I have CryoUtilities installed and undervolted at -20. 2TB NVMe with 1.5TB microSD. DeckyLoader and run everything 36fps using 72 refresh rate. 36 feels just like 40, and 40 feels dang close to 60, yet 36 gives WAY better battery life. Crazy what a difference 6 fps makes.
Awesome setup, dude! And yes, I totally agree with you. I often lock it at 36 fps because I feel the most noticeable difference is between 30 and 36 fps. While increasing it to 45 fps is obviously good, there are definitely diminishing returns beyond that.
For HL: Go to more heavier Areas like Hogsmeat to check the performance and for FPS-Lock don't combine the Deck-Lock and the In-Game Lock. This makes problems. Use the Unlimited FPS in the Game and lock it on the Deck directly. It works better.
I find capping the frame rate from in game settings often creates frame rate issues. I have a feeling that it's because the in-game FPS cap somehow changes the hertz cap as well, and that might interfere with the Deck's built in hertz cap.
Whenever Steam deck built-in framerate limiter is used you must uncap framerate from the game or viceversa, if you don’t do it that way, more latency on gpu and frame loss is what you gonna get in every single game that uses proton
Jedi has actually low settings tho. Just pick the medium preset, change any individual setting, select the graphics preset setting again, and hit the b button. Using a mix of low and medium along with a mod that injects temporal upsampling allows for a solid 50-60 even in actually demanding areas.
Ultra settings would work in most AAA games on the deck. Just drop shadow res down to minimum and you'll gain like 15fps+ from it. Turning AA off would also dramatically increase performance/stability. Easy 30fps lock. That's how I'll play Hogwarts A capped (ingame) frame rate, is a capped performance. I always over ride my games with my GPU driver when it comes to capping frame rate, keeping Vsync and frame cap off in game In my theory, I think it's bcuz when you cap your frame rate, your hardware only exerts so much power for the frame cap. Which is why it drops suddenly during scenarios in game, just to boost its power back up to get back to the target frame cap. It becomes inconsistent and fluctuates. Compared to just keeping the limit off and making your device give its all constantly, being limited only by an external source (Such as drivers or refresh rate w/ Sync) If I were to cap my game at 30fps in game, it'd only exert power for that 30 only. Under-achieve. If I were to cap it at 120fps, then my PC would push itself to the maximum in attempt to reach 120fps, over performing the 30fps cap, giving me a perfect and unwavering 33.33ms. Over-Achieve But it's not like this with erry game
this is a great insight thanks for sharing all that with me. I think i will no longer be using the in game frame rate cap anymore.. you are not the first to mention this.
I play most of my games on high to ultra settings, capped at 30fps for consistency. I'm using a 2022 14 inch gaming laptop that is power restricted due to its size, but have been looking at the steam deck. Looks like it'll play just like I need it to
Max it out, turn Shadows, Ambeince Occlusion (AO), and Anti Aliasing (AA) to the lowest or off, and it should run at a solid 30fps AA, AO, and Shadow quality have the biggest impact on performance in erry game. It's a luxury only for those that can afford it
It's challenging to say because I often prefer playing games at a higher quality with 30 fps. Some people, however, vehemently argue that games are unplayable at 30 fps. So, my opinion that this is acceptable might not align with others, which is why I aim to present all perspectives. I do point out if I find a game unplayable, and in some cases, I specify how I would personally configure and play it. Additionally, and perhaps this is a noteworthy suggestion, the best settings I recommend are usually a custom mix.
@@nophacetech 30fps is VERY playable. But achieving console-level of smoothness in 30fps on PC is nearly impossible. I've only managed to get a rly smooth/silky 30fps experience in Persona 5 Royal on my laptop I used to play some games at 30fps on my laptop that werer also 30fps on my Switch, like MHRise. I could lower the settings to the minimum possible and no matter what I did, the 30fps on PC was NOWHERE near as smooth as on the Switch, regardless of frame time
While there is no doubt higher fps is better. For a portable device people should be aware they will need to compromise something. From my experience I run a few games with a bit lower settings than I could, kept lock at 30, to get better time on battery. Of course there are some games (like racing) when I might rather sacrifice resolution and graphical fidelity than frame rate. It is all balancing act.
Dude you might wanna test the settings in others more demanding areas like in Hogsmeat village or so. Also there quite more recents AAA games to test than fallen order and hellblade to display the steamdeck oled abilities.
Absolutely, I plan to make many more videos. However, it's great to get some older, high-quality games running at around 70 fps, especially with the OLED screen. Any game recommendations? I have a master list from peoples recommendations.
Well obviously Red dead redemption 2, Cyberpunk, spiderman are probably amongst the best openworld graphics that's running great on steamdeck utilizing HDR. Otherwise I know it might not be your cup of tea but some vs fighting games like MK11 or Guilty strive, dbz fighterZ are absolutely stunning at 60fps on this gorgeous oled screen.
Nice RDR 2 was on this list but i couldn't sign in haha so hopefully the next one.. Cyberpunk was in the last video so go check that out :D. spiderman actually hasn't been put on the list yet ill add that.
Great I'm going to check it. You can also add Mortal Kombat 11 on the list, it's really quite technically impressive on steamdeck oled. Also there a bunch of Sony ports like God of War, Horizon, Ratchet and clank, Uncharted. Life of P is also a recent release that looks great on the deck.
Frame consistency on Hogwarts seems to be terrible in general, I still find it impressive that a 15w igpu is capable of handling such a game. Even its closest peers (Rog ally and Legion Go) seem to be unable to compete at that wattage.
well i got a mod that i installed on like cyberpunk but still lots of games don't have it. What do you mean most have it and you just have to enable it?
Combat in Hogwarts would have been a better tester , or in the tower with all the pictures and NPCs , just running around in the dark at night isn’t a good test imo
On Hogwarts Legacy you repeatedly say “very playable” on each setting. Yet all you did was run around the castle and no combat. Not a real test of the game to judge the actual fps on demanding scenes. (Given that there is a LOT of combat in the game)
I might need to revisit Hogwarts.. because also people are saying locking FPS in game is not a good idea. Might be worth going to a different area and trying little different settings.
The problem I have with your test is that you did it in a non-busy area that is literally doing nothing that's really not a test. Yeah you can get it in that area but what about the rest of the game it's a crappy test
