What can you say....flipping epic. Stokowski admired Bach so much as a classical composer. This orchestral version is truly timeless. Bach would of been impressed by Stokowski's dedication to bring these master works of true genesis up from the Organ to the orchestra. Haunting and truly timeless. No music can match the sheer awe-inspiring orchestral/Stokowski version of Toccata & Fugue. If God exists, this is the music the spirit of God would listen too.

I think the timbre of the brasswinds and modern woodwinds would have amazed Bach too.

I agree. I think this performance is better than the recording. Look how inspired the orchestra was... when have you ever seen an orchestra play with such intensity?

Hub ... Hear, hear. ... And why can’t something like this be the Super Bowl halftime show? ... I feel especially sorry for today’s youngin’s - crimes of omission - cultural grand theft - substitution of lofty heights with satanic trash. .... Who is driving this, and to what end?

It takes so much imagination to take a bach organ piece and make into a huge orchestra piece that Mahler wishes he could write. It's just so beautiful and powerful and scary. I wonder what bach would have wrote if he had a giant orchestra like this. But I'll gladly take this

OK I’ll say it. This is THE best transcription of ANY piece of music EVER written!!!!’

No doubt about that. There is something about this work that make it the ideal for transcription to large orchestra, no other composition, though often very suitable, is quiet as successful.

Yes you are absolutely right (in my opinion). To even dare to transcribe such an iconic piece of music was considered a 'crime' back then. The world then realised it was indeed a stroke of genius by the maestro.

Great treatment. Stokowski is like an artist throwing colors on a canvas. Beautiful.

Immortalized by Stokwski and Disney in 1940. I was fortunate to see him conduct in London when I was very young in the late 60`s. Don`t remember a lot about the performance but I do remember his presence in front of the orchestra, a real legend if ever there was one.

It is Interesting to watch the violinists on some phrases using a technique called 'open bowing', also known as 'free bowing'. Most conductors prefer the conventional style of synchronised bowing - but Leopold was a visionary so to speak, and the overall sound he obtained from the orchestra was deeper and richer. It was first experienced by millions of music lovers in the original movie soundtrack from Walt Disney's Fantasia.

Leopold probably received inspiration from a higher force to even contemplate transcribing this iconic masterpiece for full orchestra. The limited depth and clarity captured on this recording can be enhanced by wearing a good set of headphones - but please be careful of your eardrums! This interpretation will be enjoyed by millions of music lovers for generations to come. Bravo Maestro!

If you’re an orchestra member under the hands of this maestro you’d better be giving it all you’ve got!!!! Stokowdki was a member of the chosen triad. God Almighty ‘s music funneled to Bach then down to Stokowski for this transcription. No further words. My heart ❤️ is just pounding!!!!

Baton? Silly little stick that would add nothing! Stokowski has his arms and hands. That’s all that is needed! Notice he rarely (if ever) looked at the score . He knows every note and nuance by heart ❤️.

In this one Stokowski looks like Bilbo Baggins :D

Just for the record. Great to see friends in the viola section most no longer with us. Harry Danks, Eric Sargon (alive), Gordon Humfress and I think John Coulling. Paul Beard leading the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

I've reverted the picture back to the original TV ratio so that you can see the players un-cropped! ... It means having black bars on either side but you can easily switch to 'theatre' or 'full screen' mode for a larger image and a better view of the orchestra. The complete programme, which is in the public domain, is also up-loaded here under the title "The Conductor Speaks." In this, Stokowski also conducts music by Purcell, Bax and Enesco ...

it's such a shame it has 42k views and even one dislike, it's the music that keeps the planet alive since our God loves music, he listens to this and says - I'm proud of you my people, let's postpone the Judgment Day for a bit more.

What need had this man for a baton? He appears to have been perfectly capable of conveying what he wanted done without one.

    • @jojoUK120
      @jojoUK120 6 ปีที่แล้ว

John Ries Absolutely, he’s dynamite! But maybe he should have used a whip on this lot. (correct me if I’m wrong) eg. 2:54 looks to me like nobody’s paying a blind bit of notice- It seems the sound’s in sync with the picture from bow strokes- they’re just not following his tempo changes. It does sound very safe and stodgy compared to earlier recordings of his.
