@@CassieShakespeare John Lennon got to hear this version in the January of the year he was murdered (December of that year) and yes he did state that this was kind of how he wanted to perform the song, but the music company/film company wanted an upbeat version.

That trumpet was a saxophone 🎷and John Lennon said that this was the definitive version of this song. It no longer belongs to the Beatles. It is Farnham's song now.

John pretty much has the most versatile voice on the planet. He can literally sing anything and it's right in hos wheelhouse. He has had a decades long career with hit songs and albums in 7 consecutive decade since the 60's.
His signature song is You're the Voice. Pick any live version. This concert with the MSO is spectacular buy so are most of his concerts which were all televised back in the 80's 90's and 2000's so there is plenty to choose from. Or even from his time as the Lead singer ofnthe Little River Band of the early to mid 80's or even from his time as a teen pop idol through the 60's and 70's. You will be spoilt for choice.

    • @Jus7aguy

John doesn't have a wheelhouse, unless you take a matchbox, point at it, and say "Everything outside that box is Johns wheelhouse." :)

      @carolynh8866 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@Jus7aguy my point exactly.....everything IS his wheelhouse. If he sings Rock...yep his wheelhouse. Pop...wheelhouse...

This concert was advertised as John and his Big Band in typical Aussie understatement, it's a 100+ piece orchestra for crying out loud. lol
This song is one of the last songs that he would sing at the end of the night after he had already sung his heart out for nearly 3 hours.
Some have pointed out that this particular recording of the concert was closer to 2 hours of actual singing during the TV special, but it was also on the 4th or 5th night that he had sung like this.
Either way, it was one of multiple nights that he did this on January 4-10, 1989, so his voice is still worthy of the accolades.
Not many other singers can belt like that for even 2 or 3 nights without a rest.
And besides picking at the exact details or this exact performance, Farnsey also has a way of getting deep into the emotions of your soul.
A couple of songs worth checking have been mentioned below, plus these are worth a look also.
The reason you haven't heard of him is because the US music industry is a closed little club. When John Farnham went to the US they didn't know which genre to put him in so his US promotions manager got him a couple of gigs in a little jazz club, where the MC introduced him as Jack Phantom. Couldn't even be bothered getting his name correct, so being a bit disheartened he wandered home to concentrate on his loyal fan base. The experience did give him inspiration to write a couple of good songs about missing his family, like this one.
    -Burn For You..
    th-cam.com/video/4PPvOhPspEA/w-d-xo.html
    -Angels..
Notice how he holds the mike below his chest, both mikes are a metre away, which he does all the time to not drown out the other singers.
JF with Lisa Edwards, a top singer in her own right, and one of John's back up singers for 20+ years.
    th-cam.com/video/5_2NJRIdBO8/w-d-xo.html
    -Amazing Grace..
To show the calibre of his other back up Singers, showing you have to be good in your own right, just like Lisa.
This is Vanetta Fields and Lindsey Field.
    th-cam.com/video/_x6N94OEkZQ/w-d-xo.html
    -Please Don't Ask Me..
This one with Olivia Newton John, who we have recently lost. John has also had major cancer surgery including removal of part of his jaw and we may not hear him sing again. So let's enjoy this one as well..
    th-cam.com/video/2uV_tZODfK8/w-d-xo.html
-When Something Is Wrong With My Baby....
And even when he is singing with one of the most powerful voices on the planet, Jimmy Barnes, he still put the mike away from his face and closer to Jonny Diesel on guitar.
    th-cam.com/video/AU_bCchDWF4/w-d-xo.html
    Or this version.
    th-cam.com/video/RAlFHSPLHpo/w-d-xo.html
    -When The War Is Over…
Possibly one of his greatest vocals.
    th-cam.com/video/lfWrXc5eN8g/w-d-xo.html
    -Or is the greatest.
    Gethsemane..
    th-cam.com/video/k5woMZtClhI/w-d-xo.html
    -How about a mike test.
He has the power and ability to distort microphones, amps, and get speaker stacks jumping. So this sort of setting up the venue test is a must. Lol
    Black Dog.
    th-cam.com/video/F2Yi6TVi-sU/w-d-xo.html
Besides having the best voice ever, JF can adjust his tone, pitch, volume, to match the person he is singing with to either match them or sing just under them depending on who's the head line act, he will even back himself down when he is the head line to give others their moment to shine, and if my ears were sensitive enough, I wouldn't be surprised if he could vary his vibrato, timbre and all of those other things that voices can do so he could accentuate the other singers.

He did Led Zeppelin, Black Dog, as a sound check. One of the techies pushed record, so there is no video, but that is mind-blowingly good. He did do it on stage once in Brisbane and it made it onto an album called rarities. Other than that in the concert called, The Main Event, with Anthony Warlow, opera singer, he did Grenada, and with Olivia Newton-John, Please Don't Ask Me, among other memorable things. Anthony and Olivia were back from beating Cancer atthe time. Now John has become cancer free after his diagnosis, just before Olivia, an old friend Passed away, he then had an 11 hour surgery to remove and reconstruct his jaw from mouth cancer. He had some hiccups but is reportedly doing well now. Singing a bit at home, but no word on if he'll be back in his later life stages.

In his heyday he could have ruled music worldwide, but he chose to limit himself so his relationship with his family didn’t suffer. John is also a very, very funny bloke! No wonder we love him so much. ❤ In the last few years, thanks to TH-cam and other social media reactors, John’s music has seen a resurgence and appreciation worldwide. Unfortunately late last year he was diagnosed with cancer of the jaw, he had part of his jaw removed and is still in recovery. John’s version of When The War Is Over in the 2003 The Last Time concert. John is about 54. There’s a bit of chatter before he starts singing, but this is my all-time favourite performance by John. Richard Marx named John the greatest voice alive today. He isn’t wrong. Pick a genre and just listen, from Soul to Opera he is a master. This song was an encore after more than 2 hours of that voice.
The Beatles wrote it but John fixed it. John Lennon told him that was how he wanted to sing it but the truth is they couldn’t and I loved the Beatles. I love the person who says he has had hits for over 7 decades. He is 74 and he was not born singing, he started at 17. He had hit albums in 5 consecutive decades and he is loved. He wasn’t allowed to sing his way until he was 38 or anything he wrote. Try Burn For You live that John co wrote for his wife. Thank you and I love watching people discover John.

Always watch live performances, you get so much more from an artist; they show their true, innate ability. A great duet to watch is with Olivia Newton John singing Please Don't Ask Me from The Main Event Concert, it will pull at your heart strings; it is great theatre. Talking about theatre, watch John's performance of Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar the musical; John has the talent and ability to sing most genres.

John's version really brings out the emotion in the lyrics. Love the Beatles but John's live version here is on 👉.
    Much loved Aussie icon here.❤❤❤

This was 2nd encore after 2/3 hr show. It's Farnham not Fernham.. check out Black Dog by Led Zeppelin cover (will be audio only) was used as a warm up/mic check. YOU"RE THE VOICE, IT'S A LONG WAY TO THE TOP (AC/DC), WHEN THE WAR IS OVER. JUST A FEW TO GET YOU STARTED. When reacting to John, they must be live as his performances are a show in themselves. Just love the Saxophone 🎷

John tried to learn this song on the piano but could only play at this tempo. So he sung it his own way and the rest is history.

You should listen to ‘It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll’, AC/DC cover from the same concert. It’s something to behold!

    Wild thing
    Flame trees
    Jimmys solo career
    Working class man
    Knocking on heavens door
    John Farnham
    Your the voice
    One

Trumpet? I heard a Tenor Saxaphone and John Farnham singing. Suggest you check out : Your the Voice, from the same Concert. You will hear Bag Pipes, but NO Trumpet.

And the funny thing is that no one will ever know if John felt this was one of his better performances. And that says all it needs to say.

Saxophone not trumpet. Check out John Farnham doing Black Dog as a sound check, never released as a single just a sound check and nailed it.
