I ran into Larry Kramer on the street in the Village in 2010. I thanked him for being the person who saved millions, sadly, not several friends of mine. I asked him if I could interview him, he was writing his final book at that time. He gave me his email, we traded kind words, and I didn’t push it. I don’t regret it, except for the fact that I just wanted to talk with him, rather, listen to him. But this interview is wonderful. I saw him again 4 years later, said hello, he wasn’t well, but he seemed to remember me. He’s an unheralded hero who should never ever be forgotten. We’ll remember this Trump shithead in 100 years. We need to remember Larry Kramer. We must. He should be studied at Universities around the world. Forever.
Absolutely agree with that: it should be taught in school. And by other human rights mivements too... The people i met at act up in the early 90s (as i was helping a friend to carry paper people gave us to help spare office expanses and pay the phone bills!) are still the examples i think about when i m about to give up hope in humanity. I hope after covid experience, more people will realize the incredible amount of courage efficiency and dignity they put together to go through that hell. Impressive for all human beings, beyond words...except love and pride. Thank u for being proofs of what humanity can mean. Really deep respect forever.
I like Larry Kramer. He stood up when nobody else would, he fought when nobody else had the courage to do so, he found a way when there was literally no way out.
I saw "The Normal Heart" in movie form. Best gay-themed movie I've seen. And that's after i saw "Philadelphia" which is still one of my favorites. It took me a while to put the pieces together on who Ned's character (played by Mark Ruffalo) represented. I looked a little further into it because of a random clip I saw of Larry Kramer's "Plague" rant (when he shut everybody up who was arguing back and forth) and the vocal cadence sounded too similar to ignore. When I found out it was Larry Kramer who was behind the whole thing, as well as Larry being represented by Ned's character, I had a "wow" moment. To know that this wasn't just a character, but a real person who did all that fighting, was very sobering. It made the movie's story even better for me. I have to thank Larry for everything he's done. It would be rude not to talk about him, even a little. Milk was one guy, but Kramer is another whose work I will gladly respect and look further into. I'm glad he's still alive to tell his story.
Michael McLaughlin I guess I'm supposed to agree with him too or risk being thrown out of the gay "community". It wasn't the greatest. Yeah, it was straight actors playing as gay characters...and sure, it was a "gay rights" narrative put into a movie. (And I'm certain Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington are all of a sudden the worst actors to ever get into the industry) But it's a favorite for me among all the stereotypical "random hookup" style of gay themed movies. (Though I like plenty of those as well) So when it comes to his opinion on a movie, I don't really care. But when it comes to what he did to wake up the gay "community" to address apathetic politicians and their careless ways of handling an epidemic that not only affected, but shook the gay "community" to the core--I'll weigh that more heavily than his opinion on a movie. I'll also pay attention to the fact that he was excommunicated from a major gay rights movement for apparently being too revolutionary (and then pretty much buried)...Then after so many mentions of Dan Savage, "The Normal Heart" was made and suddenly everyone cares about Larry again? I'll tell ya what--Instead of throwing shade on me for enjoying a movie that you (and a gay rights leader) didn't, why don't you list some titles of some movies you (or Larry Kramer) did like? Or maybe some great books? Nope, you won't do that, because you just want to shame people who are not like you because you rank so high in the gay "community." Nothing like tearing someone else down to build yourself up. Bravo, dude. Now I have one more question for you: Were you trolling or being honest?...On second thought, don't answer that. That's none of my business. Good day, sir.
Mr. Kramer is responsible for saving millions of lives, and forcing Dr. Anthony Fauci to face his shortcomings so that he can help us now. God bless Larry Kramer, eternally. Thank you for all of your influence, courage, and life, Sir.
The way some young ACT-UP members poorly reacted to Larry's speech at the Queer March in 2019, reminded me exactly of how gay men reacted to him in 1985. I don't think we've learned very much about taking responsibility for our bodies and our health. Sad to say. RIP hero.
Yes, there was a lot of people who felt the ''government'' was to blame when the power to change was in their own hands. It reminds me of the maxim that freedom requires responsibility.
By "our bodies," are you speaking as a gay man? Just checking. Promiscuity on the level of what was happening in 1980 and what some people (on Grindr) still get up to isn't healthy for anyone, but we should be wary of outsiders whose interest in this is only to rubbish legitimate demands. TGP109^ should be discounted as someone expressing false concern. They're trying to defend society's response to AIDS when said society went about obstructing Larry Kramer even when his goals were specifically to warn gay men to dial back the number of partners and to practice safe sex. At other times homophobia starved the CDC of the resources it needed to ascertain the cause of AIDS, and, still, at other times it censored AIDS education material targeting gay men. I could go on and on, but homophobia (in the media, institutions, government, business etc.) absolutely did contribute dramatically to the problem. This included but was not limited to cultivating conditions that incentivized promiscuity.
I think Mister Katz should have interrupted a bit more and kept Larrys` vast history narrative to a p[oint per question. Its very difficult to follow this.
At least Kramer was honest about how AIDS came about due to all the promiscuity among gay men in the 60's, 70's and 80's. No one wanted the party to end. He and Randy Shilts, while often blaming the wrong people, could see that gay men also had to take responsibility.
"often blaming the wrong people" Are you kidding me?! Did you miss the part where he was denied even the ability to rent office space for GMHC? This organization existed largely for the purpose of spreading the word about AIDS and warning gay men to dial it back, and these people you say are blameless prevented them from doing even this! This is like banning drug education in schools (preventing even volunteers from doing it for free) and then complaining that kids keep trying out heroin. Maybe the kids should know better *in spite* of you, but you still made it worse and have absolutely no business complaining about a problem you willingly exacerbated. Other things include underfunding AIDS research such that it took years for them to identify the cause, media refusing to report on a "gay disease" until "innocent" heterosexual heroin users started getting it, *censoring* AIDS education campaigns that targeted gay men, spreading misinformation about AIDS in order to discourage productive work on the disease and to promote the ostracization of victims. All this time, homophobic elements did sh1t all to promote safer practices among gay men, like limiting sexual partners and using protection. As a matter of fact, advice against rampant promiscuity and unprotected sex was the kind of thing they censored. Having already written off gay men, they didn't genuinely mind that these pariahs engaged in some unhealthy behaviors. To the extent they were interested in this, it was only to demonize gay people.

DDGILLIYT Just a demonstration of what a vile book the bible is. Another reason to dismiss it. If you serious believe what it says then I guess you protest tattoo parlours and seafood restaurants. After all the bible calls them sins too. Or are you yet another in a long line of religious hypocrites?
I’m Christian, I know the Bible has awful things in it. I also believe that it has good things in it. The majority of the Lutheran religion (With the exemption of the Missouri synod) believes in ordaining gay pastors and I have met multiple gay camp counselors. Of course there are crazy people in my religion but I don’t condone that and people in church to stop it. When I was confirmed I said in my faith statement that I believe God is love. It does not matter who that love is between.
Try to be as brave as that man then come back. We ll know if u did, because if u just try, u ll just be sooo ashamed of ur words here. And if u don t, just have the good respectful idea to shut up on what u don t even know the beginning of: humanity and courage.
you have a singular A in front of the plural word Women Sex is between a man and his multiple wives.??? Don’t project your BS onto us We ain’t buying it.

5/27/2020 Rest well Larry Kramer 🕊️😢🙏🏾. Thank you for the fight against AIDS. 💔
I like Larry Kramer. He stood up when nobody else would, he fought when nobody else had the courage to do so, he found a way when there was literally no way out.
Mr Kramer a genuine authentic American hero. Courageous fearless selfless
I love this man, he is so refreshingly honest
No one should interrupt Larry Kramer, Scott. Most of that audience is ALIVE today because of him.

the 2 or 3 protein HIV test is not accurate - vaccinations, steroids, drug use and pregnancy can all cause positive hiv test results - hivquestions
You are a fool.

Please note that the majority of AIDS deaths worldwide were heterosexuals.
