There has nothing to do with west or India about this approach. The point here is to critique, ask in any issue eg. caste system, gender,capitalism, marketization, ecology etc. So it's relevant
The speaker says the following regarding competition differing from society to society: a "critical perspective, on the other hand, will look at things historically and say competition was never always natural, and I'll give you a very small example. In a real example . . . A teacher . . . " That is just that - an example. As helpful as one example might be, we care about broader data. Not one example. Not one case. This is extremely disappointing. It is part of the 'storytelling' of critical approaches. It turns the stomach because it is academically lacking (at ca. minute 15:00). Simply put: the idea is put forth that ideas of competition vary from culture to culture. Ok. That is a hypothesis. One group of children taught by one teacher in one location represents the 'evidence.' Hmmm. Anecdotal. Accepted . . . as anecdotal evidence, one example. Not to be argued against, this one report. Indeed, here we have one case cited. This is so important to point out and repeat, because today's undiscerning ideology-fed students should be yelling the following at this point but are not: "Show me the data for more than just one group of children in one circumstance! What sort of scholarship is this that gives me one example and moves on. What do you take me for?" Why not just do the empirical research (it is difficult, I know, and that is why it is easier to just proclaim the ideology of Marxist 'criticism' of the West and say it of course has to be the case because my Marxist theory predicts it). Sad. I am a US American and do not like to see Indian professors passing on such subpar ideas. We have so many Americans of Indian descent and recent Indian immigrants doing extremely well in the US and contributing to its success. How disappointing it would be to see Indians infected with the ideology of the Marxist Frankfurt School in the USA. Let's keep on pursuing excellence. In this connection, watch Professor C. Bradley Thompson on MARXISM to understand the religion of Marxism ( th-cam.com/video/sNslJ8lX7SM/w-d-xo.html) This is exactly the danger of critical theory (Criticize. Repeat. Criticize. Repeat. Criticize. Repeat.). Sounds illiberal as all get out and produces shoddy "scholarship," and forgive me, sounds more like Hitler in Mein Kampf than a method of rigorous academic work (remember both left and right can be illiberal): Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" to send a chill: ". . . all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan" (Volume 1, Chapter 6). Data then, if it shows a majority report, indicates what is but not necessarily what should be. That requires a worldview, a metaphysic, an idea of what the world should be and even could be. And in the case of competition, society has developed and competition looks different under liberal economic systems than it did at the beginning of the industrial revolution or under mercantilism or under feudalism and so forth. That is hard work and not as easy to tease out as critical theorists believe. Given a Marxist (critical theorist) view of the world and human nature (everything, everything has to do with power dynamics within a dialectical materialistic worldview), let us try real hard to guess what is going to be the result. Hmmm.
Socialism has never worked. It only led to poverty and the death of millions. Greed is a natural human characteristic, acquired during our hunter gatherer period, as bad as it is, can be harnessed and turned into a force for good through capitalism. It provides incentive for people to innovate, which led to the most technologically advanced society ever. Competition provides the incentive to constantly improve, always striving to outperform others in your field. It also provides consumers with many choices and better service. For example. If their was only one kind of car, its quality would be very poor, with few features. What incentive would the manufacturer have to make a good product if he's the only game in town.
As you read below the comments by Drew N. you will experience the assumptions in the United States during the past four years 2016- 2020. I am shocked he got two thumbs up. 49% of the U.S. would support his comments. I am not one of them. I belong to the other "game in town", a more cooperative game.

She lacks pauses for reflection. I understand her. But her speech is machine like, like a typewriter.
