You can scratch mar the surface of a steel spoon with a diamond by scratching it. But you can shatter I diamond with that same spoon by hitting it. With minerals hardness and toughness tend to be like the two ends of a sliding scale. Usually the tougher a mineral is, the less hard it is and vice versa.

Asbestos is a material that was...less than thought through. A bacteria that produces limestone and feeds on a specific mineral can't suddenly modify itself to eat humans. Or even make them sick.

Diamonds are frequently used in these applications (as an abrasive coating) due to their hardness not their toughness. These are two different (but related) physical properties. Hardness is the ability of a material to resist surface deformation from an external object. Toughness is the ability of a material to resist self-separation due to an external force (like kinetic shock).
Diamonds while very hard are not very tough. You can scratch mar the surface of a steel spoon with a diamond by scratching it. But you can shatter I diamond with that same spoon by hitting it. With minerals hardness and toughness tend to be like the two ends of a sliding scale. Usually the tougher a mineral is, the less hard it is and vice versa.

The fact that one project was a shame doesn't mean that the entire concept is a waste. In most urban areas, travel space is the second highest percentage of space taken up (after homes). It's a good idea, if we can find the right materials.

Asbestos is a material that was...less than thought through. A bacteria that produces limestone and feeds on a specific mineral can't suddenly modify itself to eat humans. Or even make them sick.
ClayXros That's what I was assuming, but what would the bacteria do if you inhaled/ingested some? Hopefully, were more knowledgeable in the near future than we were back in the first century. It took us until the 1900's to figure out the stuff kills us.

+renee vinolo Pragmatically it would be extremely difficult to coat all the roadways and highways with the material. Even if it were a one time task we would be talking about tons and tons. Its better off being an optional service for commercial and personal vehicles ala snow tires.
