my dad had one of these for 30+ years. i learned to drive stick in it as a kid. he kept it even after he got a new truck as a daily driver. then my mom had it towed to the junk yard and crushed while he was at work, when they got divorced. my mom definitely wouldn't be alive if it weren't for the police dragging him off in handcuffs and the restraining orders.
I love this. The sights are amazing. It is so different from here in the mideast. You guys would love the fall time here if you liked that! A different but equally beautiful experience. The truck is a gem.

im not sure about the older ones, but my '79 has set screw with nut on the gearbox to get some of the slop out of the steering wheel, dont want to adjust it too much or you'll be making constant steering corrections.

It’s such a beautiful place in the fall and I’ve made that drive quite a few times, it was definitely worth the drive! The mini truck did add an element of difficulty for sure!
You could go with a VW diesel swap like an ALH or AHU TDI. The ALH is better but both are good. It does add a lot more electronics in the mix though. They are still lower HP diesels but they can make decent power with simple turbo, injectors and a tune. The ALH from say a 98-02 Jetta makes about 90hp but about 200ftlbs of torque and you can almost double the hp fairly easily with some parts. In all honesty though id like to see a turbo 22r in it though but thats just me.

I used to be from the Chama Area, would go to Pagosa once a month. I saved a grey wrecked 1997 4Runner 2.7 Liter 5 Speed 4x4 from Bobby's Auto Wrecking in Chama. I miss the area dearly.
Chama is such a beautiful town, I’ve really enjoyed every time I’ve visited! We have a purple 97’ 4runner 4x4 with the 2.7 and a 5 speed it’s one of our favorite cars!
Diesel engine.. but look for one thats Original Japanese Stock. and do work on the Shocks the speedometer and the wipers.. lastly install a backing up camera with a cab mounted LCD...that work even when not in backingup mode.

They are but not quite like that, people actually use 20R heads on 22r engines to get higher compression and a little more power! I think that’s why the 20r head from the camper was pulled and is missing
I would put a 22R engine in your lovely Hilux because l have the 22R engine in my Hilux because it came with it and l have no problems cruising at 110 kph which is the maximum speed limit in most of Australia and it quickly gets to 140 kph to pass trucks on the motorways and the speedometer only goes to 160kph and l have done that with the 22R engine and also a definite up grade is thase disc brakes that was on that other Hilux you picked and the small improvements from that donor Hilux you acquired made a difference to the interior
I will for sure be grabbing the disk break conversion! and im up in the air about the best engine, the 22r are indestructible, but I think I want to do something either more modern or diesel, for the benefits that provides!

I pulled the engine and tranny but never got around to messing with it because ive got other projects. Lemme know if you're interested.
Keep it like that, as you got turbo truck and corolla etc. who knows what else is coming... one for the originality and as it is basic Toyota it is reliable as you all just find out! 😆 What a roadtrip!
We shall see, I just want to make it better at adventurous travel, and make it more useful in my life, as is stock it’s not great at anything really, it’s slow, can’t haul, and isn’t super comfortable with the small cab space.

I’ve changed the ATF in the green one once in 45k miles I’ve owned it, it’s got 335k miles on the original transmission too!

Are head upgrades a thing for Toyotas like they are for old Hondas? Will that 18R block accept a 22RE head? 🤔 That’d keep it partially “OE”? 🤷🏻♂️
