thelousyllama I assuming that the director said "For the scenes that have bad events, lets do handheld shots" I think then the cinematography decides how to do the shots the director requested. I could be ttotally wrong, this is just my guess.
One of my favorite small details in this scene is how you can tell she's ever so slightly annoyed with him when he says he can't wait for her show and she says "I can." and when he asks her can't she just rehearse anywhere and she says "Anywhere you are?" It shows that she feels he doesn't fully get that she doubts herself and that she feels he doesn't fully take her seriously.
I think it’s really interesting how he won’t look her in the eye through most of it (until he makes those blunt, cutting remarks), whereas she’s looking right at him basically the entire time.
This is what I noticed as well. I'm late to the party, only watched La La Land for the first time a couple of weeks back but can't get over the emotional punch at the end of the movie. This scene is one of those situations you wish you could take back. A lot of us have been here, not realizing the consequences. Seb's inability to look her in the eye when he is explaining his situation is, to me, his indecision about the choices he is making in his music career whereas Mia knows exactly what he wants really. Sometimes though, one has to give up on their dreams to make a living which in turn makes you always question the decision. As they say, the grass is always greener on the other side.
I agree. You can see his love for her in the fact that he can’t lie to her face. When he says “this is the dream,” which is a lie, he can’t look her in the eye.
I remember me and my sister reenacting the lines and instead the line was "You're an actress, who are to talk?" PS in case you're wondering we read this from some script
A clever little detail I spotted was that earlier in the movie Sebastian was bothered when Mia mentioned that people would talk over Jazz music in parties. And in this scene, he's doing just that, shows a bit of development, eh?
This was too sad :'( "You said yourself, no one wants to go to that club. No one wants to go to a club called Chicken-on-a-stick-" "So change the name." Although this exchange was a bit funny, you can hear and see the inevitable heartbreak/miscommunication behind it. You just know that Mia wanted so much for him yet Sebastian was trying to settle by giving up on it.
I heard someone said she didn't think la la land deserved the best screenplay(we were talking about golden globe) because she thought the story was too simple. But I think the most important part is how the screenplay tells the story. You can see how great the story go on with the lines just in this clip.
This scene was real intense when I first watched it. The captured tension is remarkable. And the way she does all of her acting from 5:40 to 6:00 with her expression is amazing.
I think she liked him more when he was unsuccessful. When his career started to pick up I think she felt that the thing thing that they had in common before wasn't there and they were slowly drifting apart. What do you think?
Movies with Matticus I think his career at first didn't turn out the way she wanted it to so she could see him 24/7. She wants him to do the club and not the band so she can always see him.
no she realized that he is playing music that he doesn't really like detouring from his original dreams that's why she was angry. Both of their Passion for work is what brought them together in the first place
I love how the shot-reverse shot between them punches in a little closer after 2:30. It’s as if what Mia said is what threw the conversation into something a lot more serious and the cinematography emphasizes that.
He knows she’s right; she’s giving a voice to his conscience, telling him he shouldn’t give up on his dream. And he hates himself for letting his fears about income get in the way, and he takes that self-hatred out on her. All the insults he’s been saying to himself, he projects onto her and reacts as if she’s saying them. When in fact she is only trying to be supportive. She’s not calling him a sell-out; she’s worried about his happiness. I don’t get why many people are saying Mia’s in the wrong here. She’s doing exactly what Seb has always done for her - give a reminder that their dreams are valid and worth chasing. Also Seb never communicates why he thinks Mia wanted him to be in the band; if he’d told her what he heard her say to her mom, the whole misunderstanding could’ve been corrected. This scene is where Mia really shows how much she believes in Seb, and how much she’s come around since the beginning where she “hated” jazz. Now she understands how important it is to Seb, and she’s afraid that if he gives up his dream, he’ll regret it and become bitter later on in life. She doesn’t want that for him…and that’s love.
Their number one problem was communication. The more they got closer to their dreams, the farther apart they got from each other and their relationship.
5:44, her eyes reveal so many thoughts as she realizes what he thinks of her versus her true intentions..the realization of miscommunication..heartbreak

Does anyone think the rehearsal thing was kind of a reference to when Emma Watson suggested if they could do the rehearsal for La La Land in London due to schedule conflict shooting Beauty and the Beast (idk if Emma actually said that but there has been rumours). It seems like it could happen because a lot of the stuff in the movie had actual incidents from the actor's experience and I mean Emma Stone had the same life and struggle like Mia

From what some musicians I follow said, when you're a new band it's pretty much touring all the time to put your music out there, until you're in a 'confortable' place and have a good following around the world. Even some bands that are pretty famous and have been around for years only take like a month or two for break, and then tour for 5, 6 months of something. Some tours can go on for a year with barely any breaks
Relationship merge the dream. Our body are our entirnal occupation 5:00 he opening up. Guys do have an internal clock call it lady like but ... be human be valuable. Don't be a partner that selecting fleeting emotions and fleeting candle light
This is a great movie as, mainly for me, it pulled emotional strings on both sides. This was a tough scene for me to watch. It starts off positively with both being pulled into, and feeding off of, each others' romanticism and you're thinking that it can only go up from here... think again. Up to this point they connected so well that they are becoming a "completed" couple. But, in this scene, they completely go off the rails and miss each altogether based on their own newly acquired, misleading, supposed inflexible agendas. This is what happens when you're both wrong and right at the same time, but both dig in your defensive, prideful heals. With a lack of self confidence, she was painfully afraid of her upcoming one woman Broadway play. On her ability, he always displays overconfidence which she frustratingly doesn't share and it seems to her that he just glosses over. She rebels by redirecting the attention through attacking his lack of conviction of following his passion. (Guys, this is a lesson in relationship life. If you don't line up with how a female feels about something that's important to her, she will go on the attack. And she is relentless in her ability to press your most hurtful buttons. And what do us males do? We go on the defensive, when we should truthfully point out what she's doing... like it or not. AND females stick to their guns… right or wrong. In a following scene he profusely apologizes, but she makes no attempt to do so even though she was a 50% contributor.) And Seb does go on the defensive and, for him, an honest one at that. He has a hard time understanding why she's giving him $hit about attempting to "grow up" based on fulfilling Mia's mother's wishes and concerns via the conversation he overheard she had with her mother (in a previous scene). BUT, he made a big mistake in assuming what her mother wanted is what she wanted as well. And so the never ending cycle of misunderstanding continues its momentum. It's a shame, but this is representational of how real life miscommunication negatively chips away at what could be a fruitful relationship. It’s hard to watch a happy and potentially long term relationship needlessly self-destruct.
food looks great and lighting is nice but Sebastian is not quite sure which direction he wants to go with his music career. He'll be on the road doing concerts, what will become of Mia?
Am I the only one who thinks that Mia acts like a selfish jerk? In this scene she whines at Sebastian that he's always touring and she can't spend time with him and that's an issue for her. Later when SHE gets the role demanding her to take a lengthy trip away from Sebastian, she's like - "ok im off to France LOL see you later (maybe)." She didn't like it when building a career in music became a priority for Sebastian, but didn't hesitate a second to make building a career in cinema a priority for herself. She didn't care if she loses Sebastian because of that or not.
Well, Mia is not worried that Seb is going to go away and they won't spend time together. She is just very much surprised that in a span of one night or maybe just a few days, he gave up his dream of saving jazz, and is going to the lengths of playing something he does not enjoy playing at all, for long term. Its the sudden urge of settling down with whatever he has of Seb's that is bothering Mia. And i believe so, cause quite frankly I too was taken by surprise by Seb's change of choice. Idk, that is what it seems like to me.
You aren’t the only one, but it is certainly a stupid opinion. The comment above basically says it all. Seb basically gave up on his dreams to settle and Mia was concerned about it. She was really annonying. Did not support him at all. Why the hell she was telling him what music he had to play? So rude. She was just frustrated and ambitious. He was right! PS Her eyes are huge.
Mia was concerned for him because he doesn’t enjoy what he does and he’s basically given up on the dream he’s been chasing for years now. All he could think about was traditional jazz but then he suddenly joined a fusion jazz band which went against everything he was for in his ideal jazz. She wanted him to follow his dreams and do what he enjoyed, but he was too caught up in his new fame - ignoring his true dream and his relationship.

Yeah. Handheld and shaky shots usually lend to a feeling of uncertainty and turmoil.
Also, the movie stops being a musical from this scene until her audition scene.
a lot of people complain about that, they wanted the movie to be a full on musical
One of my favorite small details in this scene is how you can tell she's ever so slightly annoyed with him when he says he can't wait for her show and she says "I can." and when he asks her can't she just rehearse anywhere and she says "Anywhere you are?"
