I'm really glad you mentioned filling out the permit to let the forest service know you're there. I live an hour away from Mt. Rainier and a friend of mine went for what she thought was a winter day hike. Weather was coming in and she checked with the rangers to see when and what elevation it was expected, and since she wasn't going to a certain elevation, they didn't have her sign in. Long story short, weather came in lower than expected and she spent two nights stuck on the mountain without anyone looking for her. She didn't tell any friends she was going and no sign in with the rangers. After a series of events that prevented her from coming down the same day she started, she ran into a group of search and rescue people looking for a few people who did not survive the storm. They were shocked and emotional because they did not expect to run across her since there was no record of her. Moral of the story? Always let someone know where you're going when doing outdoorsy stuff and be prepared to get stuck overnight. If she didn't have her essentials and a shovel to dig a snow cave, she wouldn't be here now.
Hey Suzi, Great point! We do that as well most of the time. All of the time in the winter and always if we are going off trail or on a challenging route.
@@tahoemountainlife I'm glad you guys do, I really hope that everyone who watches your channel see this and will fill them out as well. Or check in with the rangers. I know people go missing up here all the time and are underprepared because it will be a nice, warm, sunny day and the weather changes in minutes. I'm sure it's the same way there. These places are amazing, but dangerous.
I LOVE this hike...just did it a few days ago :) We got to the base, but it was getting dark so we had to head back. Next time, we will go early! Thanks for the nice video!!
Great Video I did this with my Border collie and hiked it with Bad advise We were on our way to the lakes on top but I had to call it same place you guys did with a dog its impossible to continue on What a great hike and workout My Pup loved it
Wow. Did you get the day off yesterday. Beautiful way to spend the new Federal holiday off. Thanks for sharing the Waterfall footage. They are my favorite. 😊
Dude. Just hiked this on my first backpack trip ever to Ropi Lake. Hardest and sketchiest hike ive done ha. Hard because of the 40+ lbs pack but the sketchy part is an understatement. And ive hiked all over California. Yosemite, lassen, death valley, etc.
Free parking if you have the Senior Lifetime National Park pass. I left mine displayed on the dash, though worried someone might break in to steal it. Be careful far up about 1/3 up the falls since the rocks are sloped and polished, so slick even when dry. I think at 9:44, below that rock ledge. Need sticky shoes or scramble on the rocks higher up. Plenty of water still flowing in mid-Oct 2023 due to massive snowfall.
Great video! The way you took is super sketchy near the falls. I've seen families in sandals taking that route... wild! If you stay left and go towards the big granite wall... there's a lot safer route to make it up.
Your hike reminds me of a hike I took in 2006 to Shirley Lake near Olympic Valley. Lots of granite to hike on ended up having to help carry our friends medium size dog 1/3 of the way back down due to having skinned up paws. 😮 Poor doggie, beautiful lake.
sorry to hear about the dog. I will have to look into that hike!

My goodness, you mean the poor dog went up without any shoes? That's not good to do. My dog always has her shoes on when hiking on rocks. Heck, when she's just walking in the neighborhood, she insists on wearing high heels!

Suggestion: About that music, it came on a little strong, loud and wild for my taste. I find, it's best not to include music, so the viewer can choose his own from a 2nd TH-cam page. These hikes, walks & drives are always good with the right, personal choice for music playing on a 2nd page.
Horsetail falls is a beautiful hike and there are some pretty lakes beyond the falls. My Dad took the entire family up there when my sister and I were only 10 and 7 and we really enjoyed the scrambling. You can scramble all the way up Pyramid Peak from the falls although there might still be alittle too much snow right now. Comming down in a Thunderstorm with slick rock and lightning strikes not too far away was not as fun, my mom especially didn't like that part. This was the hike that really got me interested in hiking I did a backpacking trip with my Dad every year after this. Ralston, Tallac, Mt Rose and Round Top are also great hikes although nothing compares to Yosemite/Eastern Sierra.
Did you find a Coast Inn that you were looking for for pet friendly? I saw one near where I live called Sonoma coast villa. $269 a night. I think most the others in Bodega Bay might be booked.
@@tahoemountainlife Sure, good choice for you to Carmel. I've been shooting videos on the Sonoma coast since Jan. I have playlists on my channel. It's typically less crowded than Monterey, Santa Cruz, and Half Moon Bay. Even less crowded going North from here. But, anyway, you can't lose on spectacular scenery on the Coast.
Did you say “trail fat map”? Is there a way to download maps and then use them without cell signal? I looked at the transcript but I still couldn’t figure it out.

Thanks Mitchell!

We agree!

Maybe with a younger dog that was very agile that might be possible but still a great hike to this point.
Great video, feeling another very wet winter, hope so, thanks much for the videos!!
I would be happy with a another wet winter for sure!

Hey Janet, Unfortunately we did not so this was filmed on Saturday.

nice one! Yes it is a scramble! Ropi lake is amazing!
I went to see Glen Alpine Falls and sprained my ankle, also got poison oak as a bonus 😢 Go hiking they say! But the waterfall was stunning! 😅
ahh. Sorry to hear that. Glad you still enjoyed the waterfall!

Good to know. Couldn’t agree more.
Adding this hike to my "Bucket List".
excellent!
Was there a few days ago and catch some ok size trout in this tiny streams. Still need to reach the top to get those brooks🎉
nice!
10:10 Y'know...this is the most unbelievable of shots. Where is the water coming from because it kind of looks like the top.
thanks mate!

That's 2hours from home but I'm long in the tooth. Damn, it's tempting.
hope you can go enjoy it!

Thanks for the comment! yes we hope to venture up to the lakes above soon!
Crazy you did that in a storm. I just backpacked to Ropi/beyond and coming down with a 40+ lbs pack was not fun ha.

There is an application called Fatmap. My understanding is that this application should work without cell signal.
@@tahoemountainlife Thank you so much 😊
Okay u video
Can I fly drone there ?
This waterfall is in the desolation wilderness so unfortunately you cannot fly drones here.
