    So my thoughts on the first floor bathroom... the tub looks 30s/40s... most kitchen had a butlers pantry and utility room off of them... some kitchens had all the stoves and appliances in other rooms... it would not surprise me that the kitchen had water in the bath area and later had a more modern sink put in the main kitchen... and when the house was broken into rentals, the second kitchen/utility room was turned into a bathroom... thats why the pocket door was boarded up... to make the back "new kitchen" room into a bedroom with a proper closet

      I agree. A lot of times, as the owners aged and could not use the stairs, they turned one or two of the downstairs rooms into a bedroom and a bath. I’ve seen that done many times in these older homes.

    I’m binge watching all your videos, and I really like your old house, and your hard work. You are both very charming and Maya is sweet. I subscribed to you so I can watch the whole process, I’m a big Victorian fan. So you know that tiny room at the front door was called the vestibule, in the old days you would open the first set of doors on the exterior, to let people know if you were accepting visitors. Someone would come calling with their calling card and knock on the inside door and the servant would meet them and take their card, they would then let them enter into the reception hall, where they would wait to see if you would receive them or not. While they were in the reception hall all the pocket doors to the other rooms would be closed. Those other rooms were the drawing room and the parlor and the dining room. There would have been a small room with a sink and cabinets between the dining room and the kitchen which was the butlers pantry, it seems as though yours is missing. I think the room you have chosen for your kitchen is actually the original dining room. I don’t seem to see your secondary set of stairs which would have been the servants stairs. In those days you would not want to see the servants in the formal rooms so they used their own stairs, and the maid would live on the third floor as you stated. All the rooms on the second floor were called chambers not bedrooms, the bedroom would be the really small rooms, that’s why the closet was shared between rooms as they were sitting rooms and dressing rooms. You may notice that the closets are very shallow and may not have hanger poles, because when the house was originally built the hanger was not yet invented and everyone hung their clothes on clothes hooks, they also had armoires to keep their clothes in so closets were not part of the original plans. The original house probably only had one bathroom and maybe a wc or water closet that would just have a toilet and possibly a sink. The reason the doorways are so high and the ceilings are so high is because heat rises and during those days you didn’t have air conditioning, you would open the upstairs windows and let the air flow up through the staircase to the downstairs where you would have the downstairs doors or windows opened and then the air would actually get pulled from downstairs to upstairs and act as natural air conditioning. The pocket doors were also used to close off unused rooms during the winter that you did not want to heat, and you would stay in the interior rooms where the coal burning fireplaces would be lit. Also the kitchen was the heart of the home and the housewife or servant had the job of always maintaining that the fire in the stove was lit, she would get up very early and heat the water to be used for baths in a tank on the stove and deliver it to the bathroom. A lot of work being a Victorian house wife and not as glamorous as one would expect, but they were very hardy dedicated hard working people that were extremely inventive and nothing went to waste, they recycled everything and when they made Sunday dinner they would use the leftovers all week as soups and stews and gravies. I’ll tell you anything else you want to know about Victorian living as I studied it very intensely as I have built a five foot by three foot 13 room three story Queen Anne Victorian dollhouse that I started collecting miniatures for since I was 17 years old. My house has had an investment of nearly $50,000 put into it and everything is authentic replicas of the period. Although I did one change, after I read about the horrible lives of the Victorians I updated the interiors to represent a vision of the house as it would have been seen in 1927 which is my favorite year in history. Sliced bread, votes for women, Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight and Babe Ruth’s home run records were all done in 1927 . And it was a time when kitchens were updated with so many time saving appliances as would give the housewife so much time to be a flapper and lounge the day away, hooray for Women’s rights!. Nice chatting with you and I intend to follow you for as long as you have your channel going. I’m ChuckandMax, Chuck is me and Max is my Chinese crested service dog who has traveled with me internationally all over the world, has his own passport and international chip. He’s 10 years old now and is all black and silver faced who wears designer cardigans and fancy rhinestone collars, he only weighs 14 pounds and is the calmest sweetest boy ever, but he thinks he is a ferocious dragon that is here to protect me from evil spirits, nobody is allowed to come near me unless Max gives them permission, that’s one of his main functions to help me with my disability. He has other functions he performs as well to keep me motivated and active and keeps me from having heart attacks. Well hope you enjoyed that intro. Now you know us too.

    Double parlors were more common when the house was built -- my guess is the room you're making the kitchen was the original dining room. I'm thinking the weird bathroom off the original kitchen could have been a pantry -- which makes a bit more sense going to the back door/basement.

    • @togdochroise
      @togdochroise 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I so ache to live in a Victorian-style home; the homes of today are no match to those built in the 1800s and early 1900s; there is absolutely no comparison to the character and craftsmanship of a Victorian home. Thank you for another interesting vlog. Have you tried to find out anything about the history of the house? Perhaps your downstairs bathroom used to be the pantry or servant's room where the china, glass, table linen, cutlery and other utensils were kept. Perhaps there was a butler's sink, hence the water pipe. There is also the dumbwaiter and a mail box, coal storage in a basement. All close together. People kept servants in those days after all. The room next to the kitchen could have been the breakfast room or "morning room". The attic rooms were usually occupied by staying servants. Would be nice to go back in a time machine to see how it was then.

    Here's my theory. The tile and tub look like they are from the 30's. I had the exact same tile and a similar tub in the house I grew up in. I am guessing that was a butler's pantry because of the pie safe, dumb waiter, milk hatch and exterior entrance door.

The new bath appears to be where the original door was... I don't see where it comes up.. I think the little room which is going to be the other bedrooms bath, was originally a landing for the rear staircase

      I guess that's what's usually done. We have always appreciated a downstairs shower as we have dogs that tend to roll in the mud and a place to hose them off right near the back entry is such a plus! We also tend to do things that make us quite dirty... haha. Watching relatives struggle at the end of their lives with getting up stairs has made us hope this design might make staying in the home as we continue to age, a little bit easier. Thanks for the comments Marilyn! Keep 'em coming!

    There may have been a front and back parlor. There were probably maids to cook and serve food, so the kitchen may not have been situated as would be now.

      That makes sense ... with so many remodeling layers it's like an archeological site.

    Could the bathroom have been the kitchen?

    The first floor bathroom was originally the butlers pantry off the kitchen and I would have a sink in it.
