Connecting ear to ear would have probably worked. I always saved and loaded using the Ear socket on my 48K Spectrum, as it's much louder, and it was far more reliable. The two sockets share a pin on the 48K ULA. It is even possible to load games through the Mic socket - mostly it's less reliable, but for the odd bad copy it can actually help.
I think I made this work as a kid by putting a tape recorder between them, with it recording to an empty tape deck (I'd worked out how the record mechanism worked to fool it into thinking a recordable tape was inserted)
This is because the impedance of the mic and the ear sockets is different. This would work fine if you had a small amplifier in-between the two to match the signal levels.
I won't work due to the levels. The mic output has a range of milivolts and the ear input needs a range of volts. If you put an audio preamplifier between them it will work.
I have a funny feeling the signal going into the LOADing speccy may need some amplification.
A hearing aid for the EAR is certainly needed
Thanks Jim. This is SCIENCE!
@@WhatHoSnorkers no wig required for this one - I already have the crazy hair! And eyebrows actually..

Okay.. but why not? i'm curious now.
@@stevesgaming7475 the output just isnt loud enough from the senders mic socket
