His Ipu Heke's always sound amazing. I notice he has big ones with unique patterns carved out on the top. I don't know if that gives them their unique sound.
They are not carved out it’s from Mark pa’i or beating it on the top which has brought him criticism from the traditionalist who believe its disrespectful.
