Signs of a Changing Season

  • Signs of a changing season.
The wind and rain was a sign that the summer was coming to an end.
The rivers levels had been up and down a bit,
but a couple of settled days gave them a chance to drop.
There was little hatching, a few stoneflies late morning and one or two up-wings, however the first downpour of the day put and end to that.
So swung flies most of the time.

    Hi Luke,
here's hoping there are more exploits to follow before the trout season ends although I see from one your comments below that you will continue to fish over the coming months? Following your video clips has been a boon during these past six months as a recurring back injury has been playing me up and has virtually curtailed any hope of fishing. And so, please keep them coming. The close up shots of the pair of swallows were uplifting. Many thanks

      Hello Peter.
There will certainly be more videos, I'm hoping to get out with the camera once (or twice) before the trout season ends, and then of course we have the Grayling...
Sorry to hear about your back and I hope it recovers enough fo you to get out fishing.
The Swallows nest next to the cottage and often sit out side the back door.
They are good indicators of the season.
      Regards.

had two one ponders last night on back and one for pot as nymph was to far down to retrieve but big surprise on cleaning was to find a whole 2" long crayfish in the stomach...........never heard of that before.

That's a nice brace of fish.
I've heard of trout eating crayfish,I think the trout have to be a reasonable size before they can eat them, once they do they can pack on the weight.

Hi Luke - can I ask what landing net are you using? It looks really good and easy to use - much better than the small pan style net I have and with it extending it exactly what I’m looking for.

      Hello Nick.
It's an old ABU one, I don't know the model but it works really (really) well. I'd certainly recommend keeping an eye on ebay. I doubt I'd go back to those small scoop ones now.

Such a beautiful video Luke. My blood pressure always drops when I watch your footage. I'm wondering was that a cane or carbon fibre rod you were using? I really missed your clips throughout this season. I hope you're keeping well..best wishes..Neil Glavin.

Thanks Neil. That rod is a carbon, does work well for swinging flies.
I'm hoping to get out a few times with the camera over the coming months so hopefully they'll be more videos up shortly.
      All is well here.
Hope you've doing OK, and have managed to get out on the water in this rather strange season...

Another nice film so kept me watching you again and always interesting , this old novice had three half pound brownies on pheasant tail nymph the other evening but like your river mine is now in spate and for the third time in a couple of weeks so no fishing for a day or two. Don't know what they're feeding on, nothing in the air now and turned over umpteen stones but no sign of anything so a bit puzzled.

Glad you enjoyed it Michael. A few half pounders sounds like a pleasant evening.
Hopefully the rivers and weather will settled down and we'll have a good end to a rather strange season.
