, but if they don't show how to mix the paint, it is a waste of my time and paint. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Linda Nash well... the “mixing” of paint is personal, and it should be personal to you too! Find what works for you. One formula does not work for ALL paints. Except, maybe 1 part paint to 2 parts floetrol... but even then u still need to add a little water in some instances
@@HeatherMaderArt Hi Heather. Thanks for getting back to me. I reread what I posted and it should have said the thickness or thinness of the paint, not the mixing. I should reread before posting lol.
Heather, thank you sooooooo much for sharing this information. I have been flummoxed by not getting the cloud effects that you do and now I now why. I have just recently found your channel and am loving it. You are now my fave!! Can't wait for morning to get at a wood panel I just re-gessoed. Ugh to what was on here before. lol Your explanations are wonderful and I love your calm, soothing voice. I haven't mastered the balloon roll yet tho. That is still flummoxing me! Haven't got a big enough balloon I think.
Thanks so much Heather. I realize now, that I don’t have Liquitex Pouring medium. I just got the Satin Enamel, so next payday hopefully I’ll be making clouds! I’ve been watching MelyD’s videos, but got to have right materials. So glad you shared this ❤️✝️👍
Thanks so much for these recipes. Will try to follow and hope that it works. This is so scientific and chemical oriented. I learned about specific gravity from Danny Clark the other day. Lol. It's all very interesting and keeping my mind fresh. Important for us older generation. Love your artistic skills. Thank you so much for your great videos.
Debbie Harback you are welcome! I think there is science of course and intuition and creative thinking...but also color theory. And that all comes into play in this fluid Art form!
Thank you so much for all this good info. I really appreciate the info you are sharing. I love your work and I can’t wait to give you and MellyD’ (love me some MellyD) recipe a try.
Hi Heather. I’ve found the artist loft fluid acrylic to be very thick. I wondered if I was getting old bottles, but found that wasn’t the case. Speaking of glue. I used glue, flotrol and acrylic paint in my first try. It turned out better than my remaining tries although the cells weren’t big, they were uniform.
Thank you so much, Heather, for this tutorial. I never knew these things, but I do know that there must’ve been a “run” on DecoArt Americana Satin Enamel in White, because I have found none in the stores. I have to buy from Amazon third parties and it takes a while to get it with higher prices, of course. Again, appreciate you.
thanks for setting down the recipes so nice. I also like your pour paintings. They are unusual and very little like so much of what you see in the pour world. So please keep that up. Now after all that I hate to ask questions but you have won my trust so here goes. Have you tried owatrol instead of floetrol and Behr's satin enamel instead of Decoart? And how do they differ, if you have. Right now my studio is a mess but three or four weeks from now should be all remodeled and ready to go at which time I will be using gac 800 as a pouring medium and regular gel to add vibrancy and to extend paint. Any thoughts? Thank you again for sharing, keith and happy cooking. Every time I come across a chef, I realize how much I miss Anthony Bourdain.
I'm going to answer all your questions: 1. Owatrol yes - its thicker and works good with the Golden fluids. But it is more expensive than floetrol, and it doesn't seem to provide the same "lacing" effect of floetrol. 2. I've tried different satin enamel house paints and yes they work, but they tend to "break" for me. Some people use them perfectly with no issues. 3. I don't know if I would recommend GAC800 as your whole pouring medium because it is so thin. But if you decide to go that way - the golden paints and golden products TOGETHER, make an amazing finish to the painting. 4. You said you were using regular gel? Do you mean gloss medium? Gel is pretty thick to be using as a pouring medium. 5. Sigh....Anthony Bourdain.....I literally sobbed. There have only been a few celebrities I've cried over, and he was one of them. (along with Princess Di and Prince) lol.
thank you so much Heather for these recipes. I have been trying forever to get any kind of cloud effect but to no avail. I will be trying this recipe as soon as I get the decoArt satin enamel. You are a doll and MelyD also. Thanks so much for sharing this info.

Very beautiful work. ❤️ Thank you for talking about your mixing formula, I am still quite discouraged, living in Canada , we can’t buy Flowtrol , any idea for substitute ?
Hi Heather...I just came across your video, thanks so much for publishing this. I have been struggling with the cloud effect for some time now...lol it's almost a standing joke between my daughter and I. Is is possible to use floetrol in the enamel mixture, or does it have to be liquext E? Love watching your videos, your voice is so soft and your paintings are beautiful. Keep up the good work and God bless you.
Rose Marie Lynn I don't suggest using floetrol only. I suggest using half artist loft white and half Decoart and a touch of water if needed. I was just saying u sure could try and see what happens!
Heather Mader Art I use artists loft white with the decoart enamel, was only curious about using floetrol instead of liquext E...since at this time I have none. Thanks Heather ♡
Sue - it might not be the same becase this video was at least 5 years ago. :) But they used to make this soft body acrylic they called "flow" acrylic. I think any white will do.
I have tried with other white paints as we can’t get artistloft here in Australia and have had no success at all I’m going to try again and follow yours step my step with the Windsor
Hi Heather, I now have my Liquitex PM!! I was wondering, do you use the same base coat on your canvas? I’m still watching this, I’m really grateful, I try to write it down.❤️❤️❤️
I rarely use a base coat anymore! I find I just don't need it unless I'm doing a flip and drag cup or an open cup. But if I did, I would NOT use Satin Enamel white on my base coat. It will eat up all the other colors.
thank you. Yes it is gloss gel. I'm going to have to pick up some floetrol and see how they work. I hear you have to strain it. Since Anthony traveled the whole world and was known world wide and loved world wide, the whole world is just a little darker now he is gone and my chest is a little heavier thinking about him..
Put a little piece of pantyhose secured with a rubber band around the mouth of the floetrol bottle. The lid will still screw on. This will automatically filter it . I buy the little footie pantyhose at the dollar tree .
thank you for these sharing your great recipes. I’m so sorry if this is a repeat question but do you add the enamel pm to just the white or all the other colors you are using also? If not what do you mix the other colors with?
Can you add acrylic paints to these recipes to tint them? Would that work? For instance DecoArt has a Dark Denim shade. Could you use that and mix it with paynes gray maybe? Would it have the same effect?
I've tried mixing regular acrylics and the white kind of just eats it up. You end up with a very very very pale pastel. But u should experiment. I haven't found that ANY of the other Decoart shades act the same as the Satin Enamel pure white
Thank you heather. I just received an order from Michaels on Artists Loft White in the 32oz bottles and the paint is thick and has large pieces of paint that comes out in large clumps. It seems like the paint is old.
A fresh bottle should not have clumps. As long as the clumps dissolve when u stir, it should still work. But if they don't or they are hard clumps....get a refund!!
Heather in another video I just watched of yours your recipe for the cloud effect was deco art satin enamel and floetrol 50/50. That video was 10 months ago also. Did you change your recipe or do you get a different effect?
You get different effects with different amounts. My cloud effect is MelyD version and has always been 50/50 Satin Enamel to Artist Loft White with a squirt of Liquitex Pouring Medium. But I will use satin enamel white mixed in with my regular white to get different effects.

I'm not sure what your asking my dear - can you re-phrase?
Thank you for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your welcome!
Your art is beautiful. Question, is the satin enamel/ artist loft the base coat or do you use that as a paint?
I think your definition & my definition of 50% are not the same. Inconceivable!
It is probably the camera angle
But the best thing you can do is try it out for yourself and do your own research 👍🏻 Devise your own recipes and do what works for you.
Thank you
Thanks for this tutorial! Can any brand of satin enamel be used or just the decoart?
Decoart is the only one I've tested.
Question: Could you / i use actualy a regular acrylic enamels paint for furniture from any hardware store instead the Decoart Satin Enamels? No?
You can try - but honestly there is a special effect from this particular brand .
Sadly this only works with the artistloft we can’t get that in Australia
Can you add acrylic paints to these recipes to tint them? Would that work? For instance DecoArt has a Dark Denim shade. Could you use that and mix it with paynes gray maybe? Would it have the same effect?

Heather if you are doing a larger canvas do you still only use that tiny bit of Liquitex pouring medium? What would be the ratios for a larger canvas?
Um... well u need more paint so your cup would be bigger so u would use more.
Heather in another video I just watched of yours your recipe for the cloud effect was deco art satin enamel and floetrol 50/50. That video was 10 months ago also. Did you change your recipe or do you get a different effect?

Winsor and Newton white or Amsterdam white or GOLDEN titanium white
I used Creative Inspirations. From Jerry’s Artarama
I just tried the cloud effect using the recipe above and all 3 of my attempts cracked really badly. Any idea why?
The paint may have been too thick on the canvas overall, which is the main reason why my paintings will Crack.
Can you use liquitex gloss medium and varnish?
I’m not familiar with using it exclusively. I will say this…. A very popular pouring artist uses it “in place of” doing a final varnish coat. I own one of her paintings and after several years it has tremendously faded. But the paintings I’ve sealed with GOLDEN satin or gloss spray varnish still look bright and brand new.
So if u decide to use it - please still varnish your final work!
Can I add a paint colour to my white satin enamel? I use behr's satin enamel because it's hard to find and way more expensive than the Behr.
You can but it will make even the most vibrant colors”pastel” and it can really take over the color.

Cher Fauvél well milk paint can work too if u can find that, and some kinds of house paint.

Yes and none of them have the same effect for some reason

The soft body is the same yes! I think they just changed the name
