  • Puremix Mentor Andrew Scheps demonstrates EQing a snare drum using Waves plugins. The Scheps73 will help you get a fat punchy drums sound. Watch him using his signature EQ plug-in by Waves: the Scheps73 equalizer. The Scheps 73 can be a real asset when mixing snare eq drum sounds.
    It was modeled after the famous 1073 unit, but with some added features like in/out gain structure modeling and mid/side processing.

    WOW huge statement around about 4 minutes - really paid attention to that - some people like “subtractive” EQ meaning, they take out frequencies they do not like, in the hope that the other frequencies will improve - your approach is the total opposite - I really appreciate a counter view - in both - surely it is what sounds good to you and the client......

    incredible videos, as always. it's so bizarre how all of these subtle dynamics can be misinterpreted as "unnecessary" when putting them into context of the larger mix, however without the stacked subtly of each mic's preampage the difference amounts to a problematic larger mix ... ive done it myself a few times - scratching my head wondering how i could fix it from the other end.
    i think the point is you should never have to fix it at the other end if you approach it this way. as a drummer who plays guitar and has gotten into audio engineering out of necessity, i can assure you that the drummer really appreciates a great mix. considering that drum mixes are never heard the way they were when played, it's really important to create a representation of what the impression is that a drummer creates.
    if the drummer is really really good they will play to the room in such a way that you should need almost nothing to re-present the sounds. but that's only if the drummer is that good and of course context within a mix of other audio is usually the point. i dunno if that makes sense but anyway - thx for the vid.

    firstly if there is difference ,obviously yes! no need of huge amplitude of sound i can hear that difference on my akg's ;
    you just have to carefully see what he is doing and where its affecting and focus that area ,you will surely will able to listen ;
    second people talking about if this is needed or not !, every sound engineer have his own tricks and standards of sound for example what snare drum should sound like ? it various by engineer to engineer ; so calling someone's tricks not important is not a great opinion; if you can't hear it ,that's ok ,practice and try to hear ,
    third if subtle changes do make difference ? sure they do , you won't notice them in early stages but they will make difference at the end !
    regards;
    keep learning , knowledge is never going to get wasted!

    Hi PureMix, what does Scheps mean when he says " phase shift in resonance "? 1:51

    • @anthroparion
      @anthroparion 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mixbustv goes into this with examples - essentially it is a result of filters not being "ideal" or "perfect". They will have a ringing or resonance around the cutover frequency and there is also phase shifting occurring. It will alter the sound, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Linear phase filters try to avoid this, but require more cpu and cause latency. He is just saying he likes the the little extra bump he is getting at around the cutover frequency of 80, with some engineering word salad. Great video though - and over driving that plugin input is excellent for saturation :)

    This is really subjective when it comes to snares.
    So many different styles of music and approaches to mixing that this would or would not work for.
    In some types of music you really can't count on anything in 200hz to be there because the bass instruments are going to be broadly eqed on top of that.
    Likewise, I like a bit of drive myself, but when it is across too many sources it starts to sound like not enough headroom.

  • @michaell.8938
    @michaell.8938 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I preferred the sound of the input at 0, not cranked. When cranked, the snare became blurred. It lost its true character in exchange for a buzzy saturation which did nothing for me. I prefer a cleaner mix than that.

    • @Key_M4ker
      @Key_M4ker 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GrandNebSmada It does a difference, just check the manual:
      Pre-Amp increases the harmonic distortion. Range: -20 to10L (Line), -20 to -80M (Mic) Default: 0 L

      Please note: • Two scales have been modeled - Line scale ranges from -20L to +10L and Mic scale from -20M to -80M. Both scales switch in 5 dB increments. The Line scale will get extension of ‘L’ and the Mic scale ‘M’. • In its default setting the Pre-Amp will not increase gain, just harmonic distortion. The distortion is mild and adds some coloration.

      Drive activates Pre-Amp in drive state. Range: On, Off Default: Off

      Please note: • The Drive control turns the Scheps 73 into a distortion generator. This toggles the plug-in to a state that emulates the insertion of a line level signal into the microphone preamp for distortion effects. When Drive is turned on, the line selections on the Pre-amp are unavailable. When turning on the drive control, the setting will automatically switch to Mic -20.

      • Attention! - in Drive state the Pre-Amp will increase gain, and heavy distortion will be heard.

    Love Andrew, but i have this plugin and the input saturation does literally nothing on its own without the preamp engaged. I encourage anybody to run two of the same track with one phase inverted. the input saturation has no effect without the preamp engaged and both channels will cancel out. and to all those who thought they heard a difference, this is still youtube, where audio is shit.

    • @lektrix3974
      @lektrix3974 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Do you mean the input fader that he turned up, or the preamp gain (without the drive enabled). I'm asking because you're right about the input knob, however considering the preamp harmonics, even without the drive engaged what happens is it adds the harmonics that would be introduced by overdriving the preamp, but without any crushing of the original harmonics, and without the gain increase. If you don't believe me, it clearly stated it in the manual. Also, I tried exactly what you said using the plugin in Logic Pro and there were a lot of high end harmonics present simply because they were added on one of the channels as a result of increasing the preamp knob. Also, after further testing, the input fader does have an effect if the preamp knob is turned to any value above 0. A a massive difference if the drive is preamp drive is engaged!

      +Andrey Benassi might be different for protools/logic/etc, but pan the two tracks hard left and right then sum to mono on master bus and flip phase of left or right, should be a slight difference, not worth writing home about though. I think in the video cause of the 7k boost and 12k shelf there is a lot of upper frequency stuff going on which masks the "subtle" difference.

      +Bobby Arey the point is that a mix should be portable...meaning that it'll sound good when played on any system. The consumer might not tell whether a snare drum sounds good or not but he sure want to feel the beat when listening so EQing and all sound processing is to ensure the key elements of a song (lead vocals, soloist instrument, percussion/drums and bass) can be hear clearly in the mix and the listener can get a good representation of the song whether he is listening through a hifi stereo system or cheap earbuds, and hopefully be moved by the music.

    Not impressed. Even at the end, it still sounded like a biscuit (cookie) tin. That plug-in is far too limited to get a decent, full-bodied sound from a snare, and those frequency selectors are just plain stupid. They may work well enough on the real thing, but on the plug-in they are way too clumsy. It would have made far more sense if Waves had separated them altogether from the eq-level controls.
