John Wayne walked up to me an asked best place to eat? He invited me to visit his yacht. So I did. JW took me to aft stateroom where I was face too face with Ben Johnson. The day was wonderful for me!

Victor McLaglen was great in this film as well, playing Maureen O'Hara's brother who disliked the Wayne character and refused to pay the dowry. He was also in a terrific film about "the troubles" in the 1935 film The Informer. One of the best films ever made on that subject in which he gave a magnificent performance. The film was also directed by John Ford. Ford received the Oscar for best director and McLaglen for best actor.

This is so cool! "The Quiet Man" is a great movie. I love how there are humorous touches to pay homage to the movie, like "The Dying Man Cottage" (though the man doesn't end up dying). Now, this video should have concluded with you riding away on your bus as we have one last look at the villagers you came to meet while the cheerful music from the end of the movie plays.
"Here's a good stick to beat the lovely lady" - said by a sweet-sounding older lady in the crowd of excited / curious / slightly concerned villagers watching John Wayne dragging Maureen O' Hara (one of his best friends in real life) back to their house. There's much more to this situation - have to watch the movie, and how this scene ends is great.

when u walked up the street from the dying mans house..that red car beside the flag is the very spot where john Wayne and Maureen filmed the very last scene in Ireland..when they came into town on the jaunting car and shes telling Sean to get the money from her brother and she goes to hit him with the whip and then he has to go walking...another thing the shop across the road in the film which is across the road from the red car...was called Emily o connor in the film..but that wasn't the shops name..that was the shop owners mothers name..he wanted to see his mothers name on the big screen.

Ariel, missed this live, if you haven't seen 'The Quiet Man' give it a go, it's a good film, if I remember correctly Maureen O'Hara had a few brothers in the film, in one scene she's serving whole cooked potatoes to them, some of them hit the plates, some don't! Their 1st 'date' had to be chaperoned-hopefully your future Scottish wife won't throw potatoes at you, and you'll not need a chaperone for your 1st date 🤭😳😂I've been to Cong - very nice little village, nice river too😊

We took a tour of Ireland with CIE bus tours years ago. One of our stops was in Cong where we took the Quiet Man tour. Pat Cohan's was a closed grocery store at the time with plans to turn it into an actual bar, which it had never been. The church in the film was a protestant Church of Ireland church, and they had to move the holy water font from the Catholic church to the outside of the protestant church for a famous scene in the film. They forgot to put the font back after the scene and that caused a bit of a fuss the next Sunday. The houses used for the Danaher and Reverend Playfair residences were pointed out.. The ruined abbey of course was used for the kiss in the rain scene. They had members of the tour re-enact scenes from the movie at the quiet man cottage. I think we took a spin through the grounds of Ashford castle where some of the scenes were shot. It was interesting to see how they were able to create the sense of a much bigger space by careful aiming of the camera.
Towards the end the bus driver asked if I could have the tour members gather on a little bridge. It is just up from the Quiet Man Cottage on the left hand side (you can see it at 16:53 with green railings). I had noticed a line down the middle separating Galway from Mayo. So in keeping with the spirit of the tour, I asked if they should gather on the Galway Side or the Mayo side.
The bus tour was interesting and I would recommend a CIE tour for a first visit to Ireland as a good introduction and overview.

This is a prime example of why we don't book tours. We want to relax & casually explore till our hearts' content.
Even more so when we take a vacation. The point for us is to get away from deadlines & micromanagement. To simply just be for awhile.

But john wayne was six feet four ? He doesn't look it by comparison with co star . The statue follows a picture on a bill for the show and saves use of excess medium ? .Admittedly a quoted 77 kg weight on the internet must be wrong? Of course cinematography easily fakes size to make people look appropriately sized for the role.
