  • Critics' Lab | Ryan Coleman reviews Claire Denis' "Stars at Noon" at Cannes 2022!
    --
The Critics’ Lab is an action developed by Unifrance during Cannes Film Festival to encourage the emergence of tomorrow’s critics. Four emerging journalists (Juan Barquin, Ryan Coleman, Alexandria Slater, and Aramide Tinubu) were selected by four eminent American and British film journalists (Richard Lawson - Chief Critic at Vanity Fair; Eric Kohn - Executive Editor & Chief Critic at IndieWire; Justin Chang - Chief Critic at the LA Times; Finn Halligan - Chief Critic & Reviews Editor at Screen International). These young journalists from the US and the UK, represent the diversity of our society, and are invited by Unifrance to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival to cover new-generation French cinema.

Really appreciate your review. I just watched the film 3 times in 36 hours. I traveled in Africa for a year in the 70’s. Denis perfectly captures what it’s like to be a young privileged while woman flirting with danger…..

I completely agree! I was worried that Qualley would not be able to separate enough from her role in Maid and she did a fantastic job subtly separating her two roles & not becoming a Dakota Johnson, so I was pleasantly surprised. Robert Pattinson was supposed to be the original co-star for Margaret? You blew my mind with this one haha. While he is literally fit for movies like this I can't picture this movie with him and Margaret, Joe Alwyn is Daniel in every way and that chemistry was definitely not ever going to be the same if it was Pattison and this coming from a controversially Pattison fan. Loved your review, you described the movie exactly how it feels to watch it
