    For the AR platform I chose 6.5 Grendel as compared to 224V. Has Decent effective range to learn long distance shooting (new sport to me) and good for hunting. Thanks for the Content!

    Thanks for the channel John, love the info and reviews provided. I shoot 6.5 cm myself and love the results. I hand load and absolutely love the diversity of the cartridge. I'm and avid hunter and load 95 gr v max for coyotes, 120 barns lead free for deer, and just got back from my first elk hunt ever and was lucky enough to harvest a 5x5. 143 ELD-X hand loads. 180 yrds into the lungs, and in about 15 ft jumped over the bank and slid to a stop. Have been successful with every load mentioned and love that I can have one rifle for everything I hunt. Very very important to me.

    I'm a cult follower of the 7mm-08. Given the 162 ELD-M vs the 308 168 SMK, the 7mm gets about 50% greater effective range, bucks the wind better, and longer lasting barrel than the 6.5C. I have, load, and shoot all three... but my 7-08 is the one I find myself grabbing the most. Of course, I'm a lover of the .41 magnum as well.....

      Don Thursby what does “smoke” mean? 7mm-08 is excellent, but the 6.5 is so close in every relevant way that there’s nothing about one or that “smokes” the other. The 147 ELD has better BC than the 162 ELD.

    Why use 224v over 22-250? If you get a faster twist barrel to shoot heavier bullets it should in theory beat out the 224v with more case capacity it will be able to push bullets faster. So I see no point in shooting 224v over 22-250 with a fast twist barrel. Thanks love the show keep up the good work!

    Why not have both? ;) Picking up a LMT AR10 type gas gun in 6.5CM in a few days. Barrel swaps to 308 in minutes. Perhaps not quite as accurate as a bolt gun... but... I am going to test it and see what it can do in the next 30 days or so!

    The AR type rifles for many years, I wanted nothing to do with them (Vietnam ), the cartridge after training with the M-14 308 Winchester the 5.56mm too small. But in 2015, everything changed when I purchased my first AR-15 rifle, bitten real bad. I wanted something more than the 5.56mm so I built an AR-15 in 6.5 Grendel...then an AR-10 6.5 Creedmoor, and yes, I did build AR’s in 5.56mm, but I didn't stop there, I'm watching TH-cam and a guy has bolt action AR-10 in 6.5 CM...pull the pins and change the semi-auto part for the bolt action. They are my go-to guns all the time for FUN shooting. Ruger has a 6.5 Grendel in bolt action rifle, I will if it is the next buying gun.

    .224 Valkyrie is a good competition round or varmint round but does not have the terminal ballistics for hunting ethically in my opinion. It is also illegal in many states to hunt game with a .22 caliber round regardless of the case size behind it. For me, I prefer a 6.5 Grendel in an AR15 platform. It will take game both legally and ethically as well as reach out to 1200. I'm still using. 308 for my bolt gun though.

  • @longsnipz
    @longsnipz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not understanding the shorter barrel life with 6.5 creedmore... compared to what? I understand higher FPS calibers burn barrels fast but 6.5 creedmore is usually between 2760fps and 2900fps on hotter loads.... 3000fps and faster are normally your barrel burners...

Benchrest rifle 0.2518" first place - last 0.4858...Factory rifle shooters "consistently" at that shoot ranged from 0.5102-1.5098" ...those are "consistent" accuracy averages. I am certain you have several "billfold" groups cut out of when the stars aligned but give us a break. I spend a lot of time prepping quality Lapua brass. Use a mandrel and have consistent run out averaging .001-.002”. Too bad I can’t post my load developement Targets and some in my dope book. Really don’t care what You think or your BS flag waiving. In good conditions .25” is simple if you did your homework and developement good load techniques. I doubt there is much difference in either in terminal ballistics on people. One just shoots a bit flatter at distance due to better BC. Anyone who takes a hit to center mass with a 7.62x51/.308 probably aint gonna be long for this earth from what I have seen in combat. I am sure the same holds true for the 6.5 CM.

    Great chat man, I have a true bolt action AR15 upper chambered in 224 Valkyrie. All the benefits of the AR15 aftermarket and weight and size of the platform but with a 3 lug precision built action. The company who makes it is Uintah Precision. It’s an upper so pop two pins and you’re back to any semi auto. I also have the AR10 version in 6.5 Creedmoor. The Valkyrie has been really fun to shoot, low recoil and low cost of ammo but capable of 1,300 yard shooting which I have done. I just tested the 95 Sierra with my 1:7 twist and it shot three groups with three different charges of RL17 at less than an inch loaded to mag length without any development. I highly suggest trying one out. Great fun and my wife enjoys shooting the Valkyrie too

    I don’t see a place for the 224 Valkyrie in a bolt rifle because it doesn’t offer anything that does already exist in either 223 or 22-250. For non reloaders the ammo availability kills the 224. Just my $.02

    • @NickFrom1228
      @NickFrom1228 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Precisely. You get a 22-250 with adequate twist and you don't see much difference. Valkyrie is an AR only option to extend range if you insist on a .224 caliber.

    7mm08 for most hunting and 7mag for anything bigger than a deer. Better BC than 6.5 Creedmoor and a bigger hole. 7mm08 is also easier to get to sub-sonic. Nothing wrong with 6.5 creed, I have 3 differant rifles in 6.5 creed. 284 Winny is awful hard to beat a well. Just my two cents from a seasoned hunter and long range paper puncher. I love 6mm Creedmoor, but I don't recommend it unless you reload, or if you custom build one with the chamber you need to shoot a given factory round. 6.5mm Creedmoor is pretty much stable in terms of chamber / reamer variants (or lack thereof) and twist rates, and should be the go to chambering now.

    I’ve not really jumped on the “new cartridge” bandwagon. My long(er/ish) range setups all use either .223/5.56, .308/7.62x51 or 7mm RM. This keeps my inventory standardized, simple and based on well-established, commonly available cartridges I SHOULD be able to always find. I’ve got my DOPE, data tables and calculations for each rifle/load combination I typically run and have verified them under many different conditions. I’m sure my .308’s will be out-shot by a competent shooter with a 6.5 Creedmoor but I generally hold my own against any fair weather or weekend/recreational shooters with fancy caliber guns but limited skill (this is especially true when shooting on the “unknown distance” range or out-of-position). I’d rather be a capable shooter with a mediocre gun/cartridge than a mediocre shooter with a capable gun/cartridge and I just don’t have the money or the time to develop all the data and calculations for each trendy new cartridge that someone in marketing decides to roll out.

    And boom just like that your channel gets blocked from my feed! I’m over you blowing up that pos need more as anything but needmore. It needs more velocity thus more case capacity. It needs way more to make it an effective hunting round. It has nothing on a 260 Rem that’s been around for 40 years or so already. It can’t beat a 25-06/out to 500 yards with conventional bullets and now they are making 135 grain high BC bullets for the 25 your need more will never be better than the 25. And I consider it on the small side of capable rounds. I have so many calibers in my safe that will kill game effectively and humanly. And I do know what a real pos it really is. You need more guys are wounding more game that gets away than any thing else I’ve ever heard of. So don’t try contacting me or arguing. 6.5 Creedmoor seems to be more accurate and definitely has less recoil than a .308. The .308 definitely is a better cartridge if shooting a very large buck or larger game. I don't like recoil and they are both favorites. If deer hunting, I could be using either one, but I would prefer to have the .308 on the larger deer or bigger. I hate having to trail deer. The military wants a 6.8 mm bullet, but they want it to be moving at 3500 fps. They want something that's (as far as I can tell) impossible. But mostly, they are not looking at the 6.8 SPC II. If you want high performance, and something other than 5.56, get a Grendel.

    AR-15: 6.5 Grendel Type 2 - lightweight, energy like a (.308) with better ballistics. Can hunt with it in any State. Ammo is generally cheaper than (.308) of same brand and line. Hornady 123gr SST gives the best 100 yards groups followed by PPU 120gr HPBT, then the Hornady Black out for my 18" 1:8 barrel.
    AR-10: (.308)-Groups better than my nearly identically built 6.5 Creedmoor at 100 yards using ammo of the same brand and line. Gas gun "Plinking" and hunting ammo is of a much wider and cheaper variety. Freedommunition remanufactured 155gr HPBT and 150gr FMJ run well and is capable of 1 MOA groups. Winchester 150gr Deer Season XP gets the best groups at 100 yards (sub MOA). The only 6.5 Creedmoor ammo I tried with it is the 125gr Winchester Deer Season XP and the Hornady 143gr ELD-X because those were the only offerings I could find below $30/box at the time (neither sub MOA; 1.0 -1.25 MOA). The 6.5 Creedmoor has a high 'floor' price wise which is steadily lowering.
    Bolt Action "Precision": 6.5 Creedmoor - 6.5 Creedmoor ammo made for "precision" shooting I found to be cheaper than (.308) of the same brand and line (Hornady SST, ELD-X, ELD-M, others) because I guess it takes so much to get a (.308) anywhere near the performance of a 6.5 Creedmoor beyond 500 yards.
    Bolt Action "Hunting": (.308) although (.308) can cost more in the 'precision world, no other caliber has the variety of hunting bullets[ in grains] and the price 'floor' of the (.308). The Ruger American Standard shoots Remington Core-Lokt 150gr PSP very well.

    In regard to the .224 Valkyrie, I'd imagine the .223 WSSM resoundingly trumps it and the closely related chamberings in terms of case capacity, along with being a little friendlier to bolt action applications. I'd be concerned about the bolt head for a semi-auto but I am surprised the .223 WSSM AR-15 hasn't taken off in more restricted states. Whilst talking about the WSSM chamberings, there's also the .243 WSSM which is also available (Olympic Arms is the most notable manufacturer that comes to mind) and has been for quite some time yet I can't recall quite the same amount of hype that the .224 Valkyrie, 6.5 Grendel, .22 Nosler, 6.8 SPC, 6 Creedmoor, or 6.5 Creedmoor has had.
    Question for #MailCallMonday:
    There have been some people asking in the comments of this video (th-cam.com/video/gzdVHnLaD-E/w-d-xo.html) when the full review will be coming for the 3-9x40 Leupold VX-R Patrol. I'm working on getting a Mk.12 Mod.0 put together, and while a 3-9x36 Mark 4 MR/T would be prefered, I understand that they aren't so easy to come across as compared to the newer offerings from Leupold and Nightforce. So, what would your opinion be, along with the pros/cons, between the 3-9x40 VX-R Patrol and the 2.5-10x42 NXS? What are the benefits of a SFP in that magnification over a FFP?

    I enjoy target shooting, but generally use my rifles for hunting. First few rifles were a 270win, 30-06 then a 308. Bought a tikka ctr in 6.5...it's definitely my favorite. What a sweet shooter! It definitely makes me want to shoot more. And factory ammo is affordable(although the shelves got hit HARD this hunting season for 6.5...can't blame them). I'll be taking it with me into the woods this weekend for it's first hunting season. Looking forward to the results. Going to be testing hornady interlocks, bosler ballistic tips, and Hornady eld-x on whitetail(4 doe tags plus a buck tag). Curious to see how they do

    Hey John, finished my 224 build a few weeks ago. I went with a 1/6.5"twist 22"wilson combat barrel and jp internals. Only factory ammo I have shot was fusion and it grouped them horribly. I bought 200 rounds of once fired brass from a known source that shot all rounds with his daughters rifle. I turned the necks and everything else I could imagine worked a ladder test up to 27 gr of 414 and topped them with 95 gr smk. They progressivly got tighter and tight till I got to my Max loads. 1/3" is where it shoots, I had many more tunning issues than normal however now have it cycling reliably after going to small base dies. Looking fwd to running it at a few matches. It's a great shooter.

    Great Vid Bro'. My "Go-To" rifle caliber for me is still the 308 Winchester. But then again, I am more of a hunter than a Competitive Shooter, that appreciates the ability to reach out there and shoot some tight groups at 600-800 yards to "see if I still got it". If I wouldnt have been prior military (Ret.) where I had access to tons of 7.62x51 Brass (literally), Id probably go 6.5 CM as well. To me it came down to economy, practicality and performance, not specifically in that order.

    I have a 224 Valkyrie , craddock , bartlein barrel. It shoots great but when the barrels that long it no longer feels like an AR, I may go back to .223, plus it's scary I don't see many people having good luck w Valkyrie hand loads. It makes me think theirs some inherent flaw, like others. Getting a good load w 6.5 creedmoor is easy, why so many issues w Valkyrie. I have no interest in the BA Valkyrie either.

  • @PhilMadewell
    @PhilMadewell 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think a 224 Valkyrie in a PRS platform could be very interesting. You can run a lighter Barrel and lighter overall weapon system, and not have to worry so much about overheating. One of the vented carbon fiber barrels could be really neat there. Also it's got a nice short powder column which makes for more consistent burn, and I'm pretty sure you can run it in one of the many style actions such as the one that howa is producing! Having a rifle that was a couple pounds lighter on a day of PRS match shooting could really make a difference in fatigue in the final stages. And that said, there's no one saying you can't run in the gas gun open division! Then you kind of get to have your cake and eat it too

    Lots of people own .223 and .22-250 bolt rifles for target and varmint and small game hunting, so I don't see why the .224 Valkyrie wouln't flourish in the bolt rifle world since it outperforms both.

    My preference is 308 for few reasons, long barrel life, I would even say you buy a 308 for life, cheap and great variety of ammunitions that you can find anywhere, and no recall. You can do it all with a 308 and if you reload you get a ton of different brass and bullets. To sum it up, versatility, reliability, avaibility , durability and cost.

  • @tinncan

    224V looks neat, but only in a semi auto platform, but brass is bolt gun loading expensive and fragile. Maybe it will lead to more fast twist 22-250 barrels being produced.

    • @sub_second_life3174
      @sub_second_life3174 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So many factors...you can burn any barrel out with high round counts but speed and rate of fire are two major factors. Bottom line is don’t heat up your barrel to extremes temperatures and don’t shoot high velocity ammo... shoot match grade ammo only because it’s almost always slower by 200-300 FPS.

      Troy Byrd round count is different from barrel to barrel. It doesn’t matter. Some people will get 2k some people will get 3k. As I said before it’s many factors. It’s not always the caliber trust me. People speak of many things they know very little of... a 243 Winchester is a great caliber but that caliber is known to be a barrel burner because it shoots small bullets very very fast. Anything over 2700 FPS will burn up any barrel. Just don’t shoot fast and stay in the shade when possible. 6.5 creedmoor is very fairly priced at $1.20-$1.50 for quality match grade ammo and it is a 1k yard laser beam all day

That said, in heavy brush like we have here in Louisiana, I have a Marlin .45/70G that handles anything inside 200 yards effortlessly, though it kicks like two mules. And you never know when you're going to have to contend with a rhino. :P

When was the last time you saw 7mm-08 on the selves for sale at your local gun shop or sporting goods store? The 6.5 Creedmoor is readily available just about anywhere. The 6.5 CM has plenty of knockdown power and high BC at most yardage. Choose wisely.

    Im a 6.5 cm guy myself, but really enjoy .308 as well. Only problem i see is people overlook 6.5cm limitations going from paper to the hunting realm....it does so well at long ranges newbies dont take into account the loss of energy when trying to go the distance on a hunt. This is not an elk gun guys, yes you may have success at shorter distance, but even then there are much better choices for that energy dump into the animal. Deer and like size animals or smaller, the 6.5cm with right bullet type is devastating. So in otherwords, 6.5 is well rounded as long as you understand YOUR applications of use. Btw im a target shooter, plinker, and hunter as you mentioned and agree with all you mentioned.

      I'm a 6.5cm fan, but I do understand the limitations of the cartridge, how ever I just returned from my first elk hunt and was lucky enough to harvest a elk in my first season out. ( OTC DIY public land hunt) i argue that if your more familiar and comfortable with your cartridge and rifle take what you already have. I was so much more confident having my rifle that I've shot 3000s + rounds through then a so called elk friendly cartridge, and having to make a 550 yard shot with said other caliber. Confidence and shot placement make for a more successful hunt 95% of the time in my opinion. I was lucky enough to only shoot a standing 180 shot with my hand loaded 143 ELD-X 6.5 CM. destroyed his lungs, and walked 15feet jumped over a bank and slid to a halt 50 yards down the mountain. Bullet dumped good energy and found chunks of his lungs in his throat. Know your limits, fallow ethics and get as close as you can no matter the cartridge.
