I think they really upped the message of this song to be even more inclusive for all. If they, with all their different backgrounds and stories can make up this stunning group and be such good friends, then, so can we. When I first saw them with their cards, then the vocal buildup. It sounded like bells pealing through the world. It's stunning! Also, I would love to see your reaction to their cover of 'Can't Hold Us' by Macklemore and Lewis They RAP!!

I'm not sure of you caught it, but each of the cards not only describes the person holding it, but the word on the card when they pass it to the next person is what they have on common so Mitch to Scott "LGBTQ+" Scott to Avi "Man" Avi to Kevin "American" & Kevin to Kirstie "Christian"! Cool huh?! Great reaction!

Avi Kaplan, the bass singer, has a 5 octave vocal range and often surprises people with how high he can go. In his solo career, after leaving Pentatonix 4 years ago, it has become a game among his fans trying to figure out whether they are going to hear a bass/baritone or one sung in more of a low tenor/baritone tone. His latest releases went from deep baritone/bass, "First Place I Go" to a higher tone in both "All's Well" and "I Can't Lie".
This song was something Pentatonix wanted to do before he left because of the additional ethnic and religious diversity having him in the band represented.

Well done, and thanks. I’ve been a fan of PTX for a minute now, and, despite all the world’s ills, things have gotten better since this song first came out. No member of Pentatonix would have had an easy time back then. Being gay, black, Jewish and Latina, they all would have had to address blatant prejudice in 60s or 70s America. Still room for improvement, no doubt, but there has been improvement in that sense. You may be interested in Superfruit, a side project for several years by Mitch and Scott. Their Frozen medley (with Kirsten too) is really good, with hilarious bloopers at the very end. And their original Guy.Exe is fun. Peace from Ohio …

Also, if you enjoy Avi's low bass notes, you definitely need to check out his collaboration with Home Free for "Ring of Fire" (originally by Johnny Cash). He left the group a few years back and has a solo career now. He and his band are leaving day after tomorrow for his European tour.
From time to time, he will get up in the morning, start a live stream and chat with and sing to his fans.
No recording studio, no fanfare, he just gets his guitar, sits somewhere in his cabin deep in the forest, and just sings.
Here is him singing one of his songs. Not really asking you to react to it, but just to listen to him.

  • @ruth2141

I believe the version of the song they based this on is Lennon's solo singing with piano. PTX's background pulsing "doo doo doo" is re-creating the piano part. The message they emphasized was a plea for racial / ethnic harmony, which was a big thing in the US that year; this came out just a few months before Charlottesville. But Lennon's original message -- that without religion and borders everyone could live in peace -- is really appropriate right now.

Enjoyed this reaction but actually it's a John Lennon song. I'd like to see you do a reaction on Sound of Silence a song from the late 60's I believe. It's got Matt the bass that replaced Avi, dark haired guy with the beard. Avi left in latter part of 2017 on good terms and Matt, officially, joined in early 2018. I'd also recommend their originals Love Me When I Don't, Be My Eyes. Their cover of Daft Punk medley won them their 1st Grammy and was taped in Kevin and Avi's apartment in Avi's closet, and would be a cool one for a reaction and just so you know yes they do it live. Actually they won't do a song if they can't do it live and if they use any instruments you'll see it in the video and in concert. Any song you choose to react to will be great. They never miss.

Pentatonix is very good. I only know of one acapella singing group that's better (namely, VoicePlay), and even then, Pentatonix is better at doing the EDM style that they're known for.
Voctave is arguably better at harmony, specifically, but their arrangements and beat boxing are not in the same quality tier as PTX or VP (which, granted, is a rather high standard), and they need more singers to fill out the wall of sound (they're almost a choir), and subjectively to my way of thinking they're not as good at making the music *fun* , so overall I do not rate them as highly. And somebody's going to jump in and say Home Free, but they mostly sing country music, so screw them and the rusty pickup they rode in on.
