  • In 2019 I had the chance to hike the John Muir trail, a hiking trail that is considered by many, one of the most beautiful hikes in the USA.
    This video documents the journey in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, beginning from Yosemite Valley and ending on Mount Whitney, going thru wilderness areas and the national parks Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia NP. Spending 17 days in nature, and hiking total of 236mi or 380km.
    Sit back, relax and enjoy this journey into nature.

    I got to do the JMT from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney as a 15 year old in 1968 with 8 others in our group. Spent 28 days doing it with rest days on Wednesday's and Sunday's. Caught lots of trout for dinner and breakfast at Rae Lakes, one of the prettiest lakes along with 1,000 Island Lakes just out of Yosemite National Park. You missed videoing the best hamburger and fries at the Mt. Whitney portals cafe. Thanks for bringing back the memories of the JMT. I also got to do the High Sierra Trail from the Sequoia National Park trailhead to Mt. Whitney with my son in September 2015 and stood on top of Mt. Whitney a second time. High Sierra's is one of my favorite places.

    I see others are saying this: This is the best JMT video I've seen. You did everything right in your production. No loud, obnoxious music. Very little "talking face" time- when you are on camera it is almost all of you doing things, not babbling. Steady cam and nice slow pans. Congratulations and thanks.

    Hello Lyubo, outstanding video, thank you for sharing. It looks like you carried the Bear Vault 450, is this correct? There is the notion that the Arc Haul has problems with carrying the bear canister..what was your maximum load and what was your base weight? Did you carry the food in the bear canister or outside in a different bag. I am not sure what back pack I should buy, ZPacks Arc Haul or ULA Circuit..Thank you

    • @luboyanev
      @luboyanev  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Juergen, Thanks for the comment!
      Yes, I did carry the BV450, but a BV500 could also fit vertically inside the Arc Haul. If the Arc is arced, it was better the bear can to be above the middle - so it is above the horizontal carbon stray in the middle of the pack. I also experimented (as seen on day 3 - 6:58) while hiking to have most of the things out of the bear can, and carry the bear can empty outside and on top of the pack (using the V top strap), however the BV450 is pretty short so it would slide to the sides, with the BV500 it should fit better on the outside as it is longer.
      And my base weight on the JMT was 18lbs including the bearcan, microspikes, 4lbs of camera gear incl. solar panel... since that trip I have learned a bunch and removed some items and reduced the base weight some more. But the heavies weight I carried on the JMT was after MTR at about 33lbs with 7+ days of food. I have been very happy with the Arc Haul, I find it very comfortable and I like all the adjustments that it provides, and I don't have any experience with the ULA Circuit, but from what I have heard it should carry up to 35lbs comfortably as well.
      Hope that helps, happy hiking!

    Amazing footage. I have a dream of hiking the JMT. I am trying to apply for a permit in January for July, but, I hear it is very hard to get a permit. Any advice? New follower here. All the best, Crow✌️

    • @luboyanev
      @luboyanev  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Crow! Yes getting a permit can be tricky.. If you're flexible with the starting dates, there will be a higher chance of winning a hiking permit. Me personally, I had to start in the beginning of July and I didn't win a permit for these days, but then I was checking the trailhead cancellations reports every day and once I saw an opening date that suited me, I called the ranger and got the permit that way. And there's also a third option of getting a walk-in permit from Tuolumne meadows, but this way you skip some beautiful sections of Yosemite valley (and I also had a Half Dome permit and I wanted to hike that too). I hope that helps, happy trails!

    • @Gandhiownsyou
      @Gandhiownsyou 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Consider a northbound permit instead. If you start at Mt. Whitney instead of Yosemite you have about 3x better chance to get a permit in the lottery. If you’re willing to hike an extra 25-30 miles, you can also get a continuous hiking permit from Inyo National Forest that exits at Yosemite. It covers the entire JMT but there’s no lottery to worry about. A friend and I are starting in Horseshoe Meadow which will have us hiking 25 miles over two days to get to Guitar Lake. We’ll summit Whitney on day 3 to officially start the JMT going north, ending at Yosemite.

    • @luboyanev
      @luboyanev  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, getting a northbound permit should be much easier compared to the traditional way hiking south. The only consideration would be elevation, as hiking southbound the trail progressively gets from lower to higher elevation ending at Mt. Whitney, while going north it gets to high elevation and the highest passes very early on trail.

    • @Gandhiownsyou
      @Gandhiownsyou 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@luboyanev agreed, elevation is a definite concern. I personally didn’t consider a Whitney Portal permit for this reason. Coming from a low lying area, I’m opting to take a night in LonePine prior to starting the trail, and then spend two days at elevation while hiking in from Horseshoe Meadow, with the hope that three days and nights at elevation will be enough acclimatization to handle Whitney. The negative to this approach is dealing with an enormous food carry since I won’t be resupplying until MTR, 9 days in. But since I’m doubling back, I should be able to stash a fair amount of gear at either Crabtree Meadows or Guitar Lake for the Whitney summit.

    Loved this! It got me excited for my trip in 2021 (fingers crossed). I solo backpacked in Yosemite for the first time this summer and your intro showing Yosemite Valley brought me right back to my first time seeing the giant beauty of the wilderness.
    I have one question. I see you have a BV450. Was it big enough for all of your food or do you think it would be better to have a larger can? I have a BV450 and I'm trying to decide whether I should sell it and get the BV500. Thanks!

    • @luboyanev
      @luboyanev  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! Yes, Yosemite was such a beautiful place to start the hike.
      And regarding the bear canister, it was really cramped and after passing by VVR I couldn't fit all of my food in it, so I had to store 2 ziploc bags of couscous (no spices or anything) for 2 dinners, outside of the canister and inside my tent for 1-2 nights.
      One good tip would be to try and test at home, how many days of food you can for in yours. And I had actually tried that, but I also ended up taking some snacks from the hiker box and it then became too cramped in the bear can :)

      And that was called Guthooks, and now has been renamed to FarOut, it is a really useful app! The app is free but you have to pay to download the specific trail that you choose to hike. The app then gives offline access to camp spots, water sources, river crossings, resupply points along the trail, and all of them with comments from other hikers (very useful if for example the next water source has dried out). They don't have those guides for all of the trails around the world, but they have a good selection. Definitely recommend the app 👍

    Great documentation of your hike. I noticed you were carrying your DSLR/ ML camera. Did you have a tripod too? How heavy was your backpack at its heaviest? I am doing the JMT later this year and really want to take my DSLR and tripod, but the extra 7 lbs is making me wonder if it is worth it?

    • @luboyanev
      @luboyanev  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! And yes it is a tough decision to be as light as possible while also carrying the camera gear.. I had a small tripod with me, and in total I had about 1.8kg/3.9lbs of camera gear. I have since changed a few of the items that I carry, other lenses and other camera body, but still using the same small tripod. It is very low to the ground, so sometimes it can make it harder to get the best looking shots, so I have been considering getting a slightly heavier tripod, that goes at least a bit higher up. I will post a link with all of my gear of that trip below. And you can also see a list of my more current setup in the description of the video.

    • @luboyanev
      @luboyanev  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! And yes, to hike the JMT it requires getting a permit. I hiked going south and I had first applied for the permit lottery which starts aprox 5 months (if I remember correctly) before the desired staying date. But I didn't win the permit for the days I wanted, so I was checking the trailhead cancellations reports, and I saw an opening for starting date that worked well for me and I called the ranger and got the permit that way. I would recommend googling "JMT permit" to get more familiar with the process, there are multiple ways to get it, depending also on is you're hiking north or south bound. Happy trails!

  • @lightwalker4558
    @lightwalker4558 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    P.S. The JMT lottery process changed quite a bit this year. In summary, you need to re-apply every week costing $10 each time.
    I won a pick for a June 6 departure from Lyell Canyon. I'm still trying for a later date and am sure it will be impossible to get a pick from July 1 to early Sept. I hope to climatize for a week at my cousin's house in Boulder and her rental in Dillon. I'm also hoping to get a walk-up permit to hike the 35 mi. from Yosemite Valley to Lyell so I can complete the whole trail. Please wish me luck.

    • @luboyanev
      @luboyanev  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the update, I did not know that. I hope you will get the Happy isles trailhead permit! Btw. I didn't win the permit with the lottery. The way I got the permit was through checking daily the trailhead cancellation reports on the website of the national park, and because it was a high snow year, there were people cancelling their permits in early July, so as soon as I saw that there was an opening for a date that worked for me, I called the ranger and booked the permit. Happy trails, and I hope you have a great time out there!

    Really enjoyable watch, and the only video I'm aware of from a european. I would like to do this myself but obviously the logistics of resupply are far harder from europe. How did you manage that? Did you bring over your food and then post once you were in the USA? I have heard that one of the resupply points (JMT Ranch?) requires supplies to be sent weeks ahead of time and in a barrel. Did you have a friend stateside to help?

    • @luboyanev
      @luboyanev  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I didn't have a friend in the area so I had to figure out the resupply by myself. I ended up arriving about 1 week before starting the trail, and I bought all the food and divided it in individual bags for breakfasts, snacks, dinners. Then I sent a package to VVR and to the Post Office in Independence, labeled as General delivery where they can keep it for up to 30days. And it is true, some of the places require you to send the package weeks in advance, but it also takes some time to get to there, so that is also an advantage. In 2019 it was a high snow year so Tuolumne Meadows was still closed, but if the snow has melted and they are open there is an option to send a package to there as well. Then I also resupplied in the town of Mamoth lakes by taking the bus from Reds Meadow. And I didn't send a package to Muir trail ranch, because it was quite expensive, but Ryan that I was hiking with had sent a package to there and I went with him and scopped up a few things from their hiker box :) And as I said, then I resupplied in Independence, but that required getting off trail, and then hiking back up again. If I had carried about 1-2 more days worth of food with, I could have skipped that extra side trip. I hope that helps!

    Is that a self-inflating sleeping mat you used? If so, how was it for you? I like how they have some foam in them, so they don't feel and act so much like a ballon, like the inflatable mats can be. Also, the self-inflating mats are much quieter. They are more bulky and heavier than the inflatables.

    • @luboyanev
      @luboyanev  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, well spotted. It is an old Thermarest Prolite self-inflatable mat, and while it was comfortable and relatively light 456g/16oz, it was taking way too long to deflate and pack, so for the next hike (in 2020 - The five mountain trek in Bulgaria) I switched to the Nemo Switchback foam pad, it was still comfortable for me, lighter, and took no time to setup and pack, but.. it is quite bulky.
      So for this year I'm opting out to try the Thermarest Neoair Xlite short version, with an additional 1/8" pad for the hips and legs, and I did try it out and it does a have a bit more of that ballon feeling compared to the self-inflatable, but it is significantly lighter and also easier to pack.
      So that's my plan for now, hope that was helpful. Happy hiking!

    Stunning. Excellent work sir. I especially liked how you had the same shots on your 15mile out and back in resupply. Subtle humor? nicely done.
