    So scary! We crossed this bridge in a class A motorhome and there were semis going the other way. So narrow. A very scary experience.

    COOL! I have driven across this bridge many times when going to good ol' St Luey! - I'd take "short cut" from interstate at Paducah KY - go thru Wickliffe....many times following a big rig- always amazed at how they could handle the very narrow roadway.....thanks for posting (especially from a trucker's view!)

      I came up Rt 51 out of Union City TN thru Wickliffe across the Ohio River bridge into Cairo, IL, to load soy bean products there.

    I went over these bridges back in 02 in a big truck with my dad. I can't believe it was that long ego, but this vid brought it all back to me!

    I've never been to Cairo. These old, narrow laned bridges make for an interesting crossing!

    Pretty cool.
    When I was in college in 2005, and raced bikes, we traveled to Murray, KY for a race (near Land Between the Lakes). We came in from Bowling Green so never went that far west, but I didn't realize how big the Ohio River was right before meeting the Mississippi River.

      The Ohio is at it's widest here. Remember-just a few miles upstream, the Ohio is joined by the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, the 2nd and 3rd most substantial rivers east of the Mississippi; the Ohio being the most substantial.

      It is a scary looking old bridge. How old is it? How well maintained is it?

    I love this video. My Mom and I recently drove to Branson, Missouri and Google maps took us on a route over this bridge. I researched it afterwards and everything I look at says that the bridge is closed from March 2015 until March of 2016. I am hoping that they finished the repairs early as I drove across it in December 2015. It was quite a surprise - first driving over the Ohio River and seeing this bridge in the distance, then going around a curve and over it! I was in a VW Golf - so I, thankfully, didn't get the view OVER the railings that you get from a truck. I think I may have put a dent in my steering wheel, but I wouldn't trade the experience for anything (although, we took the southern route home where we crossed the River on an Interstate in Memphis :).

    I drove over this bridge the very first night i started driving a semi truck after getting my CDL. It was about 1 in the morning, super dark which made it seem even more narrow, and the way the road curves sharply to the right at the end had me panicking thinking I was gonna hit my trailer on the guard rail.

    Done that many times in a hopper on the way to Cairo, IL. Crossed the other bridge from Cairo into Mo. across the Mississippi. Both very narrow and rickety. Are they still there? The Miss. bridge into Mo. was closed for awhile. Drivers going that way had to go up through Cairo to I 57 and south.

      As far as I know, they are both still there.

    I live on the upper Ohio and have ventured that far south. I have only been as far south on 7 and the river as Marietta, Parkersburg area. That's cool where the Muskingdom dumps into the Ohio. I would like to see where the Ohio dumps into the Mississippi in person.

    @thechoosendude Thanks. I believe this is the widest the river gets. This crossing is about a half mile before it merges with the Mississippi River which is on the right side of the video as I'm crossing the bridge (off screen of course).

    I'm following GPS and it takes me to Cairo 1st of all in the middle of the night which freaks me out a little bit. I prayed that my car would not break down haha.. Then the next thing you know I'm on this bridge and it just kept going and going and even once we're past the metal we're still on that concrete bridge. I prayed the whole time. All I could think of is, this will be the moment the fault line breaks underneath of us. Then you go into a Forrest area...I had NO clue where I was so I just kept going 😄 and I made it to Huntingdon TN...finally

    You got lucky with no
    semi traffic coming the other way, scared the hell out of me my one and only time on that bridge with trucks coming the other way, never again.

    If you think this is tight, try the other one that crosses the Mississippi. I've touched mirrors more than once on it. (I go over both five nights a week, twice.)

    • @chrisoatsvall3813
      @chrisoatsvall3813 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup I have lost a couple of mirrors on the other one.

    • @walkerwalker6728
      @walkerwalker6728 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, mirror swapping is quite common on that bridge

    • @ampatriot6242
      @ampatriot6242 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can attest. Except I never lost a mirror. Very tight!! Both bridges are the same. Try crossing the one coming out of Clinton, Iowa into Illinois. Almost the same.

    This video was shot almost a year and a half ago and it documents my trip over the Cairo Ohio River Bridge. Please note I didn't hold the camera as it was sitting on the dashboard the whole time. This cantilevered bridge spans the Ohio River just before it merges with the Mississippi River and connects the towns of Cairo, Illinois with Wickliffe, Kentucky.

    Many 100k+ lb trucks have crossed this bridge as it the way around the scales. Believe there’s a weight limit on it now but it’s not gonna fall in or anything.

      To be honest, it was really nerve-racking the first few times as there isn't much room to maneuver when meeting oncoming traffic. There are two lanes, one for each direction, but it is really close when meeting another truck going the other way.
