It was explained to me at the Tandy store that when you buy tools, take a close look at the stamp/tool end. Some cheaper manufacturers will weld on the stamp, they may use cheaper steel, and the stamp themselves may not be as sharp to provide a nice impression; check out knurling, if there is not enough, your hands may slip down and if the diameter is too small it may be too tiring to hold on to. Also, considering how many times you will hammer on it, you'll want to make sure it doesn't bend or break in the middle of your project. Barry King tools are just better -- expensive, yes, but just better! :)

Anywhere other than the belly will work fine. For me, the back and butt typically get used in belt and strap goods so things like wallets wind up coming from the shoulder.

Thanks Joe. Where in the hide do you stop for belt blanks? How many blanks would you get from that hide?
I average about 12 blanks per side. Some only 10 and occasionally up to 15. I stop before it gets “flanky” or soft down towards the belly.

If you are in the U.S., I got a similar one at Home Depot. Lowes should also have it.
