Never seen any rock musician use an in-ear monitor. If your audio engineer is good, he'll give you a good sound on your normal stage monitor. And if you want to hear yourself, any plug in one ear should so the job. Why do they make it so complicated?
I agree, I was in a band in the early 2000s and played many crappy clubs and I NEVER had decent monitor sound so I learned to wear one earplug onstage and it did the trick. I could hear my own voice at least.
it's necessary for larger venues because of how sound bounces around; it's advantageous to have an isolated mix in your ears... she was just being a brat about the whole thing.
