It kinda looks like streaming services are gonna split so much of the shows and movies up, that each streaming service will basically be how tv channels used to be. Each channel had a few good shows and that’s what Netflix and all these other services will be like. Then you’ll need some sort of package deal for what streaming services you get and it’ll be like cable tv all over again 🎉.
i've thought that too....its gonna be like oh Netflix has the tv shows. "ABC" but disney has "XYZ" oh and Amazon prime has "K" and TH-cam plus has "LMNOP" so you.ll end up getting them all...and then they'll just keep pumping up the prices and adding commercials and then we.ll all wake up and go WTF its goddamn cable.

That’s exactly what’s going on & has for a few years now. You cannot get all shows on any streaming service. They each have their own shows and/or channels.
It does have some high quality stuff like Stranger things and a series of unfortunate events but it would be good to have a lot more of very high quality movies that lots of people would want to watch

They're definitely focusing content towards teenage girls more than they should. They're simply not the bill payers, where as Amazon seems to know it's audience. Netflix gained it's fanbase with tense dramas like breaking bad, as far as I can tell they've moved away from that

Disney or Amazon is not the reason for falling numbers of subscribers. People simply are sick of the diversity nonsense that is getting pushed down their throats in entertainment. Some of the shows are simply not entertaining. Umbrella academy, Jessica Jones and Orange is the New black is not appeal to new subscribers. Shows like house of Cards and Narcos really attracted people to the platform because they did not push any sort of political diversity narrative and if they did it was really not noticed. The Likes of the Umbrella academy is not going to attract new people to the platform. People are not interested in super heroes with whiny backstories.

The public just want simple entertainment they do not want to be lectured to or to have shows that are pushing certain narratives because those narratives use up entertainment time. There are only three real streaming platforms and those are Amazon, Hulu and Netflix. And those have been around for some time. The other options are not really competitors such as Sony or HBO that are more niche streaming services. Let me bullet point this for you. Cult like shows do not appeal to the general public. Shows that spend too much time on Diversity tend to eat up the entertainment space and this then makes the show less entertaining. And then last of all There are no real competitors to Netflix at this point. And those that do exist have been around for some time.

On paper, yes. In reality, they are profit focused businesses who have to justify everything to stockholders, and provide them with dividends of the profits. If Amazon Video, Disney+ etc don't turn a profit within a year or two, they will almost certainly be closed down.

And Amazon selling groceries and goods are not the primary source of income. Amazon primary source of income comes from selling cloud storage space for enterprise which every company basically needs these days in a data collecting world. So Amazon can afford to bundle Prime with music and movies and convenient 1 day or 2 day shipping at a constant low price with no worries about profit and customers will keep happy. Disney on the other hand is hoping that Disney+ will reinvent the way that they get revenue for all the services that they own and also hope to keep their services popular with customers. ESPN has seen numerous employment downsizes in the previous years because it was not profitable and ESPN staying on cable providers is becoming problematic for Disney because its a cash drain and only filling cable providers pockets. Movie releases from Marvel and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars have saved Disney and has position the company to remain profitable for now The only one on the edge here is Disney. Despite them having the cash now because in the long run Disney will have to tap into another form of revenue like Amazon and like Apple with the App Store and services like Apple Music. Disney+ will be a hit. But for how Long?
So they are pretty much going to go with a negative balance from Disney+ and fill the gap with the money they get from other sources. Then when they've shut down Netflix & all other streaming services of worth... They are going to be like: Due to increase in cost we are going to raise the price from 12$ a month to 25$ a month... Honestly, I feel like it's counter intuitive. I mean, the whole point of Netflix was that it helped stop piracy since everyone could pay a small price for almost all the content. By having only 2 - 3 options it meant that getting everything was pretty cheap, meaning piracy stopped losing it's main point.
Netflix never had "almost all the content". That's why Netflix DVD (and Blu-Ray) by mail still exists, cable TV still exists and new streaming services are starting. Netflix popularized streaming.

I have a love/hate relationship with Disney. I hate that they've become this money munching monolith, but at the same time Disney is my childhood. Also, I've been with Netflix since the beginning and even though I don't watch it much I still feel like I should be loyal. This is tough. Same. Hate what they've done to star wars but Disney is king of content while Netflix (Which I've subscribed to for like 10 years.), has been really hit or miss these last few years. I love Bojack and F is for family but can't see myself spending almost 20$ a month for them when Hulu & Amazon Prime are also giving me content. If your a millennial like me Sarah, its comparable to itunes/ipods giving way to spotify/amazon prime music and touchscreen smart phones. End of the day they are multi billion dollar corporations that don't care about us except as a revenue stream and we should (as customers), use that power to demand good content or go elsewhere.

Yeah this is gonna kill Netflix. Its always about the content. If the content is good, people will buy. Netflix has this problem where content from other companies like movies and tv shows leave every once in a while. So the only reliable stuff you have is Netflix Original movies and tv shows but thats only 50%. And now Disney is leaving Netflix, meaning they have even less content. By comparison, Disney+ will be a monster in terms of content.
They commissioned a lot of average shows. They also cancelled niche programmes like 'The Oa' and 'Sense8' and some other lesser know series, who had a big following. The price hike too played a part. However the biggest mistake Netflix made/makes is dropping an entire season in 1 go. The is not a good method for a subscription based company.

Well, I can't speak for anyone else but for me it was several things. 1 - They cancelled a bunch of shows I liked, Daredevil, Punisher, Jessica Jones. 2 - They lost the rights to show internationally (I'm in the UK) my favourite show, The Expanse which is on Amazon now. 3 - Their content of late has been lacklustre, definitely down a notch in quality IMO, a lot of niche shows that are not at all my taste. 4 - The shows I do like, and still exist, seem to take extra long to come up for a second season. Lost in Space and Altered Carbon for example, 2 years to wait for a second season, where as a 'season' used to be one a year. I still enjoy Netflix, but to me, it just feels like it's not as good (for me) as it was two years ago.

My take is that instead of focusing on quality, they focus on quantity, and not every single show can be a homerun, leading to some pretty bad shows over there. They should flip that. They have enough shows, time to start focusing on them being the best they can

So you can see they weren't resting on their laurels. Netflix was fully aware of how original content was the key for long-term survival.

Yup. Someone got paid when they did not mention that Disney pulling the MCU and other content, frees up big bucks for Netflix to replace it with alternate stuff. Also Netflix is GLOBAL and can sell their content EVERYWHERE, and take shows made for the German market and sell it in the US and India. And while Netflix's US subscribers fell in the face of rising prices they still grew GLOBALLY.
Meanwhile Disney is in the process of tanking Star Wars, with really really bad movies.

net flix actually has some great shows. but they should honestly stop releasing it all at once. leads to eventually just "ending" a show and you just auto pilot through it. with time to think about episodes and characters they grow more on you and lead to greater opinions rather than talking about it the day or week after you finish it and moving on.

Disney or Amazon is not the reason for falling numbers of subscribers. People simply are sick of the diversity nonsense that is getting pushed down their throats in entertainment. Some of the shows are simply not entertaining.
Umbrella academy, Jessica Jones and Orange is the New black is not appeal to new subscribers. Shows like house of Cards and Narcos really attracted people to the platform because they did not push any sort of political diversity narrative and if they did it was really not noticed.
The Likes of the Umbrella academy is not going to attract new people to the platform. People are not interested in super heroes with whiny backstories.

Umbrella academy appeals to a section of existing users. It is not going to attract the general public.
The public just want simple entertainment they do not want to be lectured to or to have shows that are pushing certain narratives because those narratives use up entertainment time.
There are only three real streaming platforms and those are Amazon, Hulu and Netflix. And those have been around for some time.
The other options are not really competitors such as Sony or HBO that are more niche streaming services.
Let me bullet point this for you.
Cult like shows do not appeal to the general public.
Shows that spend too much time on Diversity tend to eat up the entertainment space and this then makes the show less entertaining.
And then last of all There are no real competitors to Netflix at this point. And those that do exist have been around for some time.

The real problem is this is their ONLY business. Amazon, Apple, & Disney can absorb the losses because they're also looking to sell you other things.
On paper, yes. In reality, they are profit focused businesses who have to justify everything to stockholders, and provide them with dividends of the profits.
If Amazon Video, Disney+ etc don't turn a profit within a year or two, they will almost certainly be closed down.
James Bennett Amazon video will not close anytime soon even if it does not provide a profit. Just like Amazon the marketplace will not close if they do not provide a profit. And Amazon selling groceries and goods are not the primary source of income. Amazon primary source of income comes from selling cloud storage space for enterprise which every company basically needs these days in a data collecting world. So Amazon can afford to bundle Prime with music and movies and convenient 1 day or 2 day shipping at a constant low price with no worries about profit and customers will keep happy.
Disney on the other hand is hoping that Disney+ will reinvent the way that they get revenue for all the services that they own and also hope to keep their services popular with customers. ESPN has seen numerous employment downsizes in the previous years because it was not profitable and ESPN staying on cable providers is becoming problematic for Disney because its a cash drain and only filling cable providers pockets. Movie releases from Marvel and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars have saved Disney and has position the company to remain profitable for now
The only one on the edge here is Disney. Despite them having the cash now because in the long run Disney will have to tap into another form of revenue like Amazon and like Apple with the App Store and services like Apple Music.

So they are pretty much going to go with a negative balance from Disney+ and fill the gap with the money they get from other sources. Honestly, I feel like it's counter intuitive. I mean, the whole point of Netflix was that it helped stop piracy since everyone could pay a small price for almost all the content. By having only 2 - 3 options it meant that getting everything was pretty cheap, meaning piracy stopped losing it's main point.
Netflix never had "almost all the content". That's why Netflix DVD (and Blu-Ray) by mail still exists, cable TV still exists and new streaming services are starting. Netflix popularized streaming.

Same. Hate what they've done to star wars but Disney is king of content while Netflix (Which I've subscribed to for like 10 years.), has been really hit or miss these last few years. I love Bojack and F is for family but can't see myself spending almost 20$ a month for them when Hulu & Amazon Prime are also giving me content.

End of the day they are multi billion dollar corporations that don't care about us except as a revenue stream and we should (as customers), use that power to demand good content or go elsewhere.

could it be....cancelling shows that people like after 2-3 seasons to replace it with a one season flop? Keeping customers is as important as getting more which Netflix seems to have missed.

Stranger Things has become super boring and I don't really care bout any of the characters. The only good season was season 1
Sket Drives True. There’s no mystery and every season feels like a rehash of Season 1. A monster tries to take over the world, some secondary characters die, the gate is closed, all of the main characters survive, etc.

Imagine they would release their movies in theatres. Ridiculous right?? I mean, every other company basicly does it and most of the time they gain their investment back with some millions in profit just by the box office alone but that's just ridiculous.
They need lowered their expenses as well but they have more competition and fewer people willing to give them a good price on content.

Yeah this is gonna kill Netflix. Its always about the content. If the content is good, people will buy.
Netflix has this problem where content from other companies like movies and tv shows leave every once in a while. So the only reliable stuff you have is Netflix Original movies and tv shows but thats only 50%. And now Disney is leaving Netflix, meaning they have even less content.
By comparison, Disney+ will be a monster in terms of content.
They commissioned a lot of average shows. They also cancelled niche programmes like 'The Oa' and 'Sense8' and some other lesser know series, who had a big following. The price hike too played a part. However the biggest mistake Netflix made/makes is dropping an entire season in 1 go. The is not a good method for a subscription based company.
Tell me if i'm wrong but i think Disney+ will follow the same approach no?

in Australia Netflix is merging with Foxtel also Disney will pretty much be mostly hero or fantasy type shows hopefully netflix survives because all that sort of hero stuff gets a bit much sometimes
I agree, I remember when the world was obsessing with teen novels, Harry Potter, twilight, hunger games...when that died down its this obsession with super heros
Disney also owns national geographic so they will air nature shows, they also own FOX so there will be plenty of non hero/fantasy tv shows added to their list.
Well, I can't speak for anyone else but for me it was several things.
1 - They cancelled a bunch of shows I liked, Daredevil, Punisher, Jessica Jones.
2 - They lost the rights to show internationally (I'm in the UK) my favourite show, The Expanse which is on Amazon now.
3 - Their content of late has been lacklustre, definitely down a notch in quality IMO, a lot of niche shows that are not at all my taste.
4 - The shows I do like, and still exist, seem to take extra long to come up for a second season. Lost in Space and Altered Carbon for example, 2 years to wait for a second season, where as a 'season' used to be one a year.
I still enjoy Netflix, but to me, it just feels like it's not as good (for me) as it was two years ago.
Lost in Space and Altered Carbon: the only shows I've watched on Netflix the last couple of years. Literally. The way things are going with identity politics in entertainment, I expect any new seasons too be underwhelming at best.

Trevor Olague debt does not mean they are not profitable. Almost every major company has debt.
My take is that instead of focusing on quality, they focus on quantity, and not every single show can be a homerun, leading to some pretty bad shows over there. They should flip that. They have enough shows, time to start focusing on them being the best they can
They spent US$ 8 Billion in 2018 for original content. For comparison, Hollywood Box Office Revenues that year was US$ 12 Billion. That's the box office figure for all major studios. So you can see they weren't resting on their laurels.
Netflix was fully aware of how original content was the key for long-term survival.
