This video reminds me of the time my local Czech friend and I were downtown and stopped by an Irish style pup for a guinness. We started talking to a German tourist there and he told us how surprised he was that the alcohol wasnt cheap in Prague. We had to explain to him, that he needed to get out of these tourist trap places in the center. Its a shame, because I live in Prague 1 and there are some good places. Your honest videos kinda describe my experience in Prague. I was there before I saw your channel, like 5 years ago or more. I got a few sub-optimal experiences in several places, but I'm thinking of visiting again early this summer. Ahah, enjoy Prague and if you´ll stay for more than 3 day, visit local gems like Kutná Hora, Litoměřice, Karlovy Vary and Český Krumlov. If these are too far for one day trips, there are nice cities around Prague as well like Poděbrady (small spa town) or Mělník (town with a chateau on a hil above the confluence of two largest rivers).
One correction: while pilsner (lager) is indeed the traditional and most widespread type of beer here, a lot of local breweries making ales have been popping up here recently, too. (An ale is easier to brew than a lager, apparently, so if a new microbrewery opens, chances are they are going to start with ales.) And by recently, I mean like two decades or so.
The introduction to this episode reminded me how important what you do here is for tourists. I've been to Prague once, during the Christmas market, and aside from the beautiful landmarks, I was quite disgusted by everything else. A mediocre restaurant that charged me extra for dry bread served as an appetizer, which I couldn't refuse, and similar stories left me disenchanted with Prague for a long time, until I discovered this channel and realized that I had become a typical victim of scammers and that exploring Prague could be a much better and more enjoyable experience. Thank you for that.
I think when the article writer says “from Austria to Slovakia” they mean “from A to S” since there isn’t a country starting with Z. Not geographically but in alphabetical order!
£11 for a beer is in a Tourist trap bar in a square in the middle of prague So don't go into a Tourist trap Bar, Do a small bit of research before you go. went to Prague im November Did not pay more than £3 = 89 kck= €3.30.

3:18 "There's not a single local in the square!" Maybe that's becaue Janek is scaring them away with yelling 😛 Bonus Czech word: "hlasitý" (meaning "loud") 🗣
I've been to Prague many many years ago. But if I for some reason would end up there in future, I think the must see attraction is Honest Guide for sure! :D
actually had a beer and some food at one of those touristy joints near the clock tower in old town square and wasn't ripped off! I want to say it was like under $8 US for a liter. So yeah, more than a more locals type joint that we went to later that night, but we were fine since we knew we were paying a bit more for location and atmosphere.
Problem is that journalists are usually paid per article, creating an incentive to spam content rather than doing journalism. It’s not like they’re happy doing so.
I didn't know pilsner beer got its name from you guys. It's also really common over here in the Netherlands, we call it a "pilsje", though a lot of people use the term interchangeably with "bier".
Went to Prague for the Christmas markets a few years ago watched r videos for 6 months before we went and came with a list of things to do. Like wandering down certain hidden tunnels to find a cute restaurant. I wandered around ALOT by myself and felt safe because u helped where to go and what not to do. Thank you
Hi J&H Honest Guides! In Jan ‘24, I was at Petřín tower and stopped at the glass-fronted place next to it called Petite Eiffel for a beer and got a Pilsner Urquell for CZK24, which was 80p! The cheapest I have ever found in Prague! I was very pleased 😊 Maybe it was that cheap due to the season and location? CZK24 was also written on the blackboard that they had pitched outside the main door. A nice cheap pilsner for those who make the funicular journey to see the view up at Petřín, and perhaps something worth stopping for after the viewpoint. Afterward, I went to Strahov Monestary Brewery. It was a wonderful day.
I never trust those top 10 articles online, because it's all from people who have little to no experience actually visiting/doing the things they write about and it's over hyped or completely false information.
As someone that drove from Scandinavia to the Balkans. I am glad Prague is finally getting a ring road... Driving through downtown Prague is such a hassle, after you have driven on highways till now..
I've been to Prague, and it's amazing! If you stay away from the Old Square. Sure, go and see it, it's lovely, but when it comes to beer, just go somewhere else. There are so many lovely pubs! Try them, support the small pubs!
You'd think that publishers would ask if someone went visited a place before they submitted and posted the article on said place. But they gotta get those clicks.
Not Prague I know, a few years ago we visited Pilsen and bought a half litre of Urquell for 35 Czech koruna, at the time was about £1.10. I think it was a place near the Skoda factory.
A year ago I got beer for 57 Kč, like €2.3 but when my dad came to visit me in Prague at some point as he needed to rest he decided to sit in one of those places in the Old Town Square and paid 125 Kč if ai remember correctly, like €5. It was a year ago and beer price apparently increased but if you don’t go in tourist places you can find decent prices.
"A modern metropolis with medieval roots" - I can add one city to the list, the 1st that came to my mind actually - Tallinn, Estonia 😄 Though it may not be big enough to warrant "metropolis", but it certainly has medieval roots or actually even very medieval look *today* (in Old Town). Anyway, "Europe booziest city with cheap beer" admittedly sounds great for us from Nordic countries, but I fully realize it's not the truth ;) Na zdraví!!
Just came back from trip across multiple cities in Austria and right away compared it to my trip to Czech Republic and how much easier (and cheaper and better) latter was thanks to your clips! I did my best in Austria to avoid such top10, best sites to visit recommendations but still failed to avoid tourist traps / bad experiences altogether. As you say nowadays many sites do buy articles, reviews and you almost have to believe reddit more than google reviews in some cases / cities. Thanks again for the job well done and hope you will continue covering not only Prague but also other cities in detail - loved your suggestions in Liberec and visited also Kutna Hora just because your video from way back when. 🙌
Walter's World is a good channel, where the guy seems to live traveling with his family for decades. All of his videos are from the city he's talking about. And he keeps returning to the same place some 3, 4, 5 times... I'd trust his suggestions.
Pilsner is a type of lager made in Plzeň (Pilsen). It's hoppier than most of the other lagers. Lagers are botton fermented beers while ales are top fermented beers.
First, I had to laugh at the end... with your accent, saying "politician" sounded like "pole-a-tician" and you were talking about Polegate haha! Anyway... none of those articles would remotely get me interested in visiting Prague. What HAS intrigued me is you talking so passionately and honestly about your city! I would go for the history, architecture, and the chance of meeting you yelling in the square! Haha! Who decides to travel to a European country (even from as close as the UK) because they have cheap beer? Maybe there are a few people... but no one from the US is going to do that. Thanks for keeping it real, Honest Guide!
Cheapest Beer I have ever had in Prague was in 2015 when exchange was almost 39CZK to 1GBP. There were some bars where you could get a half litre for just under £1 Flights wise cheapest I have ever had return was £90 Not now though , prices have gone through the roof. Still cheaper than the UK though for Staropramen local uk bar has it on tap for £5.30 In prague about £2.30
I did go to the Christmas market in the Old Square. I loved it! We also stopped at a couple markets in Germany. Prague was my favorite (and we are going to go back for a longer stay in two years).

I remember buying a 500ml beer (or 5) in Praha 2 (CIRCA 1995) for 12.5 crowns (exchange rate was about 24 to the $), but at the old town square it was 70 crowns.
Remember, there is virtually no money spent on journalism or journalists in the US. Some hapless graduate student was told, "we need a top 10 article. You have 20 minutes." Also, you should be impressed that this article on European xmas markets managed to include the correct names of two European countries.
Obviously I don't know the specifics about this Prague project, but architecture competitions should generally not be confused with a final decision on what building is going to be build, at least not in the sense of "project A won, thus project A will be build". Often enough it's a different project that ultimately gets build, after adjustment. These competitions are held because it's a lot of work to design such a building. That costs money, and even if your building isn't being build, you want something out of it - thus there's competitions, and the top10 or so receive money and recognition, just like a sports competition really. But after that, the design will be further refined, elements from different proposal combined, adapted, further judged for practicality or changed requirements etc.
Let's just use AI to report on what one might have done in Prague...(I let it summarize in 2 paragraphs, and it's not written in the 1st person perspective) While in Prague, one of the best things you might encounter is the magical atmosphere of the historic Old Town Square. Surrounded by stunning architecture, charming cafes, street performers, and the iconic Astronomical Clock, this square is a must-visit spot that captures the essence of Prague's beauty and charm. Another highlight in Prague is exploring the majestic Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral. The castle complex offers breathtaking views of the city and houses historical treasures, while the cathedral's Gothic architecture and intricate details are sure to leave you in awe. A visit to Prague Castle provides a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of this enchanting city.

1. Maybe the "Austria to Slovakia" was in alphabetical order, not geographical? 2. Perhaps the interview with the Mayor took place before the selection and announcement? 3. Definition, British: "Ale" --> beer 4. There's a big difference between "CAN GET" and "WILL GET" a beer for less than 2,60. Even you pointed out that the "average price is 2,30, so what's the lower price that's keeping the average from being higher? 5. Besides, it looks like the additional space came after the post, since the pole was painted with the sign brackets in place.
I have been in the Old Town Square Christmas Market with my Czech daughter-in-law pushing my Czech grandson in a buggy. Forgot my gloves and by the time I was in the square the temperature had dropped to -9°C. I managed to find a stall with gloves and had trouble handing over the money for them because my hands wouldn't work because they were so cold. So more locals, even if just passing through.
I wentp prague in oct 2023. Although my wife and I usually go to the most local places and followed ypur suggestions, we never found a pint of beer under 2. Half liter was about 4 and up or so in some places. You are right honest guy!!
About the mayor's comment isn't it possible that at the time of the interview that was the case but at the time of publishing the winner was already selected?
£2.30 for a lager is about half the price in the UK (certainly my bit of the UK, it's probably a bit better up north), so that still sounds pretty good to your average British drinker. Mind you £11 is practically night-club prices. I expect to pay basically a fiver these days.
I honestly don’t understand why people even visit Prague anymore. It’s no longer a real city, there are only tourists in the pretty city center. Locals, understandably frustrated, won’t even try to act friendly. They can no longer afford to live there because every apartment has been turned into an Airbnb. Everywhere you turn, there’s a sea of people, diluting any sense of genuine atmosphere. It’s like you’re at Disneyland. Nothing is authentic, every shop has been designed for tourists and there are so many tourist traps and scams. Whenever you exit a subway there are guys targeting tourists to check whether you didn’t forget to validate your ticket (and give you a fine). And because of the articles mentioned in this video (cheap booze etc) the type of tourist that visits Prague is also the worst. Amsterdam has this same problem (but at least they’re actively trying to change their image). There are much nicer places to go to than Prague
Well Prague is like 50/50 locals and tourists .... But any capital city is just bad , other cities with much less tourist are without scams and are really cheap.. But you will have trouble with language
One ring road to rule them all, one ring road to find them, One ring road to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them; In the Land of Prague where the Honest Guide resides.
The worst thing is that the whole Highway network of Bohemia is designed exactly that way. All, roads lead to Prague. One would expect them to at least build direct Class I road between D8 and D11.
I think they probably used the phrase "from Austria to Slovakia" in the alphabetical context...as in "from A to Z". Most Americans can't find either of those countries on a map, so assuming the USA Today readers would NOT think of the phrase in terms of Geography is a pretty safe bet.
I am from France and Thailand. Every time an article is written about my countries, it’s always cringeworthy, especially the travel articles and those TH-cam travel videos. I literally feel second-hand embarrassment when they describe my city, and you can tell that they don’t have a clue-it just feels like a paid advertisement.
3:18 Poor girl freaked out😂
every city in Europe has medieval roots.
11 quid is outrageous!!
Ring roads are great when you want to avoid visiting a city and want to pass it. Thanx Mr. Mayor for pointing this out.
£11 for a beer is in a Tourist trap bar in a square in the middle of prague
So don't go into a Tourist trap Bar, Do a small bit of research before you go. went to Prague im November Did not pay more than £3 = 89 kck= €3.30.
The Honest Guides do it again, well done on another great video. Because of you guys I visited Prague for the first time last September.
This September I will be coming back with my wife and two friendS from Seattle, USA. P.S. no one reads USA Today anymore.
Keep up your good work.
That's a long flight.
Skip Prague and go to Budapest instead. Way better.
@@bradwaghorn8955. Going to Budapest and Vienna too, thank you for your suggestion.
Nobody reads any newspaper
3:18 "There's not a single local in the square!" Maybe that's becaue Janek is scaring them away with yelling 😛 Bonus Czech word: "hlasitý" (meaning "loud") 🗣
Sometimes 'ale' is used in English to mean beer in general. I think most people from North West England would agree, but fair points otherwise.
I never imagined a YT channel like this existed and now I'm interested in further honest guides ☺
Love your videos, and even though I'm English and live in Liberec, each time we visit Prague, we go to Špejle after your recommendation.
Thank you.
I've been to Prague many many years ago. But if I for some reason would end up there in future, I think the must see attraction is Honest Guide for sure! :D
The woman looking at you and leaving when you shouted there was not a single local xD
actually had a beer and some food at one of those touristy joints near the clock tower in old town square and wasn't ripped off!
If you are a freelance journalist yes, but not if you are a salaried, full-time employee.
@@ndjk2821 I hope you are right in most cases. Salaried friends of mine unfortunately do face pressure to publish X amount of articles.
You are doing a great service to us all by truly being honest !!!!!! THANK YOU !!!!
I didn't know pilsner beer got its name from you guys. It's also really common over here in the Netherlands, we call it a "pilsje", though a lot of people use the term interchangeably with "bier".
The Austria to Slovakia thing is about alphabetical order, not geographical locations. Most Americans are confused with geography.
most americans are confused by the austia/australia and slovakia/slovenia/czechoslovakia.
I was very pleased 😊
Maybe it was that cheap due to the season and location? CZK24 was also written on the blackboard that they had pitched outside the main door.
A nice cheap pilsner for those who make the funicular journey to see the view up at Petřín, and perhaps something worth stopping for after the viewpoint. Afterward, I went to Strahov Monestary Brewery. It was a wonderful day.
I never trust those top 10 articles online, because it's all from people who have little to no experience actually visiting/doing the things they write about and it's over hyped or completely false information.
You should do a video on Best Christmas Markets in Prague and Czechia. Would love to hear it from a local point of view.
As someone that drove from Scandinavia to the Balkans. I am glad Prague is finally getting a ring road... Driving through downtown Prague is such a hassle, after you have driven on highways till now..
only metropolis in EU where you have to drive on scenic road through city center..😊
How many years ago it was? Such price is totaly off in 2024, that's like price 15 years ago.
@@PidalinTen years ago you could get a 0,5 l Gambrinus at a small restaurant at the train station in Plzen for 21 Kc. I was there in July of 2014. :)
@@testcardsandmore1231 Ok, but Gambrinus is the cheapest one. 😀
Honest Guide should have a Czech news video every week.
£11 for a beer in the centre of Prague? Holy crap!!! 🤯
tourist trap, not a regular price
That's the same as in an airport.
A year ago I got beer for 57 Kč, like €2.3 but when my dad came to visit me in Prague at some point as he needed to rest he decided to sit in one of those places in the Old Town Square and paid 125 Kč if ai remember correctly, like €5.
It was a year ago and beer price apparently increased but if you don’t go in tourist places you can find decent prices.
i watch your channel because you make straight forward content, time to time even slightly "scary" content, but i think thats a life of journalist.
Can you make an video about the Christmas markets in Prague?
Its a scam. Avoid ham and tredlnik at all cost.
what an honest youtuber you are bro 😍🤍💚🤍💚🤍
The only upside of it appearing in USA Today is that no one takes it seriously anyway but you have to rat it out anyway.
Cheapest Beer I have ever had in Prague was in 2015 when exchange was almost 39CZK to 1GBP.
There were some bars where you could get a half litre for just under £1
Flights wise cheapest I have ever had return was £90
Not now though , prices have gone through the roof. Still cheaper than the UK though for Staropramen
local uk bar has it on tap for £5.30
In prague about £2.30
Thank you Janek, your videos made my stay too Prag so much more enjoyable.
I'm looking forward to go back there...
I did go to the Christmas market in the Old Square. I loved it! We also stopped at a couple markets in Germany. Prague was my favorite (and we are going to go back for a longer stay in two years).
I think it’s part of a new explosion of the old trend of US tourists visiting ‚europe‘. Portugal is also hit with this. And Americans don’t usually understand that precision matters when researching for a trip here
I remember seeing on CNN for the most underrated tourist locations Tartu in Estonia. Nice city, but barely enough to occupy someone for two days
That new concert hall looks like an eyesore.
When I found out Prague didn't have a (complete) ring road, I immediately canceled my planned trip.
Love your vides. Wish I had been familiar with Honest Guide before my wife and I spent a week in Prague in July 2023. Nevertheless, though we undoubtedly dined at many of the wrong places, Prague was the high point of our holiday and we would love to return and spend all of our time in the Czech Republic. Our next visit will be better informed thanks to Honest Guide.
I lived in Teplice and worked on Duchcov for a year. Stuff was definitely cheaper there. But I don't drink alcohol, so I can't speak to the prices. I did go to Prague at least once a month. It's my favorite city in the ehole world. Came back in 2003 and then in 2006 for my honeymoon. Hoping to return in 2025. It's been too long.
Your channel is so good! Really love it. I wish we had someone like you to do this in my city Antwerp Belgium. We have the best beer tbh,.. and they need to stop calling fries, french fries because it is actualy from Belgium 😅
Ahoj! ČD754 Brejlovec mikina😍 where I can get one? One of my favorites locos. And I here you guys, travel articles regarding Kraków are basically nonsense as well🤷♂. Srdečné pozdravy.
I wonder if “from austria to Slovakia” was the closest thing to “from a to z” they could come up with, and then never bothered to look at the map lol
I remember buying a 500ml beer (or 5) in Praha 2 (CIRCA 1995) for 12.5 crowns (exchange rate was about 24 to the $), but at the old town square it was 70 crowns.
Good work trying to make good what others get wrong.
The woman retreating also made me laugh😂
Let's just use AI to report on what one might have done in Prague...(I let it summarize in 2 paragraphs, and it's not written in the 1st person perspective)
While in Prague, one of the best things you might encounter is the magical atmosphere of the historic Old Town Square.
Pub in Lhotka sells Branik lager for 27kc (92p).
Awesome video!
The question is, would such journalists actually have the money to go to all the places they want to write about?
pretty sure that's a ChatGPT article
Bet the journos these days use them a lot. The rest is cappuccino and office gossip.
yes. true. same goes for job bloggers....those who haven't work in software industry for a single day writes long blogs for jobs-companies-corporate strategies.
“Austria to Slovakia” doesn’t literally mean the path between both. It’s saying from “A-Z”
1. Maybe the "Austria to Slovakia" was in alphabetical order, not geographical?
2. Perhaps the interview with the Mayor took place before the selection and announcement?
3. Definition, British: "Ale" --> beer
4. There's a big difference between "CAN GET" and "WILL GET" a beer for less than 2,60. Even you pointed out that the "average price is 2,30, so what's the lower price that's keeping the average from being higher?
5. I would say an extra parking space in a crowded city would be a net positive change. Besides, it looks like the additional space came after the post, since the pole was painted with the sign brackets in place.
At 4:17 I wonder if the backpack that was left behind was still there upon return.. 😊
...taking into account the look of the man standing up in the last seconds...
To be truly honest, there were at least two locals on the square: Janek and Honza. 😜
I really enjoy your enthusiasm.
I definitely bought a pint of beer in Prague for about £0.70...
... in 2007
Actually a half litre, you're right ofc
I wentp prague in oct 2023. Although my wife and I usually go to the most local places and followed ypur suggestions, we never found a pint of beer under 2. Half liter was about 4 and up or so in some places. You are right honest guy!!
The outer ring road around my city is phallus shaped. Try to beat that, Prague!
😅😮😊
you have done a great job my friend!
Every time when I visit Prague I don’t follow the tourist route I leave it and discover the best side.
You are honest even in the reasons to use a VPN. No bu11sh1t like “everyone can still your data on a public WiFi”. Love you dude ❤
Visited in 2007 and I did find a bar selling beer for about 70p. The tourist trap in the castle was £3.00. By my next visit, things had changed.
I especially despise the Thai ones from all these tourist bloggers, the level of ignorance is unbearable.
His Janek. I enjoy watching you on TH-cam. Your channel is very informative. Only one suggestion. Can you post more detailed information on the city? What are the names of the different areas? Places of interest to visit by public transport. Location of places of interest and their relationship to the general area. In short, it’s like explaining the city layout. Make sense?
I love Prague and spent 4 trips exploring the city on my own. Thanks for sharing the culture and community on your videos. Can't wait to come back! And yes, Booziest article is garbage. He/She wrote it for likes not to showcase the amazing city. See you soon! Hello from Los Angeles CA!
