    Fun hunt. A few years ago, I found a silver thimble and a gold cap in a pile of trash. The shell pile is unreal. Thank you for all you do to bring us along.

    Hey! When I was a kid in the late 50's early 60's we lived in Delaware and would go to my aunt and uncle's place in Maryland, I think near Salsbury? Not sure. But as kids, we all played and collected buttons that were the material that made up their driveway. I mean thousands of them. Thier driveway could fix 3 cars at least. All paved with buttons. And back then, I don't think they were made from plastic, maybe some type of shell? I asked my uncle how they got them, and he said they were rejects from the button factory and they would sell them to folks for whatever reason. Every hear of this??? Just one of those childhood memories that stick in one's mind. A driveway made of buttons!

    Oyster shells by themselves work great for a septic drain field in place of stone.. Clam shells d not as they can nest and not allow water to flow through as well.

  • @calliecooke1817
    @calliecooke1817 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Chig, they say when John Smith explored the Chesapeake, he picked good settlement places, in part, by the oyster shell piles. I've been told there where 30' tall piles until the early 20th century. All gone now. They made cement out of them. Old Baltimore, D.C., and Annapolis were all built, supposedly, with oyster shell mortar. Peace.

  • @clamsoup

    I think shells repel slugs..... Mary Contrary story tells how the garden grows.

  • @Katelittlewolf
    @Katelittlewolf ปีที่แล้ว

    well i think they use the shells to build up the soil. I have seen shells used as part of an organic soil base in organic garden beds on the coast.

    Wow! I wonder if someone was into fisty cuffs and lost their tooth that way. 🤔
    I remember when Dad used to buy oyster shells for the chickens, but not like that pile! 😳

    The brass piece could it possibly b part of a pick set so the soldiers had a way to clear the breach plug if they had to a lot of times they were attached with a small chain idk just a guess tho

  • @rickyb2200

    Interesting finds , I've heard at one time the farmers would crush up the shells and spread it out over fields they say it adds calcium and something I can't remember into the soil .

    • @aquachigger
      @aquachigger  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've heard that, but on this farm they are putting them on the roads.

    • @rickyb2200
      @rickyb2200 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @adamlyon5231

      Calcium would raise the pH of the soil and make other nutrients available for plant uptake.

    Those oyster shells are ground up & given to chickens to strengthen egg shell at laying so chicken don't die.

  • @AndrexT
    @AndrexT ปีที่แล้ว

    The crumbly thing looks like a two piece tarp grommet. Shells can also be ground up and added to the soil. It provides calcium and in tomato crops, prevents Blossom End Rot.

    There's a town in southern N.J., called Bivalve, where
    they harvested shellfish, Oysters etc.
    I visited it years ago and they had piles of shucked oysters and
    they Reeked.!!!!!
    It was so bad the my car tires still smelled horrible a week later.
    Aren't you lucky that the shell pile wasn't fresh... yikes!
    There is a midden or shell mound on the tidal flats near Little Egg Harbor , Tuckerton, N.J.
    It is the largest in the North Atlantic and was the result of many, many years of Oyster and Quahog foraging by Native Americans like the Leni Lenape .
    At one time it was estimated to have been at least 20 or 30 feet high and there is still 2 to 4 feet below the present water/marsh line.
    100 feet long, 15 to 20 feet wide and presently 12 feet above the marsh.
    Cheers,
    Rik Spector
