In the 90's a friend bought a Atari Jaguar with Atari Kar. I fell in love with the music and creepy presentation. An awesome Mario Kart alternative. This game screams European all over.
It looks like Atari said "Hey we can have our own successful kart racer!" but then someone noted "But we don't really have any mascot characters to use" and they then said "Screw it just put in what first comes to mind."
They actually had characters they could have put in, but didn't: Commander Champion from Atari Force, Major Havoc, Yar, Charley Chuck, and fuckin ZOOL!
goodness me that title music can suck the life out of anyone. Just what were Atari thinking with the Jaguar. So underpowered and with games like this that might very well be enjoyable enough but reek of a lack of understanding for the market. Expected so much more at the time having gamed on the Lynx On it's own merits it might be a reasonable time but it's so devoid of life or character as to think why they bothered. Was it perhaps just one person that developed this?

Amiga could output impressive 2d graphics, but I always wondered if the bookkeeping with the DMA channels (similar to PC) is necessary. Jaguar tries to use some clever priority algorithm and fails even for 2d graphics. Or at least to be able to change “modes”. Comic graphics with palette, vs realistic 16 bpp. Now I wonder if an internal (to Tom) 64 bit bus would have worked. Like on C64 use both phases. External memory is slow and can only load or store a phrase every 2nd clock that means every 4th phase. 320 or 256 px only need videoDMA every 10 cycle? Object description could be stored on chip and read at one phrase per cycle. Scaled, and colorred objects are written to a linebuffer every cycle. Palette lookup ( in groups of four ). So we could easily fill all phases. 8kB RAM on chip could be used for 3d code, texture memory, or 2d object description, cache for scaled up patterns . .. 8kB are 1000 phrases. Roughly 16 banks of 64x64 bit . Each bank could be accessed in any phase, but is then occupied for the next phase. Or only 4 banks? With a fixed rhythm it is easy to first send the address and in the next phase retrieve data. Switches between load and store (per bank) and between phases can be placed at safe time distance.
The way this game is presented is like somebody died and all the characters are doing a tournament in his/her memory
The music is kinda sad sounding but it's really good. Especially the farm track music, that's a bop!

It honestly wouldn't have been so much of a problem weren't it for the fact that the game offers less than its competitor.

it wasnt ready until the jaguar was dead in late 1995 2 years after jag launched in 1993
jaguar aces is almost impossible to place first. but the miracle race in jaguar aces isnt too hard if u know where to drive.
It has some nice songs music and art style!

That music is terrible and the tracks look very simplistic and repetetive. Also I don't see any items, isn't that the whole point of kart racers?
I don't think they are terrible, I just see that they do not fit on this game at all
The music is also butchered thanks to the awful replayer used. The acutal music files sound much much much better
maybe not the #1 worst, but definitely one of the shittiest racing games ever made
its pretty fun actually
