Contrary to popular belief, the Eurovision Song Contest is NOT just for Europe. It gets its name from Eurovision, the television company that created it in the 1950s. Entry to the contest is for any FULL member of the European Broadcasting Union and ASSOCiATE members thereof. This means that apart from European countries, it is ALSO open to ALL African countries along the Mediterranean coast (and much of the rest of Africa,) much of Asia (including China and Japan,) New Zealand and Australia, much of South America and even Canada and the US. Basically, almost 2/3 of the countries in the world COULD take part if they so chose to do - most do not because of the cost of entering and the cost of hosting should they win.
only full members have automatic access to enter, and only countries in the European Broadcasting Area can be full members. Probably the most unexpected country that could in theory enter if they wanted is Saudi-Arabia. Countries like China, USA, etc. can't just enter, they would have to be specifically invited, like what is happening with Australia.
Old Info - Sweden won 2023, so now there is a tie between Ireland and Sweden, both co untries have seven wins, of which two of the winning songs sung by the same artist (Ireland: Johnny Logan) (Sweden: Loreen)
Another thing that you have probably heard of that became internationally famous is 'Riverdance', which was the interval entertainment in 1994; it turned Irish dancing into a mainstream global phenomenon, along with one of its stars Michael Flatley, who created 'Lord of the Dance'. I vividly remember watching it as a child, it was truly impactful and impressive - bearing in mind that most of us had never seen anything quite like it before.

The 2003 uk entry, the woman had a red dress and the guy had a white shirt and spiky hair, the reason why they sounded bad is they had earpiece & microphone issues and couldn't hear properly and so had sounding issues, it wasn't cause they couldn't sing, as i heard them in semi finals to pick the song that they sang and they sounded good vocally. The first LGBT song winner was " Nous les amoureux" in 1961. The lyrics were written in such a way that everyone thought they were about heterosexual love even though the authors later admitted that it was about two men. Of course, they had to wait for mentalities to advance because, in 1961, how can I say..... Jean-Claude Pascal, the singer, also came out of the closet much later.😊

You are not allowed to vote for your own country. Mostly the country that wins host next years contest unless they choose not to if they for example can't affort it(Israel won 2 years in a row in 1978 and 1979 but couldn't affort to host in 1980 so The Netherlands did instead) and if the EBU decide like with Ukraine in 2023 where for safety reasons because of the war the 2nd place from 2022 The UK held the contest but chose to co-host with Ukraine in Liverpool, so it was both english and ukrainian hosts and both english and ukrainian interval acts(acts performing when the voting takes place/the voting is counted). The countries to win the most is sweden(won their 7th time in 2023)and ireland who have also won 7 times, and the 2nd place joined is UK, The Netherlands, France and Luxembourg I think with 5 wins, 3rd Israel with 4 wins, and 4th is Norway, Italy, Ukraine, and my country Denmark to have won 3 times.
Ireland has never won Eurovision singing their native language - therefore ABBA is not the first representative to not sing in their own language. Ireland never has sang in their native language. Irish is still spoken to this day and there are even some ppl in Ireland who only know how to speak Irish. And yes Ireland has had Irish songs up for application to the contest.
The reason you have the intro videos is because all of the acts are performing on the same stage so they need a few minutes to clear out the previous act and set up for the next act, I think you would love Eurovision if you watched it live, it's crazy
Fun fact: Have you ever heard of Riverdance? An Irish dance troupe that was a huge, world-wide success in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They had their big break in 1994, when Ireland hosted Eurovision AGAIN in Dublin. They gave a 7-minute performance during the interval, after all the songs had been performed and voting was going on. Nobody really remembers the winning song or artist, but Riverdance was an absolute sensation!
eurovision is at least for me something that i like so much i just love to see all the different countries preform and tbh a lot of people who watch eurovion hangout and like do a party and watch it togheter !its really fun
Eurovision is not only a song contest. It was set up as a European wide television service, for news etc. The Song Contest is just the most famous use of the service, the others gradually falling away & little used.
The best thing about Eurovision is the gentle mocking of each countries songs, and or intro videos by our UK host on VO. It used to be the late, great broadcaster Terry Wogan (Irish) and now we have Graham Norton, also Irish, who is a perfect successor, also gently mocking of any entries that deserve a light mockery. Nothing offensive, just calling out weirdness, like "this man seems to be stuck in a spiders web, seems like a very unfortunate situation to be in, but what do I know". But he gives credit where it's due for a good song/staging/performance.

Some countries write songs specifically for the Eurovision Song Contest, but most artists simply do their stuff, participate in national festivals, and end up going to Eurovision or not. Festivals are a way for artists to promote their art, regardless of the results
Just a note. The competing countries aren’t allowed to vote for themselves. Although there is a junior Eurovision now for under 14s and they can. The American Song contest was held over 6 weeks, one show a week, whereas the Eurovision is 2 semi finials and the grand final all held within a week.
Tell ya what, we'll invite America to the Eurovision when you invite the rest of the world to your, ahem, (not)World Series sporting event. Baseball I believe?
Hey btw, you can also vote for the songs in eurovision and will be placed in a rest of the world vote which gets counted equal to one country’s televotes
I get the not wanting arts to be "competitive" but keeping the origins of the Eurovision Song Contest in mind, I think it's a good tradition to have a friendly rivalry about writing and performing songs to remind ourselves what the alternative would be (A Europe at war).
That's exactly what they did two years ago. Sadly, the show didn't catch on. I enjoyed the show, there were some bangers there so although they seem to have gone back to the drawing board as there was no ASC this year, they are probably re-evaluating their approach to the concept and I hope they'll return with a more solid approach either this year or next year.
They had an american song contest in 2022 I think, but the setup was a bit more like American idol with cut to commercial breaks etc but they had the Eurovision rule of that it had to be an all new original song, and there was 5 rounds/semifinals or more I think before the finale because of the many states and teritories compeeting and because each round and also the finale was not longer than 1 h 30 min if I remember correctly, because I guess longer time would be too much for American viewers or some american rule? I can only guess. The hosts was Snoop Dogg and Kelly Clarkson. The winner was a young woman half american half korean singing a kpop inspired song. I don't remember which state she represented. I don't know if it was not that big of a succes since they haven't continued it. Maybe it lacked some of the things/atmosphere that made Eurovision so special, at least it felt like it a bit when I watched it, but nice try.
The winning song was Wonderland by AleXa. Texas sent Grant Knoche... who has continued to release some great tunes and seems to appear on my Facebook feed several times a week.
I can't get over the fact that you thought a competition that's been going on for the past 70 years wasn't real and was just a joke.... 😂😂 That's hilarious! 🤣
Some acts who didn't win, went on be one hit wonders, because their songs were so unusual. The biggest controversy of the Eurovision Song Contest was Spain under Franco cheating to win, the year Cliff Richard competed with Congratulations. The winning song from Spain was only a minor hit, but Congratulations written by two well known British pop song writers of that era, became such a big international hit, that was so big, those greetings cards with sound chips in play it. One of the years that Ireland hosted the show, after winning the contest the year before, featured the first television appearance of Riverdance, as a showcase act, that is the stage entertainment, but not in the competition.
You can't vote for your own country's entry. Eurovision is the biggest music contest in the World and attracts one of the biggest global audiences in television. The US could join. You don't have to be European. A US network would just need to join the European Broadcasting Union. Several countries outside of Europe, eg, Israel and Australia, compete. Israel has actually won it 4 times. There's been talk of the US joining but most Europeans are opposed. It's thought that America would take it too seriously, too competitively and wouldn't be into, or get, all the camp, irony, innuendo and tongue-in-cheek nature of the contest. A lot of country's don't take it too seriously. The UK, amusical superpower outside of Eurovision, hasn't taken it seriously since about 1980, sending a host of sub-par, novelty and joke acts and our presenters annoying the rest of Europe by just taking the piss out of the whole thing. However the overall quality of music has improved in recent years, so the UK has started to take it a bit more seriously again, though still not entirely so. The UK would have won again in 2022, if not for the war in Ukraine massively skewing the public vote. The UK won the jury's vote though and ended up coming 2nd for the 16th time! :) We also have 5 wins. Making us pretty successful! :) The political voting has become ridiculous though, making it quite hard for Western European countries to win. Scandinavian countries all vote for each other. Ditto the Balkans. Ditto Eastern Europe. The most blatant of all is Cyprus giving maximum points to Greece, every single year! Greece always gives high marks to Cyprus in return, often maximum marks. Britain hasn't done so well in recent years, thanks to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Brexit and being perceived to be not taking it seriously at all. I suppose it's fair to ask why a country so dominant in popular music doesn't send decent acts, performing decent songs. They have a point. The problem is that, for a British act to enter Eurovision and take it seriously, they'd lose all credibility, in the UK at least. We'll never see Radiohead, Adele, Ed Sheeran or Ren in Eurovision. Just as in the past we never saw The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Kate Bush, George Michael, Amy Winehouse, Oasis etc etc. Though Elton John did enter one year, coming, you guessed it... 2nd! :) It's partly due to coming 2nd so many times, usually with a song that outsells the winner, in the real World and charts much higher, that started the change in attitude from the UK. I suspect it could be the same if the US joined. :)
You're not allowed to vote for your own country. SLAP! Sweden won the contest he was talking about, last year, and the UK came a respectable 25th out of 25. Terrible song. We've heard 20 seconds of this years and it's . . . better. Dance track, not really my thing. Fully released tomorrow, I believe. Actually, now I have the stage, I have to say that I don't like that the songs are all released ahead of time. Some are huge hits before we ever get to the contest. I think the first time we hear them should be on the night. But that's why I'm not the head of a major music company, I guess. Anyway, the best bit is as it always was, the voting. "Here are the results of the Finnish jury . . . "
The basis of the Eurovision Song Contest is the European Broadcast Union which is an alliance of public broadcasters in the European Broadcasting Area (which includes non-European areas - like those bordering on the Mediterranean and as far east as Azerbaijan. One of the jobs of the EBU is to provide television feed between countries so for many many years there was a satellite dish on the West Bank which fed Israel and Jordan with television signals even though they were at war the cables were not cut! Eurovision is a style of its own so saying that's very Eurovision puts it in a niche but it has been going for 78 years! It is worth having a look at the compilations of the winners over the years (and the second placed too) They tell you a great deal about a slice of European culture.

Johnny won it three times - 1980, 1987 and 1992.
@@gavindoyle692 exactly
@@gavindoyle692No, he won the first two times and wrote the song on the third one. Only him singing counts.
Of course the USA would do the American Song Contest just having people from the USA. Do one for the Americas involving Canada, USA, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, etc etc...
Most, if not all, the countries you mention COULD take part in Eurovision proper as they are all Associate Members of the European Broadcasting Union and so qualify.
@@angharaddenby3389Just look at Australia 🦘!
No because then it's not all about America.... They always copy other formats and call the orginals the other country's version of the American show. Like they invented it. It's always about America. So they will never do that.
Their competition was between the different US states.
@@Merecir but what is the point? it's the same country, culture, same people... it totally misses the point of the Eurovision song contest format concept
Olivia Newton-John was born and lived her very early life in Cambridge, UK.
Wasn't her grandad Max Born, or something like that?
th-cam.com/video/OpVs2eMwCZA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0u3hqh0J4pkQr6HJ
But that has nothing to do with her being chosen by the BBC to represent them, does it?
"Hard Rock Hallelujah" was and is the best ever winning Eurovision song in my opinion. Such epic winners 🤘🤘🤘
They were great
You definitely don't need the slaps and graphics
Olivia Newton-John was born in the UK and is described as a "British and Australian singer and actress".
Countries are not allowed to vote for themselves. 😉
Please stop all the slaps.
Please stop the slaps etc.
JJ I'm BEGGING you to stop the annoying slaps.
Yes, please stop, it is not even slightly amusing
Only Davie504 can do it. It`s his trademark :D
TH-cam has an official Eurovision Song Contest channel with official music videos of the entries.
No more Slap.
What does that mean sorry?
One thing you need to know, Germany almost always is in the last place. Doesn’t matter what group/singer/ song gets send there.
Greetings from Germany 😂😂😂
Sorry about that but we don’t want to interrupt you all from making the best kitchen appliances.
You 've won at least twice from what I can remember.
Well, tbf, we in the UK take our fair share of last place, and nil points.
It’s a badge of honour 😁
They do badly because they send bad songs
We share it with the UK, okay?😅
Last year it was was filmed right outside my house so it was impossible to watch it live on tv because the seven second delay made me feel dizzy hearing it come through the window then on the telly 😆
Love you, hate the slaps etc, it's like having too many adverts during your tv programmes over there.
Well JJ, I have enjoyed your reactions for a while. But the slaps, reverse slaps, prizes, voice effects and silly spelling has lost me. Let me know if you revert to just reacting and I'll watch again. Thanks for the fun along the way
Why have you started with all theses ‘Slaps’ ?
Yes, I agree. When it started it was silly, but now it's becoming effing annoying. Time to unsubscribe, I think!
It is just for Europe. The few non-European countries in there are exceptions due to specific circumstances.
What is most remarkable is that the Eurovision Song Contest was created just 11 years after the end of World War II.
❤
Old Info - Sweden won 2023, so now there is a tie between Ireland and Sweden, both co untries have seven wins, of which two of the winning songs sung by the same artist (Ireland: Johnny Logan) (Sweden: Loreen)
Olivia Newton-John was born in England, her parents emigrated to Australia when she was five.

I'd like to apologise on behalf of my fellow ESC fans. We/they can be rather sensitive. I don't see anything wrong with your reaction. People are taking you too seriously.
I think that it goes without saying - You cannot vote for your own country - However! It was well known back in the day that voters would rush over the border in Northern Ireland and find the nearest phone box and vote for their own country i.e. Irish residents would cross over into Northern Ireland and vote for their own country and vice versa😅
I really enjoy your video reactions. Your voice is like honey to me… there I’ve said it.
However, these recent videos with the slaps and on screen pop ups, is… well… I guess rather annoying. Just honest straightforward talking is enough for me. Please stop with all these ‘tacky’ additions. Thanks 🙏
7:22 That's not how the Olympics works 😂
Haha.. glad I wasn`t the only one thinking "did he just said that out loud??".
Please just stop with the slap and other shit now!!
“Rock songs rarely make an appearance in the competition?” That’s not true!
I watched that year like i've done every year since i was 5 and now i'm 47.
The first English language winner was Sandie Shaw representing the UK won in 1967 with “Puppet On A String”.
Olivia Newton-John was was borne in Cambridge, England and grew up in Australia and so had an Australian accent and duel nationality, she was very well known in Britain before Grease.
She also beat Loretta Lynn at the CMAs before Grease.
Lol how the hell do Americans have no idea about this????
Even Australia has sent their own contestants!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Exactly. It's been on the go since 1956, but America is a very insular and xenophobic nation where too many of its populace don't even know much about their own country, let alone the rest of the world!
It's a European contest.
Why should Americans know about it.
only a couple months till the next one hosted from Sweden... cant wait :(
I can't either 😂😂 ❤

The day has passed and another one
It's like the time has stopped here
I'm going here, I'm going there
And when the sun goes down and it's all over again
[Pre-Chorus]
Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow
I promise to love you tomorrow
In the good, in the good, in the good
You'll find me in the good night

Am I still alive?
Do you still recognize me?
The sun doesn't rise
Tell me, will you stay close?
[Post-Chorus]
Wait a bit, wait a bit
One more minute, wait a bit
Wait a bit, wait a bit
One more minute, hold on

one thing I love about Eurovision is being exposed to other countries music, artists, culture and language. Where else would I as a Swedish person organically hear a song in Ukranian that is a mix of modern music and an obscure traditional instrument?
What about Dana international she's LGBT won in the 90s
The first LGBT song winner was " Nous les amoureux" in 1961. The lyrics were written in such a way that everyone thought they were about heterosexual love even though the authors later admitted that it was about two men. Of course, they had to wait for mentalities to advance because, in 1961, how can I say.....
Jean-Claude Pascal, the singer, also came out of the closet much later.😊
Twin Twin was brilliant, i love the Moustache song. Verka Serduchka is my fave 😀
Should check out the 1994 Dublin Eurovision Song Contest interval show called Riverdance. Is very good.
And the episode of Father Ted called "A Song for Europe".
BTW...you can't vote for your own country in Eurovision.
However, if your had a televised show to select the song that represents the your country, then you probably already did.
You should do a follow up this week watching some of the 2024 entries!
for every video from now on with get a thumps down from me that has slaps or reveres slaps untill it stops
On BBC iplayer, they have subtitles for songs not in English and they're hysterical

Olivia Newton-John was born in England and her family emigrated to Australia when she was a child.
The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual song contest organized by the European Broadcasting Union EBU. In which all EBU members can participate. The Israeli public broadcasting company is a full member of the EBU, which gives it the right to participate in the competition. Associate members of the EBU are e.g. Australia, China, India, USA and Canada. I don't know why out of the associate members only Australia participates in the competitions.
It's such a fun event. Hope you get to react to the actual event. Most of us in the UK have get-togethers and mock everything we see (Including our own acts most of the time). It can be a really funny and chaotic viewing.
USA! USA! USA! SSLAP! ...I get it, gimmicks to stand you out. But honestly...stop it! I'm not anti USA...IRELAND! IRELAND! IRELAND! ...is equally as annoying.
I really like your reactions and you come across very well and intelligently, but gimmicks eegh🥴. I don't mean to be mean so sorry but I just had to say it....SSLAP! 🤦🏻♂️
Such an American thing to do. Watch the video explaining what something is instead of watching the actual thing.
And then making "usa" references whenever possible.
And of course... making reference to America needing to make a version without realising they already have.
And as with everything else they copy, they sucked the life out of it and made it bad.
Anakin Skywalker reacting to Eurovision was not on my bingo card, but alas the surprise is a welcome one. Cheers from Croatia!
Americans are surprised by everything...
You cannot vote for your own country! 😆
We always have a party on eurovision night :)
Stop the sllapp or else i slap the subscribed (to unsubscribe)

The reason you have the intro videos is because all of the acts are performing on the same stage so they need a few minutes to clear out the previous act and set up for the next act, I think you would love Eurovision if you watched it live, it's crazy
I don't get the 'awards' and 'slaps'. Your channel used to be good.
Olivia Newton John born 26 September 1948, Cambridge, England
Johnny Logan was born in Australia though
I'm seventy five years old, and this has been going on for most of my life - and I still don't believe it's real!

Dont talk about the American Song Contest again 😳😳😳😳
Some countries write songs specifically for the Eurovision Song Contest, but most artists simply do their stuff, participate in national festivals, and end up going to Eurovision or not. Festivals are a way for artists to promote their art, regardless of the results
Eurovision actually gives out a best hair award.
12:05 the songs are released as music videos way ahead of the competition, and are generally performed live at national nominating competitions.
I remember seeing Lordi a couple of years ago in Brighton and they are absolutely hilarious live
Finally, what took you so long. This is what you want to see
I get the not wanting arts to be "competitive" but keeping the origins of the Eurovision Song Contest in mind, I think it's a good tradition to have a friendly rivalry about writing and performing songs to remind ourselves what the alternative would be (A Europe at war).
For an American Song Contest, maybe make it so that each STATE competes?
I understand that the name Eurovision is the name of the Swiss broadcaster that televised the first event.
A Transgender woman,Dana International,for Israel with “Diva” in 1998.
Sorry. It was 1999.
I can't get over the fact that you thought a competition that's been going on for the past 70 years wasn't real and was just a joke.... 😂😂 That's hilarious! 🤣
Down voted for the annoying 'funny' comments throughout. Although it's my own fault for watching, I guess.
Will Ferrell has a Swedish wife, that's how he was introduced to the phenomenon and made the movie
This bloke should watch Riverdance. He might like it!
"Here are the results of the Finnish jury . . . "
This guy looks like the perfect combination of Hayden Christensen and Sebastian Stan.
The basis of the Eurovision Song Contest is
the European Broadcast Union
which is an alliance of public broadcasters in
the European Broadcasting Area
(which includes non-European areas - like
those bordering on the Mediterranean and
as far east as Azerbaijan.
One of the jobs of the EBU is to provide
television feed between countries
so for many many years
there was a satellite dish on the West Bank
which fed Israel and Jordan with television signals
even though they were at war the cables were not cut!
Eurovision is a style of its own
so saying that's very Eurovision puts it in a niche
but it has been going for 78 years!
It is worth having a look at the compilations of
the winners over the years
(and the second placed too)
They tell you a great deal about a slice of European culture.
