    The M25 was not actually designed as a complete orbital road. It is made up of 2 of the 4 ring roads around London that were planned over the years and started but never completed. Construction of one of the ring roads started in 1973 around South Mimms Services and the road was initially given the number M16. Part of this ring road was built and part of another was built and the two were joined together to form the M25.

    Very nice ride- always good to see the motorways of the UK- always have been fascinated by them and find them interesting. Enjoying your trip to the UK and the rides you have taken so far!!!!

    I like the variable speed limit idea. I think Canada should have more of that. BC has just installed them on a short section of the Coquihalla south of Meritt and Highway 1 between Sicamous and Revelstoke.

      yes I noticed that too the last time I drove through the Sicamous/Revelstoke area last year. I like those! :-D

    7:26 not sure if you noticed but the lane markings of different lengths mean different risks, long strips with short gaps means higher risk, while short strips with long gaps means lower risk. You will see the high risk lines near slip roads (exits in Canada) to remind drivers on the outer lanes you may have drivers filtering in on the slip. I believe Montreal uses double whites for this same situation. The part where you almost took the wrong junction has another type of marking to indicate the roads are diverging. Also all the lines are white even for the centre line as opposed to yellow, we have had issues with people from North America thinking our some of our roads are one way and having close calls with the locals.

    next time you come over, try the M8 in central Glasgow: it's the nearest thing we have to an inner-city freeway, and it's not for the faint-hearted (it's got enormously complex junctions, frequent exits and entries on both the nearside and the offside, and all three lanes are usually moving at wildly different speeds)

      Thanks for the advice. I definitely want to come back next summer (depending on finances), and yes one of my goals is go drive around Scotland. I only had enough time to explore England this time (there's so much to do in the UK). I'll put that one on my list of highways for sure! I want to stay longer than 2 weeks if possible next time. The flight from my city (Winnipeg) is a direct flight that takes 8 hours to London, Gatwick. Costs me about $1000 CAD for a round trip ticket. This trip this past July was my first time ever in Europe and leaving North America :-)

      Lived in Glasgow 2008-09 before they completed the last "link" in the M8 now that's finished it feels like a "real" motorway getting in from the airport to around Pollockshields....Glaswegians drive like Edmontonians here erratic speeds on multilple lanes Anthony Henday Drive, Whitemud Dr, Yellowhead Trail ALL rife with timid drivers, speed demons and everyone in between...

    Nice video, Phil! The M25 reminds me of the time I drove an entire loop around the Capital Beltway in Washington, DC, just not as bad. I also accidentally almost took a wrong exit like you did at 2:58 when I was filming in Calgary as the Deerfoot/Stoney split is somewhat confusing. The song choice was also an excellent pick! I've loved that song for years, but never seen it being used in a road video. Guess I was wrong!
    Have a good one!

      haha I know exactly the portion of Stoney Trail you're referring to. I did exactly the same thing before in my video of Stoney Trail at 11 min and 20 seconds. It's for the same reason I almost missed it here in this video. It has to do with when there are not 1, but 2 exit lanes.... it messes with my head sometimes. th-cam.com/video/wyBPe1PUgKE/w-d-xo.htmlm20s

      @highwaysbyways4281 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that one's a bit of a surprise because it's a left hand exit for Deerfoot southbound. Both Stoney Trail and the Henday have some weird exits that can catch you out. They're bad enough for residents, and I bet a lot of visitors have taken exits they haven't meant to.

    Been along this stretch of the M25 a lot back in the late 90's/early 00's as Michael worked at BA HQ and stayed in London on the south side in a flat he used owned by a friend who was overseas. We would drive down from Manchester late Sunday then drive back on either late Thurs or early Fri when he lived in Salford (Manchester's Twin City) back when I visited a lot....Quite the motorway! funny thing is now sections of the Anthony Henday in the SW of Edmonton so remind me of the M25 with our own huge "tailbacks" UK term LOL

    • @TransCanadaPhil
      @TransCanadaPhil  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice job Phill and it has equivalents in the United States Northeast region they are I-495 & I-95 Capital Beltway around Washington I-95 RT-128 I-495 Outerbelt Boston and I-695 Baltimore beltway motorways. If I were you I would listen to your DAB BBC Radio 2 or Radio 1 for M25 traffic queues

    The UK Smart road add or subtract 10 MPH for road conditions in the United States it would be +/- 5 MPH

    200,000 cars a day at some sections and you probably weren't out during the evening rush with all that congestion?! Part of I-270 in West St. Louis County (specifically between I-64 & I-364) is right at 200k AADT, has 8 thru lanes, has significantly more exits inbetween (albeit plentiful auxiliary lanes) and is SMOOTH SAILING just about all the time excluding both rush hours...

    • @TransCanadaPhil

      Schwenda this was recorded around 2pm on a friday.

    • @schwenda3727
      @schwenda3727 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TransCanadaPhil even on a friday at that time it's VERY smooth sailing on the roadway I mentioned... unless someone crashed (which is pretty common almost every friday home rush)...
      With the screwy traffic there, Is it bad drivers in general? Higher semi/lorry volumes? Or is it the MUCH more obvious thing about speed enforcement being top priority above all else... on top of significantly lower speed limits over moderate congestion at best that probably EXACERBATES said problems?

    • @CrazyInWeston

      @@schwenda3727 The thing about the M25 being so busy is because it has TOO MANY JUNCTIONS. This effectively means that the M25 is used as a local road AND a Motorway (Example people using it just to travel ONE junction as its the shortest quickest route). Seriously, I feel that if some junctions were closed and let the local roads handle local traffic, the M25 would be a lot more smooth sailing. HOWEVER today in 2019, These local roads are now above capacity and to force local M25 traffic onto these roads would only make the problem worse on the designated 'local' roads so these junctions stay open and the M25 just suffers. I wish the 'double decker' plan was still an option but make it an expressway only connecting to other Motorway interchanges and none of the local junctions.
      We wouldnt have this if the original 1960's plan was made... FOUR ring road Motorways around London. Instead we got just the one!

    I've always been curious about the vehicles in the UK. I know that everything is reversed, but are the brake and gas pedals also reversed... And what about the clutch? That'd be a major challenge for me, old habits are hard to break. Great video, Phil!

    • @TransCanadaPhil
      @TransCanadaPhil  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kaydrah Communications Wanderlust i was worried about that to before i got to the uk. Fortunatley no, the pedals are not reversed. Also, to make it easier for me I decided to pay the extra money to rent an automatic transmisson (which apparantly isn't common in the uk). I found the hardest thing to get used to use your left hand to manipulate controls on the dash (fans, radio, gps) instead of my right hand. As for driving itself I found that I adjusted right away but as a north american driver what they say is true, you'll tend to hug the left side of the lane too closely (i ended up hitting the rumble strips often). You're just not used to the perspective of having to stay in the right side of a lane instead of the left because of the right side seating position.

      From another left side country (New Zealand) - when I visited the UK obviously it was much easier than me however there were differences like the cars over there have their indictors and windscreen controls on the opposite side from what I'm used to in New Zealand and the use of the imperial signage.
      Funny enough wasn't that hard considering when we went metric - we retained weird measurements like placing exit destination signs on our motorways 400 metres from their exits (the old 1/4 mile signs), no parking within 6 metres of a intersection (based on the old 20 feet rule), etc.

      Seif Adlan probably a mobile device issue, youtube has more restrictive policies regarding music on mobiles for some reason. On a PC it should play fine.

      Lorna Edgar oh, what country are you watching it from? It's possible TH-cam has started blocking it is some countries. 😩 It's probably because it has very mainstream pop songs in it like Sweet Dreams and Hungry Like The Wolf. That's why I try to stick to more non-mainstream EDM stuff, it tends to never be blocked.

      I'm in the UK. Oh well. Thank you. I had a feeling it might be the music. TH-cam is very strict about that.
