  • (19 Jun 2012) Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi celebrated her 67th birthday on Tuesday, at the start of a week-long visit to Britain.
Suu Kyi spent the afternoon in the university city of Oxford, where she studied in the 1960s and later lived for many years with her late husband, Michael Aris, and their two sons.
She was greeted by Oxford University Chancellor Chris Patten and a crowd of well-wishers, who burst into a rendition of "Happy Birthday."
Trip organisers said she planned to celebrate her birthday privately with family and friends on Tuesday evening.
On Wednesday, Oxford University will present her with an honorary degree that it awarded in 1993 but that she was not free to collect.
Earlier on Tuesday Suu Kyi attended a debate at the London School of Economics, on how Myanmar can move to the rule of law, a reminder of the tough road ahead for the leader of the Southeast Asian country's reform movement.
Suu Kyi, who is on her first overseas trip since 1988, received a standing ovation as she took the stage during the panel discussion.
Suu Kyi has a long association with Britain, the former colonial ruler of the then Burma, but she has not visited for 24 years.
Suu Kyi was kept under house arrest by Myanmar's rulers for 15 years, and was freed in 2010.
She decided to visit Europe after the Myanmar government assured her that she will not be blocked from returning home.

Is Buddhism for genocide? If you are a buddhist then you believe in the panchasila and believe in not killing a life no matter what. Supporting Suu Kyi is supporting genocide, rape, stealing and also lying about her crime and this means that your support the breaking of the panchasila. Shame on you for bringing the Buddha' name into this.

Thank you Oxford for taking away Su kyi's award. You showed the integrity and moral standard you had. That's why it is the top University of the world. Respect from Bangladesh.

We must be very careful when trusting a person who was brought up under military rule that they actually understand civil and human rights, and rule of law, before making them Nobel Peace Laureate.
Aung San Suu Kyi is powerless in a country still run by military rule.
For the past few years, Aung San has been downplaying a genocide that led an entire ethnicity to flee their country and calling it an internal conflict.
Aung San has been downplaying the numbers of Rohingya who fled their country.
Aung San has been downplaying the damages her armed forces have made to Rohingya's villages from burning them down to ashes, rape, murder and torture.
Aung San has been promising investigations but how many of her armed forces and high-ranking officers have been actually tried and sentenced for their crimes or did they mostly get exonerated or pardoned?
Aung San isn't actually aware of the plight of her people.
Aung San fear the military of her country and has no power over them.
Aung San might actually be a conspirator in this in order for her to please the military generals and gain their trust to secure more her office and authority. Unfortunately this how things go in third world countries.
