Mr. Ratan Tata's mother was French & when she came to India after her marriage, wanted to start a cosmetic company, as at those times cosmetics were all imported from Europe. The first organised & large scale cosmetic company in South Asia was Lakme. As she was looking for a suitable name for her cosmetic, interestingly in India Lakshmi name was synonymous with wealth &. spirituality. In French Lakshmi is pronounced as Lakme. So Lakshmi become Lakme. One of the biggest cosmetic brand in world.
