This first aired in America in 1967. I probably started watching it two years later. This is still probably the most exciting and best cartoon theme song ever.
I loved this show as a kid. Before VCR's you only had reruns... and if they didn't rerun the show all you could do is hope it would return to TV. It's great all the shows you can find on the internet, especially TH-cam. Brings back memories, time show does fly.
My Dad watched this as a kid back in the 70's and I watched the re-runs back in the 90's. I think when we saw the movie in theaters a couple years ago, we shared something.

Speed Racer was my favorite as a kid. Used to fight my sister who wanted to watch The Flintstones which was on at the same time. She didn't know what was good for her. Seriously, you can't accelerate or brake a 4-ton vehicle with your feet.
I wish some one would put this back on TV!!! I watched it on channel 39 when I was little. I finely got to see the movie last night on TNT. John Goodman did a Great POPS! I like the kid that played Spridel also. Good Movie!
I remember seeing Speed Racer in the South... Weekdays at 2(3 Eastern) on WTCG/17(now TBS) when I lived in New Iberia(La.); and then at 3:00 on WGNO/26 when I lived in New Orleans.
Loved the tv series; loved the movie. I believe the cartoon was the very first time "Bullet Time" was used, something the Wachowski Brothers made famous in the Matrix. View from exactly one minute into this opening theme song, when he leaps out of the Mach 5 and the "camera" rotates around his heroic stance with the car behind him. They replicated this in the movie at the end of the Togasa Team race. Very cool.
dude i loved this show when i was a kid. i used to run down the hall at school and on the playground when i was in like 2nd grade screaming the themesong at the top of my lungs... ahh, memories

I wonder if the Wachowski brothers got their freeze-time rotation idea from watching Speed Racer as young kids. Born in 1965 and '67, their age would be right. It was a brilliantly original cartoon!
Hey meerkat you have to remember this was before everything was PC. This is the best cartoon of all time in my opinion. I saw the movie last night and I loved it. I think only the die hard Speed Racer fans will enjoy it.
if your a Race Fan or not, a Speed Racer fan or not, a Anime fan or not, one thing is for sure, the first part of this intro will ALWAYS be in your head just the sound of the engine revving up got your blood pumping
I'll always have a soft spot for this show, even now its good old-school anime fun. The live-action movie was fantastic too. In fact it made me want to watch this show all over again. The Live-action movie was miles better than all of the cartoon remakes, even the anime remake that used to come on Nickelodeon.
I believe that Peter Fernandez (the voice of Speed Racer) wrote the song as well as producing the show, writing it, and voicing several of the characters.
A wonderful blast from my past.! Used to watch speed and sing that song everyday after school! Go Speed Racer Go! By the way, FYI: Speed was served a 20 year to life sentence for killing that poor guy but got off after 10 years for good behaviour! He now lives in Southern California and works part time at the local Walmart.

Yes, it is true ! It was in the early 70´s and I used to watch it with a school-mate of mine. Then, one afternoon, we both sat in front of the tv, the station announced that the series is stopped for it´s offensive content. That really sucked !!!

That little animated camera move on SR and the car at the end was no piece of cake in the '60s. Hats off to the animator and assistants.

A lot of kids in college now know it well. It had a good run in the late 90's so we got to see this classic.

That's was actually a pretty accurate depection of race car explosions at the time. The 1964 Indy 500 had one that looked like a bomb went off.

This series was stopped in Germany after two or three parts of it had been broadcasted. I still remember how disappointed we kids have been for that.
