Whether it's a VC-10 or an Ilyushin il-62, a T-tail with 4 engines hanging side-by-side off the back end has such an aggressive look for a passenger plane, the VC-10 especially. I'd love to see today's technology adapted to this design.
Don't mention the Russians, they just copied it like Concordski! This is an RAF VC10, you can tell from the zig zag go fast stripe (& it did!) & there's a small RAF winged logo on the fuselage. I probably flew on this one in the 1970s being in the Army, this one has been converted for inflight refueling & dates from the Millennium.
@@seltaeb9691The Il-62 and VC-10 have more differences than similarities. Look not at the design, but at the technical characteristics and the internal structure.
As a boy I flew many times between USA and UK on Boeing 707s and DC 8s. Then came my first flight on a BOAC Super VC 10. From the airport window it looked like Sci-fi, just BEAUTIFUL. Then we got in and it was so much nicer than what we were used to. Then we accelerated and took off and we were amazed. This was like going from a School Bus (707 and DC 8) to a Ferrari. VC 10s were the best airliners of the time, and are still my favourite.
I was lucky enough in the early 70's to fly on one of these when B.O.A.C., pre-cursor to British Airways, flew one from Kingston Jamaica's Norman Manley International airport. We were traveling from Kingston to New York JFK airport.
4 x Rolls Royce Conway's wonderful sound. My favourite aircraft as a child living near Manchester Airport and going plane spotting, great memories thanks for uploading
Great footage. I would have loved to have seen one in PanAm or TWA markings. The 707 eliminated that but it is a great looking airplane and both crews and passengers loved it. Bean counters, not so much.
I worked at LAX (for JAL) from 1971 until 1980 and the VC-10 was, perhaps, my favorite plane. I would often take a company pickup (authorized within the A/P) and drive down the service road next to 24L (the normal departure runway for int'l flights at that time) and stand next to the truck to watch the VC-10's takeoff. The motors had a unique sound ~ they seemed to crackle rather than roar at takeoff thrust.
Love this plane . Sorry the Brits lost out on so many things , even they were ahead in many.I love England and the Queen and have the highest respect .I´m not English
Went to the gulf in one of these, going by the stats it's a fast plane, but it took 7 and a half hours to get from cyprus to raf marham. And you had to sit facing backwards. I understand the nostalgia though, the sound and smell of kerosene, id love to be 25 again
They were so beautiful in BOAC livery: elegant and classy. I remember during take-off the VC10 would sit on its rear end with the nose in the air and its 4 RR Conway engines screaming at full throttle down the runway for quite a while before it eventually lifted. The pilot advised passengers over the intercom that this was a feature of the plane in case people started panicking "Why isn't this thing taking off? We're all gonna die!"
This British icon we built and designed the most eligant aircraft in the world. And was never given. The recognition we deserved. By the rest of. The world. And this was one of them. Our. VC 10. Thanks to all our engernering and Designers.. And the lovely vidio.
Like Jaguar cars ,this plane was sheer visual perfection only Brits seem capable of.I would say domestic cats were as well, but I don't know if they were designed in the UK.
@purplefurball. I agree, although I think the VC10 would have been a better platform for a maritime patrol aircraft, instead of the Comet/Nimrod development. It's naturally long range (5000nm+) and larger cabin would have been beneficial (the Nimrod achieves it's range by using a large collection of extra fuel tanks). The larger cabin would give more room for the mission system workstations and crew rest facilities. Fleet commonality (with the tankers) would be a huge benefit too.
Perhaps but the VC 10 tanker did not come into service until the very early 80's when commercial airframes were available after airline retirement so commonality would have only occurred if a tanker version of the VC10 had been developed at the same time as a maritime VC10 when the Nimrod started development in the mid 60's
@AirCanada04 The tu144 ,again, is not a copy of the concorde. Tupolev 144, was in fact, a copy of its own, the T4 bomber, having the same nose and engine design. It looked more like a passenger version of the T4 bomber than the concorde. I would say the only copy was the 4 engine placement at the back. However, the wing design, the fuselauge and other parts were completely different. The cockpit and gear design would be different. The VC 10 may have inspired them, but they didnt copy.

@av21031 Oh ok. I saw one video where the 62 just had troubles. But I also have no idea about the circumstances. Might be a crazy high density altitude at that airport that cut the performance short... I think those four tail mounted engines are quite impressive, if they weren't so loud...
You know, I see those quite alot in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the International airport but I always thought those were like the Russian built aircraft by seeing the dual engine mounts on either side. Like a Illyshin or something along like that variation of the Russian aircraft. (I apologize for the mispelling)
It's not. I've seen new A330-300s release dark soot from the engines. It really depends on the fuel used. Learn this from refueling a car. It has the same principle.
I agree. Saw a polished aluminum vc10 on a poster of RAF aircraft and thought it the most beautiful airliner out of 60 or so. That's how I ended up here
787 and 747-8 are some of the best looking aircraft. When you get up close you notice subtleties that you don't see from distance, particular in how clean and sleek they are. When you walk around and under neath them, the attention to detail in aerodynamics and making a sleek bird comes into picture. They should replace the 4 of those engines with a pair of GE Nx engines from the 747-8, substantially increase performance while reducing fuel burn.
“They should replace the 4 of those engines with a pair of GE Nx engines from the 747-8, substantially increase performance while reducing fuel burn.” Not to mention GREATLY reducing emissions.
Oh dear Lord. If I die tonight, I die happy that I've seen this vid. This wonderful, amazing, energetic little plane was and will forever be my favourite. Thank you to whoever posted this! x
I flew on them in the 1970s courtesy of the RAF & yes I felt it was originally a fighter jet & someone upscaled it! It got so copied everywhere, but this is the original & best. Landings & takeoffs were so smooth. I flew on easyJet for first time this year & it landed like a tank.

Beautiful big beastie. One of my favourites along with the DC8 & 10, B727 and the Comet. Today's aircraft seem so bland in appearance when compared to the classics. Oh, and how the frig would you think this is an animation @itsmegp46?? Stay away from the drugs dude!
How the hell did you know that was going to be there? My favourite airliner of all time! Sends shivers down my spine when I think of the times I was at Ringway in the late '60s and early '70 watching from the spectator terracing on the piers and on top of the terminal building. The smell of the kerosene!! Brilliant!
If I had my own aircraft company (starting in the future) I would produce the Vickers VC-10 again so that thing could still fly. I would also rebuild other planes, like the DC-10, Boeing 727, etc.
I've said it before and I'll say it once again: the VC-10 is a Supermodel or Miss Universe among jet airliners. And She sings, too - amazing, nice Conway engine sound! Thanks for Sharing!
Awesome aircraft, and video. How did you ever get so close! It's definitely loud. Louder than the Tu-154m or DC-10 as far as commercial aircrafts go, though those had a sweeter spoolup, maybe.

What a great video. Good quality and no distracting music.
The VC10 was a beautiful aircraft.✈❤💙✈
I flew in one of these in 1968. BOAC from London to NY. Great plane!!!
Lucky you!
I never even saw one fly in person.

Beautiful British airliner; gracefull and elegant too.
Damn! This plane is a BEAST! The noise can easily make us feel the power that engines have! haha really great vid.

I flew in this very plane as an Air Cadet in 1972!
This engineering marvel should be revived with all the modern gizmos and efficient engines!
xv107 was my private taxi in the 70's went all over the place on it. still love it xx
Great footage.
I would have loved to have seen one in PanAm or TWA markings.
The 707 eliminated that but it is a great looking airplane and both crews and passengers loved it.
Bean counters, not so much.
That's one beautiful aircraft... it looks even more appealing in RAF livery than airline colours of the era. Thanks for uploading!
Best livery was BOAC with a plain navy tail and gold speedbird. Simply stunning and so classy!
I still remember the crackle and thunder as these flew over head as a kid. Incredible.
